<lb facs='#facs_5_r1l8' n='N007'/>I left Charleson Mass. one week ago last Thursday at

<lb facs='#facs_5_r1l12' n='N011'/>made the acquaintance of an old Gentleman & Lady who
<lb facs='#facs_5_r1l13' n='N012'/>were going to New York. I was to meet Mrs. Ormsby at Springfield
<lb facs='#facs_5_r1l14' n='N013'/>as we were going together - It was 12 o'clock when we reached Springfield
<lb facs='#facs_5_r1l15' n='N014'/>so I had plenty of company - We reached New York at 5 o'clock
<lb facs='#facs_5_r1l16' n='N015'/>in the morning went im mediately to the Wharf where
<lb facs='#facs_5_line_1596588128715_109' n='N016'/>we looked about for our checks. We obtained

<lb facs='#facs_5_r1l26' n='N027'/>from the <hi rend='underlined:true;'>cars.</hi> Trenton I have quite a favorable opinion of as any
<lb facs='#facs_5_r1l27' n='N028'/>city I passed through. Philadelphia we rode through in

<lb facs='#facs_6_r1l4' n='N004'/>The buildings are large square houses built of brick, no taste

<lb facs='#facs_6_r1l8' n='N008'/>again through Baltimore. Oh you never saw such a dirty
<lb facs='#facs_6_r1l9' n='N009'/>city. There you see there is nothing going on - all
<lb facs='#facs_6_line_1596589822156_155' n='N010'/>mud and dirt and

<lb facs='#facs_6_r1l16' n='N017'/>were not obliged to leave the cars. I do not enjoy
<lb facs='#facs_6_r1l17' n='N018'/>such places, I assure you - for a short time before I
<lb facs='#facs_6_r1l18' n='N019'/>came down, the cars run off the boat into the
<lb facs='#facs_6_r1l19' n='N020'/>water, but fortunately the second car caught and
<lb facs='#facs_6_r1l20' n='N021'/>no one was drowned. We arrived at Washington
<lb facs='#facs_6_r1l21' n='N022'/>at six o'clock in the evening and found Col.

<lb facs='#facs_6_r1l23' n='N024'/>was glad to see him. But his Regt. had moved

<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l2' n='N002'/>a Hotel where we found Mrs. Col Blunt who left
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l3' n='N003'/>her husband that day to remain in Washington till
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l4' n='N004'/>she could be provided for near the Brigade. Mrs
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l5' n='N005'/>Blunt and I heard Dr. Sunderland preach Sunday -
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l6' n='N006'/>- but we did not go out much - I thought I had
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l7' n='N007'/>rather go round with Col. Farnham sometime. One
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l8' n='N008'/>can not get lost in Washington more than in Buffalo.
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l9' n='N009'/>The streets are so broad and straight. It is a very
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l10' n='N010'/>pleasant city. We saw Mrs. Lewis and her friends. I like
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l11' n='N011'/>her much. and I think she is enjoying herself - It was <hi rend='underlined:true;'>during</hi>
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l12' n='N012'/>the Battle of Fredricksburg that I <hi rend='underlined:true;'>saw</hi> her, and her husband
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l13' n='N013'/>was engaged in that <hi rend='underlined:true;'>battle</hi>, Most of the wounded were brought
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l14' n='N014'/>to Washington in the <hi rend='underlined:true;'>night</hi>, We could hear the ambulances
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l15' n='N015'/>bringing in the wounded. I did not visit any hospitals,
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l16' n='N016'/>but shall before I go home. Col. Farnham left saturday morning
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l17' n='N017'/>but returned Monday to say that Mrs. Blunt and I could
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l18' n='N018'/>be boarded near the Regt. I was glad for I was near being
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l19' n='N019'/>homesick. We Mrs. Blunt and I left Washington Wednesday
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l20' n='N020'/>morning intending to go down and take the ten o'clock

<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l22' n='N022'/>so we reached the depot in season to see the last Horse-
<lb facs='#facs_7_r1l23' n='N023'/>car going to the Wharf for the time. But soon we found

<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l2' n='N002'/>ten minutes too late. - so I walked along to see to my
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l3' n='N003'/>baggage and found a man nailing up a Box I
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l4' n='N004'/>had brought with me, with some fixings for Col. F.
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l5' n='N005'/>I asked him how it came open. The Porter steped up
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l6' n='N006'/>and said. the <hi rend='underlined:true;'>man</hi> thought he could <hi rend='underlined:true;'>smell something</hi>
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l7' n='N007'/>He wanted some <hi rend='underlined:true;'>drink</hi>! The Porter told him, he had better
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l8' n='N008'/>look out - for there were only a few things for the Col. He
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l9' n='N009'/>nailed up the box in a hurry - I had some Brandy &
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l10' n='N010'/>Cherry Rum for <hi rend='underlined:true;'>Ros</hi>. But the fellow did not find
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l11' n='N011'/>it, so we crossed the Potomac, at last and found
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l12' n='N012'/>a man waiting almost out of patience for us. He was the
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l13' n='N013'/>Sattler [Saddler] of the 12<hi rend='superscript:true;'>th</hi>. Regt. who had come in for things for the Regt.
<lb facs='#facs_8_line_1596590264236_237' n='N014'/>We
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l14' n='N015'/>had
<lb facs='#facs_8_line_1596590264236_236' n='N016'/>warmed ourselves by the time he was loaded to start.
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l16' n='N017'/>Alexandria is a Secesh town and looks as though there had
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l17' n='N018'/>been a fire, and all the houses had suffered from it. Dirty
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l19' n='N019'/>and cold. I did not see hardly a deacent dressed lady while
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l20' n='N020'/>passing through. More negroes still and scolding whites. I should
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l21' n='N021'/>be afraid to stop there. The streets are paved with stones of all
<lb facs='#facs_8_r1l22' n='N022'/>sizes, so a worse road you never saw. The Sattler had a

<lb facs='#facs_75_r1l11' n='N011'/>and sounded differenty from <hi rend='underlined:true;'>practice</hi>. So we
<lb facs='#facs_75_r1l12' n='N012'/>think most of our Rebel Friends are not very

<lb facs='#facs_95_r1l3' n='N003'/>or to be in rediness to March by seven o'clock Monday morng [morning]
<lb facs='#facs_95_r1l4' n='N004'/>So we ladies were obliged to come away the same afternoon
<lb facs='#facs_95_r1l5' n='N005'/>as the Ambulance could not be obtained only on

<lb facs='#facs_95_r1l17' n='N017'/>I thought it was rather worse than camp life. We did

<lb facs='#facs_95_r1l19' n='N019'/>happy to see the morning light. We were ready to
