<l>Washington City</l>
<l> Dec 12. 1858</l>
<l>Mary,</l>
<l>I recd. your note of the 8th inst.</l>
<l> last evening & was pleased to hear you </l>
<l>were all well. I desire to hear from home </l>
<l>at least once each week, even if you </l>
<l>have no news to write me. I however do</l>
<l> not insist you shall perform this every</l>
<l> time yourself. Mary & William can</l>
<l> write. Tell Lizzie to try her hand in a </l>
<l>letter to me. </l>
<l>My pen is probably little better than </l>
<l>yours & I wish Mary to take from a box </l>
<l>of bright pens on my table, in my room,</l>
<l> three or four pens & inclose them in next </l>
<l> letter to me, that I may see whether I </l>
<l>can procure any <hi rend='underlined:true;'>such</hi> here. </l>
<l>I have had little to do but it has</l>

<l>rained most of the time since I came </l>
<l>& I have therefore not been out much.</l>
<l>I have been to the Pension Office & called </l>
<l>on the President & have received his </l>
<l>card of invitation to dinner next Tuesday.</l>
<l> I will write you about it when it</l>
<l> comes off. </l>
<l>I have not been to Willards but </l>
<l>intend going soon. Mrs Foster & Mrs </l>
<l>Wood are at present the only ladies I </l>
<l>know there. Mrs Hatch does not come</l>
<l> this winter & he says their child is no </l>
<l>better. Mrs. Spinner is at Willards.</l>
<l>The Capitol presents the same ap-</l>
<l>pearance as when you was here. No more </l>
<l>seems to be done externally & the same </l>
<l>amount of rubbish, stone & litter around </l>
<l>it. Internally more is done & it looks as </l>
<l>if the new Senate Room might be</l>
<l> ready to receive us in the course of the </l>
<l>winter. You know however that I regard </l>
<l>our present room as the best. </l>

<l>is not only well & growing but is </l>
<l>really interested in his school & improves in</l>
<l> his reading. </l>
