My Dear Mother:
I was glad to get your
fine letter.
We are in the closing days
of a tough session, and
this instant the Senate is
being held up by a
filibuster by Sen. Blaine
who seems to be making
a speech for the benefit
of himself among his
farmer voters.
The air is [ ] by reports
that banks are closing
in Pennsylvania and that
even the banks of the
District of Columbia are
refusing to cash checks
or let go more than 5 %
of any deposits. This
is distressing.
The inauguration will
bring considerable money
here and put it in
circulation, which ought to
help.
The matter about which
I wrote you- the appropriation
for Colleges instructing in
Agriculture and then [ ]
Arts, Agricultural Extension
Work, and Vocational
Education has continued
to be in controversy since
I wrote you. Today I have
assurances that encourage
the belief that the matter
will be satisfactorily
ended at this session and
these necessary appropriations
saved. It has been a
hard fight.
There is no certainty
about the time when the
Senate will adjourn
or when it will resume
in special session. The
latest information is,
that the special session
will be called for March
13. If it should be,
there is little hope of
our getting leave now.
However, I believe that
we will finally adjourn
earlier in the Summer if
we continue right through
into the special session.

in from the House agreeing
to the Senate amendment
which saves the educational
interests I have been working
