<l>Washington City </l>
<l>Dec 26. 1858</l>
<l>Mary,</l>
<l>It is 10 clock Sunday evening</l>
<l>& the rain is beating against my </l>
<l>window in dark lonesome cadence </l>
<l>I have recd. no line from home the </l>
<l>past week. Congress has adjourned </l>
<l>until the 4th of Jan. & a large part of </l>
<l>the members have gone home. It will </l>
<l>cost too much of labor & expense for </l>
<l>me to go home for so short a visit and</l>
<l> especially at this time when our </l>
<l>Session is to close so soon. </l>
<l>Yesterday I went with Mr. Foot, by</l>
<l>special invitation, to take a Christmas </l>
<l>dinner with Col. Roberts at Georgetown.</l>
<l>The Col. besides his family had some </l>
<l>few personal friends. Mr. Scott, a Repre-</l>

<l>sentative from California, Mr </l>
<l>Otero, the Delegate from New Mexico </l>
<l>& his lady. Col. Roberts & his wife </l>
<l>were for some time in New Mexico </l>
<l>with army & there knew these people.</l>
<l> It was quite a pleasant little party</l>
<l> & an excellent dinner. </l>
<l>It is ordered that the Senate, on </l>
<l>its assembling, shall go into the new </l>
<l>Senate Chamber. It is ordered by the</l>
<l>Committee, of which I am on, that </l>
<l>there be an address by our Presiding </l>
<l>Officer (Breckenridge) on the occasion. </l>
<l>I know little of what is going on </l>
<l>at the other end of the city but I </l>
<l>think it very quiet. Mr Cass had</l>
<l>dinner on Friday of the Foreign </l>
<l>Ministers & Committees of the House & </l>
<l>Senate on Foreign Relations. At</l>
<l> the Presidents dinner of Friday some </l>
<l>of our mess Mr & Mrs Wade, were </l>

<lg>
<l>invited but declined to go.</l>
<l> I shall take this week to </l>
<l>send off the five or six hundred</l>
<l>volumes of documents I have now </l>
<l>on hand & shall have another </l>
<l>like job, late in the session. It is </l>
<l>much more work to direct & handle </l>
<l>these volumes than to frank speeches.</l>
<l>I find the new correspondence list</l>
<l>I prepared at home, quite a</l>
<l>relief to me. </l>
<l>I have attended meeting </l>
<l>the two last Sundays at the Capitol </l>
<l>& on both occasions have heard </l>
<l>excellent discourses. </l>
<l>I thought of you often on </l>
<l>Thursday last as having The Society </l>
<l>with you & hoped you were well &</l>
<l>enjoyed their company. </l>
<l>Love to you all - </l>
<l>Affectionately</l>
<l> Your Husband</l>

<l>P.S. Monday Morning Dec. 27 </l>
<l>Recd. with pleasure yours of </l>
