The wind has died away come this evening and the sun set nice and clear Thursday July 1, 1897 This is the finest day we have had since we left New York, nice and cool and the ship steady and making good time. Sighted two sailing ships and one steamer to-day Friday July 2 Fine weather and calm sea evry thing all right. Sighted a high mountain peak on the coast of Brazil just at sunset to night 69 1897 Saturday July 3 Fine and clear and just cool enough to be comfortable. Sighted some more high land on the Brazil coast this A.M. Passed Cape Freo this P.M. and had quite a good sight of it Saw quite a number of Ships to day Steamers and Sailing bothe Sunday July 4 This has been the dullest 4th that I have ever passed I think evry thing is as quiet as the grave and the sea is calm and the weather fair and the ship is making extra good time 247 miles to-day which beats the reckord so far on this trip Monday July 5 Heavy thunder and lightening last night and lots of rain and fog. the fog horn sounded 70 nearly all night and the weather is cloudy and dark this morning and a slow drizzling rain is falling but the sea is smooth and the ship is making good time Rain all day and the wind beginning to blow harder twords night and the sea is getting quite rough Tuesday July 6 Heavy sea on last night all night with the wind straight ahead and the ship pitched and tumbled about terribly and the water came on in tons on the fore end of the ship and broke up the cattle pens in bad shape but the cattle are all right only from getting an awful soaking and knocking about. The sky 71 has cleared up this morning and the sun shines nicely but there is quite a heavy sea on and a strong breeze. Last night the sea was so heavy that they had to slow the ship down to haulf speed from 9 o'clock until about two this morning A heavy sea continues to run all day and the wind is getting stronger twords sun set Wednesday July 7 Heavy sea and very strong wind and some rain and hail all night and the ship run on haulf speed nearly all night and shipped any amount of water and smashed the ends of my sheep pens in and the sheep are sopping wet again and in bad shape again as the weather is getting pretty cold. 72 The captain stopped the ship to-day noon so I could get up some feed for the sheep and I gave them a good feed as possible under the circumstances and then we went on our course again and the ship is pitching and diving about and taking on water at a great rate and there is still no indication of the weather getting any better yet. The cattle pens on the fore of the ship were all smashed to peices again last night. It is cold enough so we have had a fire in the saloon all day and things look pretty blue in the live stock line just now but they are all alive so far. The wind is dying away twords night and the sea is going down some 73 Thursday July 8 Quite a pleasant morning and the ship is making good time. Weather quite cool and water decently smooth. Expect to get in to Montevideo to-morrow morning early if we have good luck. I have been packing up and getting ready for shore time fore-noon Friday July 9 Arrived at Montevideo this Morning at day light and went ashore and saw the American Consul and Auctioneers and several men in regard to the sheep business and had very strong advice from each of them not to land my sheep there but to go on to Buenos Aeyres and so I decided to go and went back aboard the Ship at 5 P.M. after making arrangements for taking the sheep up to B.A. 74 Saturday July 10 Left Montevideo last night at 11 o'clock and are now in the River Rio De La Plata on our way Buenos A. Went up and called on Mr Eells this evening 79 Thursday July 29 I went this morning and saw one of the most curious sights of the kind that I have ever seen before, which was a Cemetary here in Buenos Ayres which is really a City in itself as the graves are set over by a proper little house with glass doors in them and the Caskits can be seen upon shelves within as there are several bodies buried in a good many of them, and some of the interments are not in the ground at all but are built of marble in spaces one above the other, large enough only to admit one caskit in each compartment and are closed at the enterance by a block or slab of marble 80 Friday July 30 Beautiful day and evry thing all sareene [serene] and the Buck trade is more than dull Saturday July 31 Sunday July August 1 Monday August 2 Tuesday August 3 Wednesday August 4 Thursday August 5 Friday August 6 Saturday August 7 I have neglected to keep any reckord of the past few days 81 for the reason that there has not been any thing out of the general run of every day life in the city to write up to date.
