					<l>Met in new state office</l>
					<l>Bldg. Prof. Ullman came</l>
					<l>by plane &amp; rode back</l>
					<l>with us to B. to get plane</l>
					<l>back to Boston. Mr. Holden</l>
					<l>was in at the meeting this</l>
					<l>afternoon and proved</l>
					<l>very interested and helpful.</l>
					<l>Very chilly coming home</l>
					<l>even with extra robes and</l>
					<l>glad not to have to go</l>
					<l>out again tonight.</l>

					<l>in for a game of Chinese marbles.</l>
					<l>Took Isabel back to Robinson</l>
					<l>and was glad to get to bed</l>
					<l>early, at 10:30 P.M. Read</l>

					<l>went to sleep more quickly</l>
					<l>than in my wont.</l>

					<l>John, Cousin Ella, Walter Simpson</l>

					<l>in the ears when I got to Waterman</l>
					<l>Had a very hectic day, trying to</l>

					<l>tonight but instead have been</l>
					<l>listening to Faye&apos;s new records</l>
					<l>and to the fine Mon. eve music</l>
					<l>on the radio. Shall go to bed</l>
					<l>early and try to get up in time</l>
					<l>to get to the office before the rush.</l>

					<l>went to Modern Dance Recital</l>
					<l>at Southwick which was</l>
					<l>very interesting - greater variety</l>
					<l>than usual - good costumes.</l>

					<l>University Club Show but felt I</l>
					<l>must see the Modern Dance.</l>

					<l>Cold, bleak day. Left at 11:00 A.M. to</l>
					<l>drive to Woodstock for Ruth Schoppes&apos;</l>
					<l>wedding. Arrived just about</l>
					<l>1:30 but no time for lunch. The</l>
					<l>service was at St. James Epis-</l>
					<l>copal church a lovely place.</l>
					<l>Ruth and Jean both looked</l>
					<l>nice. Had reception at Woodstock</l>
					<l>Inn. Mary Greene and I were</l>
					<l>all the UVM&apos;s there. After the</l>
					<l>bride &amp; groom left we went over</l>
					<l>to Jean&apos;s for a bit and left</l>
					<l>about 4:00 for long drive home</l>
					<l>where we finally arrived about</l>
					<l>7:30 having stopped for some supper</l>
					<l>at Rutland</l>

					<l>gunwhales&quot; and in a</l>
					<l>state of complete mental</l>
					<l>exhaustion. Arrived</l>
					<l>about 6:00, had supper at</l>
					<l>Jean&apos;s and got unpacked.</l>
					<l>The house is in a state of</l>
					<l>complete turmoil except for</l>
					<l>the kitchen which Jean has</l>
					<l>cleared out somewhat. The</l>
					<l>dining-room is full of her</l>
					<l>furniture and so is the</l>
					<l>garage and mother&apos;s room.</l>
					<l>Jean wants to get unpacked and</l>
					<l>move in as soon as may be</l>
					<l>I am going to keep my room</l>
					<l>and the two back bedrooms</l>
					<l>and have the use of the</l>
					<l>kitchen etc.</l>

					<l>Got up early and did quite</l>
					<l>a bit before leaving for Burlington</l>
					<l>with Bunnee as a passenger.</l>
					<l>It got warmer as we went</l>
					<l>and when we got to Burlington</l>
					<l>it was <hi rend='underlined:true;'>very</hi> <hi rend='underlined:true;'>warm</hi> and humid.</l>
					<l>I left Ouida down town and went</l>
					<l>home to lunch with Elspeth then</l>
					<l>on errands and to the office</l>
					<l>after which E. Faye and I</l>
					<l>went to the funeral at the</l>
					<l>College St. Church. It was a</l>
					<l>lovely sermon full of hope &amp;</l>
					<l>faith. Mr. Perkins planned</l>
					<l>it all before he died and Mr.</l>
					<l>Treat conducted it. I shall</l>
					<l>not soon forget the beauty</l>
					<l>and glory of it. We did more</l>
					<l>errands mid a downpour</l>
					<l>of rain, then left for home</l>
					<l>about 4:15 and go[t] here</l>
					<l>in time for supper. Very</l>
					<l>weary but glad to be</l>
					<l>here.</l>

					<l>TUESDAY</l>
					<l>This has been a very happy birthday</l>
					<l>in spite of the fact that 1888 from</l>
					<l>1950 leaves 62. I woke up feeling</l>
					<l>all of my years when Elspeth called</l>
					<l>to say that the men were here to fix</l>
					<l>the cellar wall. There were five of</l>
					<l>them and they have dug out a</l>
					<l>gaping chasm underneath the</l>
					<l>bay window in the dining</l>
					<l>room. I was barely thro breakfast</l>
					<l>when I heard a car drive in and</l>
					<l>there was Jean, Carol and Mr.</l>
					<l>Jeffers with a truck in which</l>
					<l>was a beautiful new white stove</l>
					<l>Jean&apos;s gift to me. It burns wood</l>
					<l>and Pyrofax. The hot water coil is</l>
					<l>not in yet but they have sent for it.</l>
					<l>That is certainly a big gift</l>
					<l>and one I shall enjoy for as</l>
					<l>long as I live. I had cards</l>
					<l>from my staff and Elspeth</l>
					<l>and Isabel gave me dishes for</l>
					<l>the apartment. Carol brot me</l>
					<l>a case for my car containing</l>
				</lg>

					<l>WEDNESDAY</l>
					<l>all sorts of little useful</l>
					<l>gadgets.</l>
					<l>This A.M. I washed the</l>
					<l>clothes I had put to soak</l>
					<l>Sun. eve. It poured at noon so</l>
					<l>it was 3:00 P.M. before we got</l>
					<l>the clothes out to dry. I had</l>
					<l>just gone upstairs to clean up a</l>
					<l>bit when Catherine Wilcox</l>
					<l>and Ella Cowles came to</l>
					<l>call and to invite us out</l>
					<l>to Crystal Lake next week.</l>
					<l>At 6:30 we went over to</l>
					<l>Jean&apos;s and had a wonderful</l>
					<l>dinner, roast lamb and</l>
					<l>a beautiful birthday cake</l>
					<l>with candles. I also had a</l>
					<l>letter from James with a</l>
					<l>check for <hi rend='superscript:true;'>$</hi>50 with which I</l>
					<l>am going to have a new</l>
					<l>mattress and spring for</l>
					<l>my spool bed which James</l>
					<l>gave me years ago on my</l>
					<l>birthday. Best of all I</l>

					<l>&amp; John Gebbie, a pen from</l>
					<l>Dorothy Stewart, a lovely</l>
					<l>pink bed jacket from</l>
					<l>Bunnee and a corsage</l>
					<l>which Martha Dill made</l>
					<l>for me.</l>
					<l>Except for my weariness</l>
					<l>of body and my very</l>
					<l>sore feet, I am all OK</l>
					<l>on this, my 62nd birthday -</l>
					<l>and I am, O, so grateful</l>
					<l>for all my many blessings</l>
					<l>which far out reach my</l>
					<l>deserts.</l>

					<l>was that Harland Gage was</l>
					<l>running against Jean and</l>
					<l>that some of the Goodwin</l>
					<l>and Henry Young crowd</l>
					<l>were supporting him as the</l>
					<l>Democratic Candidate. Jean</l>
					<l>had not known of it until</l>
					<l>Saturday and as this is her</l>
					<l>first experience with any</l>
					<l>opposition she was puzzled</l>
					<l>and a bit upset. I voted then</l>
					<l>came back and worked</l>
					<l>outdoors most all day.</l>
					<l>Burned the bonfire, raked</l>
					<l>more leaves with Mrs John&apos;s</l>
					<l>help, had lunch at Jean&apos;s</l>
					<l>and dinner at the Inn with</l>
					<l>Dorothy Stewart, Mrs. Johns</l>
					<l>&amp; Bunnee, then left for</l>
					<l>Burlington: got here 9:30</l>

					<l>go home tonight but had</l>
					<l>forgotten a meeting with Florence</l>

					<l>Clinic for next Thursday.</l>
					<l>James came to show off</l>
					<l>his new Mercury car and</l>
					<l>took us to the Park for our</l>
					<l>dinner. There we had roast</l>
					<l>beef, very good. He waited for</l>
					<l>me to come home from</l>
					<l>the meeting and left about</l>
					<l>10:30. Miss Wing is not</l>
					<l>feeling well this week and</l>
					<l>is a bit touchy</l>
