Down below zero today about
-3 early this morning. I
was up and over at the
office to meet Winifred
Stone to go to Montpelier.
Mr. & Mrs. Williams took
us along with them. The
roads bare but very cold
wind blew all day. Found
more snow at Montpelier.
Met in new state office
Bldg. Prof. Ullman came
by plane & rode back
with us to B. to get plane
back to Boston. Mr. Holden
was in at the meeting this
afternoon and proved
very interested and helpful.
Very chilly coming home
even with extra robes and
glad not to have to go
out again tonight.

SATURDAY
Cold and raw today. I accomplished
a good deal of work this morning
at my desk, came home, did
the marketing, mended and
wrote some letters, long delayed,
and this evening Faye came
in for a game of Chinese marbles.
Took Isabel back to Robinson
and was glad to get to bed
early, at 10:30 P.M. Read
for a while in SRL and
went to sleep more quickly
than in my wont.
Snowed last night about 2 inches.

We went to church with Mr. & Mrs.
Turnbull today because the
ramp had not been cleared. Very good
sermon. Home and for once had a
quiet P.M. at home. Wrote to James,
John, Cousin Ella, Walter Simpson
& Mrs. Jennie Piper - Peotone, Ill.
Made pop corn for supper.

Busy morning: to office and
to hair dresser: then went to
YWCA to leave letters: went to
market, did errands then
back to office to work until
5:30 on Mortar Board lists.
brought them home and
worked this evening too.
It is a frightful job.

To church thro' a wet, thick snow.
had a very good sermon and the
church nearly full. Decided to have
dinner late so went to office &
did not realize that a blizzard
was going on. My brakes froze
& the car stuck in the show so
had a time getting home.

MONDAY
This is almost the first really
cold day of the year. It was
12° below zero this A.M. and I
decided not to take the car
out but to walk which I
did and was a bit chilly
in the ears when I got to Waterman
Had a very hectic day, trying to
get the M.B. letters out with
many interruptions meanwhile
should have gone back to work
tonight but instead have been
listening to Faye's new records
and to the fine Mon. eve music
on the radio. Shall go to bed
early and try to get up in time
to get to the office before the rush.

WEDNESDAY
Cold still but cloudy and some
snow flurries.
Spent morning on Mortar Board
card file verifying addresses
of '30 - '40 classes. Miss Everett
worked all day on letters to
chaperones for Kake Walk affairs.
We finished stamping the
envelopes at 6:15 and then
had to take them down to the
P.O. Very slippery and had
to get out tire-tracs in order
to move from parking place.

Went down on the bus to 23rd St. &
met John at the Church of the Holy
Redeemer. Was so glad to have him go
up to Communion with me. I went
to lunch with Phoebe at Longchamps
and then to Vespers on Fifth Ave
and walked back to Woodstock Hotel

8:00 Very busy day in the office

FRIDAY
Mr. Smith came in to invite
me to go to AAUP luncheon
tomorrow when Mabel New-
comer is to speak. Muril [Muriel] Hughes
also asked me to a tea at
her house but I am already
committed to taking Mary
Greene with me to Ruth's wedding
at Woodstock tomorrow.
Went to chapel - very few there
Had conferences all day long
and worked until 6:00 getting
my desk cleaned up.
This evening Elspeth & I
went to Modern Dance Recital
at Southwick which was
very interesting - greater variety
than usual - good costumes.
I would have liked to go to the
University Club Show but felt I
must see the Modern Dance.

SATURDAY
Cold, bleak day. Left at 11:00 A.M. to
drive to Woodstock for Ruth Schoppes'
wedding. Arrived just about
1:30 but no time for lunch. The
service was at St. James Epis-
copal church a lovely place.
Ruth and Jean both looked
nice. Had reception at Woodstock
Inn. Mary Greene and I were
all the UVM's there. After the
bride & groom left we went over
to Jean's for a bit and left
about 4:00 for long drive home
where we finally arrived about
7:30 having stopped for some supper
at Rutland

APRIL
Warmer and sunny today.
Went to church & was glad to see
Rev Perkins back, also Dean Swift.
JULY

MONDAY
Was very busy all morning
at office and doing last
minute things, errands,
packing, etc. Got off for
East Hill finally about
4:00 P.M. "loaded to the
gunwhales" and in a
state of complete mental
exhaustion. Arrived
about 6:00, had supper at
Jean's and got unpacked.
The house is in a state of
complete turmoil except for
the kitchen which Jean has
cleared out somewhat. The
dining-room is full of her
furniture and so is the
garage and mother's room.
Jean wants to get unpacked and
move in as soon as may be
I am going to keep my room
and the two back bedrooms
and have the use of the
kitchen etc.

Today I started in getting my
laundry donee, my things
unpacked and a start
made on the confusion
which reigns.

Went to church. Very hot and
muggy. Dr. Park had a speechless
spell but it passed quickly and
he went on from there.

Lovely morning. Up betimes and
went to church where the sermon
was good and a better congre-
gation than usual. Down to
Eleanor's for lunch and then
took EP.U to Martha's went up to
Agnes's for the evening. Enjoyed
it but very tired.

MONDAY
Got up early and did quite
a bit before leaving for Burlington
with Bunnee as a passenger.
It got warmer as we went
and when we got to Burlington
it was very warm and humid.
I left Ouida down town and went
home to lunch with Elspeth then
on errands and to the office
after which E. Faye and I
went to the funeral at the
College St. Church. It was a
lovely sermon full of hope &
faith. Mr. Perkins planned
it all before he died and Mr.
Treat conducted it. I shall
not soon forget the beauty
and glory of it. We did more
errands mid a downpour
of rain, then left for home
about 4:15 and go[t] here
in time for supper. Very
weary but glad to be
here.

TUESDAY
This has been a very happy birthday
in spite of the fact that 1888 from
1950 leaves 62. I woke up feeling
all of my years when Elspeth called
to say that the men were here to fix
the cellar wall. There were five of
them and they have dug out a
gaping chasm underneath the
bay window in the dining
room. I was barely thro breakfast
when I heard a car drive in and
there was Jean, Carol and Mr.
Jeffers with a truck in which
was a beautiful new white stove
Jean's gift to me. It burns wood
and Pyrofax. The hot water coil is
not in yet but they have sent for it.
That is certainly a big gift
and one I shall enjoy for as
long as I live. I had cards
from my staff and Elspeth
and Isabel gave me dishes for
the apartment. Carol brot me
a case for my car containing

all sorts of little useful
gadgets.
This A.M. I washed the
clothes I had put to soak
Sun. eve. It poured at noon so
it was 3:00 P.M. before we got
the clothes out to dry. I had
just gone upstairs to clean up a
bit when Catherine Wilcox
and Ella Cowles came to
call and to invite us out
to Crystal Lake next week.
At 6:30 we went over to
Jean's and had a wonderful
dinner, roast lamb and
a beautiful birthday cake
with candles. I also had a
letter from James with a
check for $50 with which I
am going to have a new
mattress and spring for
my spool bed which James
gave me years ago on my
birthday. Best of all I

had a grand letter from
John and a nylon slip from
Betty & John, besides donuts
from Blanche, a jar of
strawberry jam from Lois
& John Gebbie, a pen from
Dorothy Stewart, a lovely
pink bed jacket from
Bunnee and a corsage
which Martha Dill made
for me.
Except for my weariness
of body and my very
sore feet, I am all OK
on this, my 62nd birthday -
and I am, O, so grateful
for all my many blessings
which far out reach my
deserts.
NOVEMBER
6
MONDAY
Beautiful morning and we
left at 8:00 A.M. for home
to vote. Mrs Johns went with
us When we got here the news
was that Harland Gage was
running against Jean and
that some of the Goodwin
and Henry Young crowd
were supporting him as the
Democratic Candidate. Jean
had not known of it until
Saturday and as this is her
first experience with any
opposition she was puzzled
and a bit upset. I voted then
came back and worked
outdoors most all day.
Burned the bonfire, raked
more leaves with Mrs John's
help, had lunch at Jean's
and dinner at the Inn with
Dorothy Stewart, Mrs. Johns
& Bunnee, then left for
Burlington: got here 9:30
NOVEMBER

FRIDAY
Very busy day at the office
and took car down to have
antifreeze put into it as
it is much colder this A.M
and I presume the Indian
summer of the past ten
days is over. Planned to
go home tonight but had
forgotten a meeting with Florence
Greene and Catherine Nulty
at 7:30 P.M anent the Legislative
Clinic for next Thursday.
James came to show off
his new Mercury car and
took us to the Park for our
dinner. There we had roast
beef, very good. He waited for
me to come home from
the meeting and left about
10:30. Miss Wing is not
feeling well this week and
is a bit touchy

SATURDAY
We got off for home at 8:20. George
Dunbar rode with us. It
snowed a bit as we rounded
the Mt. Had fine roast pork
dinner at Jean's. Then came
back here to work cleaning
up the dust which was every-
where. Also moved things out
of Mother's room so Jean can
set her things there. Richard
Grey came to help but Fred
called him off to help with
double windows so we
did not get every thing done
that I hoped. EP.U gone to Martha's
