<l>Washington April 9th 1820</l>
<l>Dear Sir,</l>
<l>I wrote you a week or two since that </l>
<l>Mr Riley proposed to pay me his tax on Kelleyvale </l>
<l>which we bidd [bid] off last April - which will save him a jour-</l>
<l>ney to Vermont - I have agreed to take the money and have </l>
<l>it redeemed - he has sent me fifty dollars & wrote me he will </l>
<l>send me the ballance [balance] in a few days - I shall be at home</l>
<l>early in May but the time of redemption will be out before </l>
<l>I get home - fearing my other letter might miscarry I write </l>
<l>again - There will be no occasion to enter it redeemed until</l>
<l>I come home - nor to take out deeds before that time if he </l>
<l>fails to pay the remainder -</l>
<l>I have no particular news - you have probably heard </l>
<l>that <hi rend='underlined:true;'>our Spanish war</hi> is come to an end - The Southern States </l>
<l>want Florida, to make another <hi rend='underlined:true;'>negro State</hi> - but there was</l>
<l>like to be so much opposition to the project of taking Florida</l>
<l>that the administration was glad to <hi rend='underlined:true;'>back out</hi>. All is in-</l>
<l>trigue here - Mr Clay has an eye upon the office of President </l>
<l>and wishes to succeed Mr Monroe after 4 years, and to pave the </l>
<l>way wishes to be Vice president <hi rend='underlined:true;'>vice</hi> [ ] - They got up a </l>
<l>caucus for the purpose but there was so much opposition that</l>
<l>it <hi rend='underlined:true;'>flushed in the pan</hi> - I see plainly that Adams will never</l>
<l>get it - It will be Clay or Crawford - The Southern States would </l>
<l>divide the union before they would submit to a Northern President.</l>
<l>Col. J Scott</l>
<l>Yours in haste</l>
