My Dear Mother:
These are strenuous hours
and minutes. We are putting
through very important bills
in such haste that the
danger to our country is evident.
You will observe from
the Record of today that I
accomplished substantial
protection of the peoples
purse by offering an
amendment and exciting
Democrats to take the same
view I held, and themselves
make amendments which satisfied
me and caused me to withdraw
my amendment. This was
all on the Housing Bill which
has a noble objective but
was being made the vehicle
for reorganization of the Gov't
