<l>United States Senate</l>
<l>Washington, D.C></l>
<l>May 19, 1933</l>
<l>My Dear Mother:</l>
<l>It is a shame to make you</l>
<l>read my writing, but I am in the Senate</l>
<l>now and must do my own writing.</l>
<l>Mildred and I [ ] your letter</l>
<l>of two days ago. We were on the Potomac</l>
<l>at the same time as the President in the</l>
<l>Sequoia. It seemed interesting to be</l>
<l>on the outside looking at the Sequoia.</l>
<l>In memory the inside of the Sequoia</l>
<l>came back to us with ten days</l>
<l>of pleasant association with</l>
<l>President and Mrs. Hoover.</l>
<l>The "Felicia" senator Metcalfs'</l>
<l>yacht is much larger and more</l>
<l>substantial and elegant than the Sequoia-</l>
<l>We sailed slowly down the Potomac</l>
<l>and anchored near its outlet into</l>
<l>the Bay. Sunday we sailed back to Mount</l>
<l>Vernon where we anchored for that night.</l>
<l>Monday returned to Washington.</l>

<l>United States Senate</l>
<l>Washington, D.C.</l>
<l>It was just a [ ] rest. And we</l>
<l>needed it-</l>
<l>We [ ] at Fort Washington</l>
<l>designed by L'Enfant who made</l>
<l>the plans for Washington. The</l>
<l>old walls covered with ivy,</l>
<l>and the embankments have grown</l>
<l>up to large trees; sufficient</l>
<l>exposure of masonry is left to </l>
<l>show beauty and strength of the</l>
<l>old fortress-</l>
<l>We are now engaged in the</l>
<l>impeachment trial of Judge Lauderbach.</l>
<l>It so far seems like a political</l>
<l>squabble between lawyers- But I</l>
<l>keep my mind open for further</l>
<l>evidence-</l>
<l>I shall be in Montpelier for an</l>
<l>[argument] May 24 but will return</l>
<l>the same night. I hope to talk with</l>
<l>you on phone about supper time.</l>
<l>But love from Mildred and me.</l>
