Mr. Turnbull came to take me to the hospital for the x-ray which showed a cracked bone in the ankle so a cast was indicated. Dr. Sabin put it on with a walking iron in it in the hope that I may be able to get about easier. It is frightfully heavy and I doubt if I can stand on the iron. JANUARY 10 THURSDAY Today has been a full and busy one JANUARY 11 FRIDAY Today is lovely with sun and not cold. How I hope that it will last over Sunday. I was up betimes had a good breakfast and got at my work. Helen came with the mail early so I have finished that and several students have been in. I sent Betty a birthday card and will send one of Mothers bracelets back by John for her gift. Mrs. Murray has been in while Elspeth went to market with Mrs. Nelle Tri Delt. Traveling Secretary. Sally Stebbins Adams. JANUARY 12 SATURDAY SUNDAY 13 JANUARY John cane [came] up from the hotel for breakfast and we had a cosey time over our coffee and popovers. He walked downtown about noon to get the papers and found it very cold. We had a good dinner of beefsteak & mince pie and have had several callers since. Dean Swift, Muriel Hughes, Diana Charles, Wendell Earle & Fran came here by mistake for the Mortar Board meeting. John left on the 9:50 plane and I went straight to bed. JANUARY 14 MONDAY Much colder today and altho' the sun shone early in the day it disappeared before noon and it is now snowing. It was down below zero this A.M. Elspeth cleaned up the house this morning but her head cold is no better so this P.M. I have sent her to bed with the heating pad. I got quite a lot done this forenoon in spite of several interruptions but this P.M. I have done puzzles and a letter to James which is all I feel like doing. John's visit was such a joy that my spirits have been lifted all day and I feel better than at any time since Dec. 26. FEBRUARY 2 SATURDAY SUNDAY 3 FEBRUARY James called at 9:30 P.M. He was to leave La Guardia Field at 12M. via Goose Bay Iceland, Scotland, England to Paris and from thence to Berlin. I feel very much alone with him so far away. Elspeth went to church. Nina spent three hours with me this P.M. FEBRUARY 15 FRIDAY 11:00 Vt. Church Council. MARCH 23 SATURDAY SUNDAY 24 MARCH Left on 12:35 train for Hartford, Conn. Mr. Turnbull took me to the train. Tiresome trip. Took taxi out to Thelma's and found a warm welcome from both Thelma and Clifford who is just back from the Chelsea Naval Hospital. MARCH 25 MONDAY Spent morning at home. Did the dishes for Thelma who had to go to work at 9:00. Clifford took me to the YWCA where the UCCW women were to meet for luncheon. There Miss Pardee greeted me warmly, also Miss Welcher. After luncheon went to Hartford Seminary Foundation for P.M. meetings MARCH 27 WEDNESDAY I was up at 6:45 and all ready when the breakfast bell rang MARCH 29 FRIDAY 84° in shade - too warm. MARCH 30 SATURDAY Much colder today with a north wind blowing but vastly more seasonable than yesterday This is enrollment day so Helen is over at the Gym and I had to be on duty at the office all day, except for lunch. I finished the UCCW report and caught up on the mail and wrote for a hotel reservation at Philadelphia for next Sunday and Monday. Worked until 4:15 P.M. at office and chaperoned the Razz Dazz this evening. SUNDAY 31 MARCH Beautiful day. but cold Fully intended to go to church but slept until nearly 10:30 and Elspeth was all in with a bad cold so we did not go and I feel that the day is wrong. Wrote to James and to several other people. APRIL 4 THURSDAY Up early this A.M. in order to get off for the airport at 8:30 Mr. Turnbull drove us over and we were early so we APRIL 6 SATURDAY This A.M. we met at the School of Needle Trades down on West 24th St. Very interesting panel. Sara Blanding was there and I had a nice chat with her. Back to the luncheon meeting which was addressed by Dr. Gideonse of Brooklyn College. who was good. The meal was poor - not worth $3.00. Out at 3:00 and had to rest: cold very un- comfortable. Eleanor & Nelle went up Broadway and found three single seats for "The Red Mill" which we went to this evening. Nice. SUNDAY 7 APRIL New York Up fairly early, had a doughnut and coffee then Miss J. & I went up to Riverside Church for the 11:00 service. Packed and checked out of the hotel, a long process, and then went down to John's. They took me to dinner and saw us off on the 8:45. Had a roomette APRIL 8 MONDAY Woke up before the porter called and we were dressed and ready to get off long before we reached Essex Jct. My cold is no worse and after a bath, breakfast and a few doses I was fit to go to work tho' my foot is very stiff today. APRIL 12 FRIDAY Very busy day at the office, hectic in fact ending with a long meeting of the Executive Board of the Ladies of the Faculty. When that was over I went home and went to my bed where I had a good nap. Elspeth called me to dinner about 7:00 and at 9:00 I was leaving, all dressed up in a long dress, for the Mortar Board formal at Waterman which lasted until 1:30. I left off the ankle bandage, wore heels and stood up a lot but my foot stood it fairly well. Glad to go to bed at 1:30 however. The new thryoid [thyroid] medicine does not agree with me too well I fear. APRIL 13 SATURDAY Very busy morning and it was nearly 1:45 before I got home for lunch. Went back to the YWCA retreat this afternoon until 4:00, then downtown for gas and back to write to John & Betty and do my long neglected accounts. SUNDAY 14 APRIL JULY 18 THURSDAY Beautiful clear day, much warmer than yesterday. JULY 20 SATURDAY DKG Woke up very weary - went to office for an hour; then out to Southwick for DKG meeting and to Allenwood Inn for lunch and P.M. meeting. Have felt heavy and tried all day. Throat very sore; think I am getting infection & poison from some source. Need a thorough check- up. May go to Leahy Clinic to really find out what is wrong. Feel too sleepy, legthargic to be normal; it is most unpleasant. SUNDAY 21 JULY AUGUST 28 WEDNESDAY Today was a busy one at the office with a candidate for the Directorship of the library coming in, several new students and Mr. Kroepsch to verify the Freshman Orientation program. Mrs. Weitzel took the Handbook copy down and [w]ill have the Freshman Camp copy ready. This evening Mollie Sullivan and Anna Smith came over for supper. We had beefsteak mashed potato, Zuchini [zucchini] squash a tossed salad and apple dumpling for dessert. We played anagrams afterward until 10:00 and then I did the dishes and was all too ready to tumble into my bed. AUGUST 29 THURSDAY This is a drear, chilly, dark day a bit colder than yesterday. I was at the office for an hour and a half and then picked up Cleo Duncan and Mrs. Perry to drive to Montpelier for the Executive Committee of the UCCW. at Mrs. Gridley's house. Everyone was there except Mrs. Peterson who is not yet a member of the Board but is to be considered for the vacancy of First Vice-Pres idency left by Mrs. Spoerl's resig- nation. Miss Gridley gave us a nice luncheon and we worked hard until four P.M. Mrs. Perry came back with me and after I had warmed up the steak I had a satisfying supper and have done a lot of things this eve - wrote to Patricia Wright, have done up three wedding presents and cleared my desk, SEPTEMBER 14 SATURDAY Up early this moring and left for home at 8:45 A.M. taking Sadie Tobin with me. A lovely day with maples beginning to turn. Arrived about 10:15 and built fires, put washing to soak and got lunch. This P.M. washed, gathered apples called on Myrtie; dinner at Eleanor's with Jean Bunnee Mary Louise and her mother and Eleanor's guests. Mr. Albee came today to put furnace pipes together so tonight we had a fire, very comforting. SUNDAY 15 SEPTEMBER Beautiful day. Sadie went to early mass and I mopped kitchen and washed before church. Buffet at Jean's 1:30. Called on Elspeth this P.M and ironed my clothes, went to cemetery at sunset. OCTOBER 25 FRIDAY Warm and sunny today but a high wind blew all day and when I drove down to the garage a big elm was down on Pearl St. Hoped to get away for Craftsbury before noon but had too many people coming in and also Miss Crabbe is quite ill today so I had errands to do for her. Finally got home about 1:30, had lunch packed bag and made ready. Went downtown to get the grey car which Beebee says he has been driving but I drove it only as far as the house and it made so much noise and acted so very ornery that I put it in the garage and took J.M.A's car to drive Miss Crabbe to the hospital. She has had a terrible migraine for 36 hrs. I left her there to rest over the week-end, came back and loaded up to drive home. I doubt if I can ever use the car again with any pleasure. OCTOBER 26 SATURDAY Had a nice drive home yesterday had supper with Jean. last tonight took down curtains, put washing to soak. SUNDAY 27 OCTOBER NOVEMBER 9 SATURDAY Spent a long, quiet and very restful day on the train and was really glad to do nothing. Found Ella Marie here and we had a refreshing cup of tea. Isabel came tonight and will go up with us on Tuesday. Very weary and went to bed with a book at 10:30. No word from John since he went back more then ten days ago. It worries and saddens me. SUNDAY 22 DECEMBER DECEMBER 23 MONDAY Cold, raw day and very icy where the walks were not cleared yesterday. Isabel, Faye, Elspeth & I went to church where there was a good congregation and excellent music by the adult choir. The Chapman & Harwood children were baptized. Since then I have done accounts, wrapped a few packages, written some letters, read the paper and a little in a new book. Opened the package from G. Kelso which has mystified us so much and found a fine wool shawl from James which he bought in Orsk, and entrusted to Mr. Kelso to bring home for my Christmas. It is very soft and warm. DECEMBER 25 WEDNESDAY I woke up to the rattle of the stove lids down below and looked out on a dazzling snowy world. We had over breakfast in Bunnees room after which I got dressed and undertook the tasks of getting order in the living room, setting the table and making mother's foamy pudding sauce for the plum pudding which Pauline Saunders sent from Vancouver. We opened our gifts, or at least I did all of mine and Jean and Bun made a good beginning. Clarkes Bailey came in and I gave him his Xmas book. Helen, Will, Harriet Jean & Janet came for dinner and we had a very delicious one with good cheer and relief that James will be home soon. They stayed to watch Jean & Bun open the balance of their many gifts, then left to welcome Stuart and Lucie who were driving out from Irasburg for supper.
