My Dear Mother:
It is a shame to make you
read my writing, but I am in the Senate
now and must do my own writing.
Mildred and I [ ] your letter
of two days ago. We were on the Potomac
at the same time as the President in the
Sequoia. It seemed interesting to be
on the outside looking at the Sequoia.
In memory the inside of the Sequoia
came back to us with ten days
of pleasant association with
President and Mrs. Hoover.
The "Felicia" senator Metcalfs'
yacht is much larger and more
substantial and elegant than the Sequoia-
We sailed slowly down the Potomac
and anchored near its outlet into
the Bay. Sunday we sailed back to Mount
Vernon where we anchored for that night.
Monday returned to Washington.

It was just a [ ] rest. And we
needed it-
We [ ] at Fort Washington
designed by L'Enfant who made
the plans for Washington. The
old walls covered with ivy,
and the embankments have grown
up to large trees; sufficient
exposure of masonry is left to
show beauty and strength of the
old fortress-
We are now engaged in the
impeachment trial of Judge Lauderbach.
It so far seems like a political
squabble between lawyers- But I
keep my mind open for further
evidence-
I shall be in Montpelier for an
[argument] May 24 but will return
the same night. I hope to talk with
you on phone about supper time.
