<l>Washington City</l>
<l>Dec. 20. 1857</l>
<l>Mary,</l>
<l>I have recd. no letter from</l>
<l>home the past week but presume I</l>
<l>shall have one in a day or two, & in</l>
<l>the mean time I shall presume all</l>
<l>well.</l>
<l>It has been a very busy week with</l>
<l>us especially for so early a stage of the</l>
<l>Session & before the holidays.</l>
<l>Mr & Mrs Douglas & occupying much </l>
<l>public attention & remark. His opposition</l>
<l>to the course of the President as to Kansas</l>
<l>is quite a topic of political circles. He</l>
<l>has built a new house here, which is said</l>
<l>to be a very nice one & [<unclear>the soom is now</unclear>]</l>
<l><unclear>[ofered for courtasy</unclear>] & all were invited</l>
<l>to attend Mrs. D's first reception at</l>
<l>any time from 11 A.M. to 4 P. M. The</l>

<l>Senate</l>
<l>was in Session all day, although it</l>
<l>was Saturday, So I did not go & cannot</l>
<l>tell you anything on the matter but I am</l>
<l>told that few but republicans, that is</l>
<l>that few democrats, called.</l>
<l>The House of Representatives have gone into</l>
<l>their new hall, a gorgeous affair, but in</l>
<l>my opinion, inferior to the old hall in</l>
<l>architectural character & grandeur.</l>
<l>I have been this day to hear Dr. Smith</l>
<l>in 9th street. He seems exactly the same</l>
<l>as when I first heard him & the house &</l>
<l>congregation appear unchanged.</l>
<l>It is proposed to adjourn next Thursday</l>
<l>for about a week & no doubt it may as</l>
<l>well be done for no business is in face</l>
<l>done from Christmas until after new</l>
<l>year & the members from Maryland, Virgin</l>
<l>ia, & even some farther, go home. M who</l>
<l>are from a distance must remain & this</l>
<l>lengthens out the Session in the Summer. I do</l>
<l>not like it.</l>

<lg>
<l>I shall be at leisure next week and</l>
<l>be lonesome. I wish you were here for the</l>
<l>weather is mild & pleasant & I think you</l>
<l>would enjoy it. It is the condition of</l>
<l>this house that each family occupies its </l>
<l>own rooms almost exclusively & goes & comes</l>
<l>in its own way. I called on Judge</l>
<l>McLain & lady & they together returned</l>
<l>the call the other evening. I hardly</l>
<l>expected that.</l>
<l>I have no other matter of news</l>
<l>to write you. I am as well as usual.</l>
<l>Affectionately</l>
<l>Your Husband</l>
