					<l>United States Senate</l>
					<l>WASHINGTON, D. C.</l>
					<l>July 9, 1940</l>
					<l>Dear Mother:</l>
<l>I missed writing my letter yesterday.</l>
<l>There is great pressure in the direction of</l>
<l>National Defense and the political campaign.</l>
<l>The Senate did not get to a vote on the</l>
<l>Stimson and Knox nominations yesterday, and</l>
<l>may not do so today. Much time was wasted in</l>
					<l>irrelevant speech-making.</l>
<l>The Military Affairs Committee is working on</l>
<l>the selective service bill, and I fear its</l>
<l>studies will extend beyond the Democratic Con¬</l>
<l>vention, and perhaps not be concluded until</l>
					<l>August.</l>
					<l>The Willkie-McNary meeting last night was at-</l>
					<l>tended by about 300 Congressmen and Senators</l>
<l>who were enthusiastic, and who will probably</l>
					<l>make a vigorous campaign. The prospects seem</l>
					<l>good.</l>
					<l>Your devoted son,</l>
					<l>Warren</l>
					<l>Mrs. C.G.Austin,</l>
					<l>St. Albans,</l>
					<l>Vermont.</l>
					<l>
 Best love</l>
