United States Senate WASHINGTON, D. C. July 9, 1940 Dear Mother: I missed writing my letter yesterday. There is great pressure in the direction of National Defense and the political campaign. The Senate did not get to a vote on the Stimson and Knox nominations yesterday, and may not do so today. Much time was wasted in irrelevant speech-making. The Military Affairs Committee is working on the selective service bill, and I fear its studies will extend beyond the Democratic Con¬ vention, and perhaps not be concluded until August. The Willkie-McNary meeting last night was at- tended by about 300 Congressmen and Senators who were enthusiastic, and who will probably make a vigorous campaign. The prospects seem good. Your devoted son, Warren Mrs. C.G.Austin, St. Albans, Vermont. Best love
