My Dear Mother:
We are debating the appropriation
for military preparedness on
the basis of a full peace time
army- There is no intention presently
to call out Reserves or the National
Guard. What we are doing is
trying to equip ourselves with
factories to produce the new
types of munitions required
for defense against modern
warfare- so different than
any practiced before-
The Germans are now at
the Channel Ports- Our exposure
therefore is increased- We must
face the danger calmly and
get ready to repet invaders
from without and within.
I hope we can avoid war
frenzy. We can do a more
constructive service if we
keep our heads and proceed
wisely-
I will broadcast over
the Washington Star [ ]
N.B.C. next Monday night
at 10.30 standard time i.e.
11.30 P.M. your time.
