<l>Washington City</l>
<l>June 26. 1856</l>
<l>Mary,</l>
<l>It turned out to be a hot day before </l>
<l>I reached New York, but the next day (Saturday)</l>
<l>was exceedingly oppressive in the cars, as windows</l>
<l>had to be kept closed to exclude the smoke, dust </l>
<l>& cinders. I reached here Saturday before sunset </l>
<l>but was very hot & uncomfortable. I took off all</l>
<l>flannel & bathed but slept little. Sunday I</l>
<l>found one of the hottest days I ever experienced in</l>
<l>Washington but I attended meeting. Monday</l>
<l>was less intemperate & since then it has been</l>
<l>quite moderate. I now feel as well as usual.</l>
<l>I do not find that any better state of temper</l>
<l>prevails here than when I left. Indeed it seems to</l>
<l>me there is a worse public arousal of approbation</l>
<l>of violence on the part of Southern men now </l>
<l>prevailing than when I left.</l>

<l>I find much work before me. I found a</l>
<l>large number of letters recd. in my absence which</l>
<l>I have not yet had time to answer. Yesterday</l>
<l>the Kansas business was again sent to our</l>
<l>Committee by the Senate & if will require</l>
<l>renewed attention, difficult to give it in</l>
<l>[<unclear>Expries</unclear>] [<unclear>Pol</unclear>] matters. I shall not feel it my </l>
<l>duty to disregard my own health however but</l>
<l>shall do the best for that I can.</l>
<l>I found on my arrival a letter from Edward</l>
<l>written in good spirits. He says that Henry</l>
<l>& Charles Moore are well but live in a distant</l>
<l>part of the city from him & he does not see them</l>
<l>often. He regards them as very likely young men</l>
<l>but of little efficiency. </l>
<l>I had a letter from Mr. G. Henry requesting</l>
<l>me to subscribe $200 in stock with other people</l>
<l>of Woodstock to introduce Gas light, into the</l>
<l>village. I referred the matter to William & Mr</l>
<l>Johnson to do for me what they think best.</l>
<l>I remain Your Affectionate</l>
<l>Husband</l>
