1
JANUARY
Very cool but clear and
sunny. Went to church
where we celebrated
the Lord's Supper and it
was a beautiful service.
Had a picnic dinner
out of the refregerator, then
went over to to Jean's a bit
before 3:00 to help with the
Open House. About eighty
people came, including
Alex. Avis and the three children
also Jimmy and Lucille. We were
very busy until after
6:00 and I came home very
weary and had a nap under
my nice warm blanket.
TUESDAY
3
JANUARY
Had planned to go to Montpelier
today & take Joy but I was so
tired and it was so cold I did
not want to go so Joy came
over here for lunch to give
Jeanie a free time, Carol
being away. We had lamb
chops, carrots, baked potatoes
plum pudding and coffee
and a very pleasant two
hours.
THURSDAY

JANUARY
Today was cold and blustery.
Went to the church at 10:00
for the annual parish meeting
The church was chilly upstairs
but quite comfortable
in the dining room. We had
a good dinner and after
wards I presided for the first
Time over the WMS. Did
not get home until 4:00 so
refused Jean's offer of an
early supper in favor of a
nap. We left for B. at 6:00 to
attend the Lane Series - Anna
Russell, then went to Mrs.
Tenney's for a late supper for
which I was ready. Home at 1:30
SATURDAY
7
JANUARY
Very cold wind but otherwise
milder so I decided I could
clear up the kitchen without
creating a skating rink
and tonight it is neat for the
first time in 3 weeks. got
off Ruth Osborne's gift and
some letters, supper at
Jean's and went to the
Library for a bit, then home
to do accounts and write
some more notes.
SUNDAY

JANUARY
The thermometer was not low today
but a biting north wind made
it very chilly going to church
and I was cold all day long
after sitting in church with
drafts blowing on my feet.
Had dinner with Jean
dog, Leslie, Carol & Mary E.
then came home to spend
the rest of the P.M. with letters
Had my supper in the kitchen
and did not join Jeanie as
usual. She got stuck and was
very late getting back. went
over for a little chat with
Leslie and then came
home to go to bed.
MONDAY
9
JANUARY
Letter from
John.
It is much warmer today.
The traditional January thaw.
and for the first time in
3 weeks I have not been cold.
Richard drove Joy and me
to Montpelier where I treated
Joy to pancakes and syrup before
taking her to the train. Went
to Huntsman's to get wallpaper
for my room, also samples
for the dining room. Called
on Alice English, did Jean's
errands and got home
about 5:00. Had dinner
at Jean's & spent the whole
evening packing the
baskets of preserves to take
to Burlington tomorrow.
Got to bed at 12:45 A.M.
TUESDAY
10
JANUARY
Tues. Richard was stuck
with the milk truck so
was late and we did not
get off until 11:15. Got to B
at 12:45, had lunch with
Elspeth, went to Vt. Council
on World Affairs Board
meeting while Richard drove
Elspeth to market. Delivered
the baskets to Anna Smith.
Ruth K. & Marianne &
left C. Nulty's with E.P.U. got
home about 7:00, had
dinner with Jean - Carol
at Rowell's - and have

JANUARY
finished Christmas notes
and sent books to Ellen McF.
Turnbull. Donald and R.
took out the rotten apples
and the ashes and I was
able to glean some more
limb wood from the wet pile.
It has thawed all day and
unless it changes I shall not
try to go to Waterbury for the UCCW
tomorrow. Had lunch & dinner
at Jean's. Donald persuaded
me to try a coal fire in the
kitchen stove. Spent whole
evening pressing paper &
Christmas ribbons for Jean.
Hot bath & my bed.
THURSDAY

JANUARY
No Waterbury trip today. It has
rained all day and the roads
from here to H. are slippery.
Herbert here painting the
floor a second coat. Lunch
with Jean and helped Blanche
for an hour. Have packed
Christmas baskets for Miss
Terrill & Muriel, written to
Barbara W. & Mrs. Dale.

JANUARY
W M.S. Board.
This was a very busy day.
I was up early, for me, and
spent most of the A.M. in
cleaning up the downstairs -
vacuum, dusting etc,
had a simple lunch and
was just making the sandwiches
for the Tea when Bea White came.
She got out the bandage material
and went to work, soon to be
joined by Mabel G. & Mrs. Park.
Eventually Janet Urie, Isabel
Marion - plus the three children,
Helen Rowell and Carol came
and we had an hour's dis-
cussion of the year's pro-
gram, then our Tea

and a pleasant visit. Leslie
came in and had a cup
of coffee with us. I was
weary by the time we were
thro' and I had dishes
washed, order restored, etc.
Went to Jean's for supper.
Saturday I accomplished
very little, it seemed to me
tho' I was busy all day after
my late rising - 9:00 A.M.
before I woke up. Leslie is here
and came in for coffee this
P.M. Had dinner at Jean's
Leslie and I watched

JANUARY
Flower" Disney - played
2 games of Canasta and
then saw Noel Coward
in "Blythe Spirit" with
Mildred Natwick. got to
bed very late and today.
Sunday, am weary.
Went to church, to the Library
for an hour, had dinner
and did the dishes at Jean's
and then went to bed for
2 hrs. Have written to John
and several notes etc
had hot milk & toast
and now am glad to
mail my letters and
get to my bed.
MONDAY
16
JANUARY
snowed
today.
Slept rather less than well &
woke up feeling flat. Have
not done much today except
get two simple meals and type
out the WMS. program for
the officers and committee
chairmen. Richard came for
a while this P.M. to cut some
wood, sweep the barn and
the cellar which I'm very glad
to have done. We were all much
shocked and saddened
to learn this A.M. that Mary
Elliott had died of a heart
attack early this A.M. So far
as anyone knew she was
perfectly well. Answered
shocker letter tonight.
TUESDAY
17
JANUARY
David came over, to my back porch
this P.M. dragged the suet down
which I had hung out for the
birds and ate it all.
Tues. Home all day doing
WMS letters, listing things
to go in Safe Deposit Box, mopping
kitchen, ironing bathroom
curtains, washing window etc.
Was at Myrtie's for dinner and
Blanche sent over my supper
or most of it. Very good liver
which I cooked, and a salad.
I opened jar of tomatoes which
were very good. Finished
the WMS. work and got
AAUW papers in order.
WEDNESDAY
18
JANUARY
Today the sun came out and
the world was lovely - the hills
out East glittering with ice
crystals. Very busy this A.M
with laundry, packing etc
went to Jean's for lunch
then to Mary Eliot's funeral
at Hardwick and to the bank
to put my securities in the
safe deposit box. Washed my
white sweater, picked over the
stuff from the old desk and
to Jean's for supper. Have organized
the kitchen tool cupboard and
written to Dr. Ladd. Had a
nice letter from John today.
FRIDAY
20
JANUARY
Up early and flew around
fast getting breakfast, dishes
tidying up, etc. done before Richard
came at 10:30. Put up laundry
and Mr. J. is to come this P.M.
to turn off water. Sent plants
down to Myrtie's, left the rest in
John's room for Blanche to water.
Packed in the gift baskets etc
& got off to B. After lunch
Richard took EP.U. on errands
and then left for home. We
delivered baskets to Mrs. Hughes
& Miss Terrill and I had my hair
done. This evening spent three
hours at C. Nultys with Mrs
Graham on AAUW. revision
SATURDAY
21
JANUARY
Slept badly, due to arm hurting
so this A.M. called Dr. Rust and
went down; he sent me to the
D.G. hospital for x-rays, and
he came at 1:00 to give me an
injection of cortisone in the
elbow joint which he thinks
will relieve the soreness etc.
Home for late lunch, called
C.A.W who came and took
me downtown to get my shoes etc
then home for tea, which was
just what we needed. No time to
go to Ella Marie's and glad to
stay quietly at home. Left the
CW apps. material at their office
& UVM staff sent home by Leslie
SUNDAY

JANUARY
This A.M. my arm very stiff & painful
so did not go to church but listened
to two services on the radio. EP.U
& H. went early to Dr. Ladd's class
after dinner H. went to Museum
and we took naps. My arm was
much better by night. C. offered
to drive us to church but too late
for the others. Got standby seat
on 3:15 plane but may go by
train anyway. Spent quiet
P.M. and evening - wrote some
letters and read a bit but
do not feel full of energy.
MONDAY

JANUARY
Snowing this A.M. and altho'
the reservation was finally sure
decided to take train at 12:30
from Essex Jct. took taxi to bus
and had my large bag checked
at Essex. Long, tiresome trip
and reached G.C. at 9:30 but
had to wait 35 min. before I
could get my bag so did not
get here until 11:01. got off at C
instead of Tuckahoe so missed
the taxi Agnes sent to meet me.
My arm is much better today
and I think the cortisone is
going to work. Very weary
so to bed & will go in to
NYC. tomorrow P.M.
TUESDAY

JANUARY
Revived by two cups of Agnes's
good coffee and a night's
sleep was able to unpack
and re-pack one bag, had
lunch, a nap and Agnes took
me to the 3:23 train so
I got to Phoebe's about 4:30,
where a very nice warm welcome -
open fire, hot tea and Phoebe's
interesting conversation
made time pass swiftly. Out
to Longchamps for a very
good dinner, came home
and sat by the fire for
a couple of hours and
then to bed. Phoebe has
all the week planned.
WEDNESDAY
25
JANUARY
Had breakfast in bed, which
Phoebe thinks is a great treat
but I would rather sit up
and eat normally. She has
a very pleasant, homey
apartment and she is a
wonderful hostess. We finally
got dressed, I talked with
John & Betty, and then I set
out to walk down town to get
my shoes at Lane & Bryant
It was very cold & windy
got my errands done & took bus
back met Phoebe & Mary L. at the Colony
Club had lunch & then to the
theatre, "Tiger at the Gates," very fine
took subyway [subway] down to 23d
THURSDAY

JANUARY
St. & had dinner with John & Betty
& taxi back. We sat up and
chatted until 12:30 A.M. Today
we did not go until time
to meet Amy Groesbeek for lunch
at Cosmopolitan Club where
she & a "city" friend, joined us
Then we called on Emily
Potts, who is a wreck - poor
woman, & home where I
had a nap & Phoebe prepared
a delicious broiled chicken
& avocado salad for our dinner
afterwards we played
Canasta and she won
Tumbled into bed about
11:30, very weary
FRIDAY

JANUARY
Cold -
This A.M. I woke up feeling a bit
old. Agnes bro't my tray but I had
no interest in food. Finally got my
bath, dressed and packed my bags
accompanied by a running con-
versation from Phoebe and at 11:00 said
goodbye & took taxi to G.C. Checked my
bags and walked back up Madison Ave
hoping to find shop where I had seen
the plastic tray but got so cold that I
went into Dr. Sockman's church for a half-
hour to rest & get warm, then hunted
up Au Canari d'OR where Joy
met me & we had a very good lunch
then took bus back to G C. for my train
to Tuckahoe. Agnes met me and we
had dinner, watched TV & went to
bed early

Lovely, clear cold day

Up early but it was stormy and
ice on driveway so we did not
go to Bible class: walked to church
and James joined us there and
came home for dinner which
was very good. He left about 5:00
to drive back to Bellport.
MONDAY
30
JANUARY
Heavy rain.
dark & drear.
Took milk of Mag. last night which
got me up at 4:00 A.M. Very
weary. We had to go to market
& PO. to mail EPU. the key this
P.M. Agnes spent A.M. at art class
Johnnie in for lunch not feeling
too happy as his water pump burned
out last night. I did a batch
of letters this A.M. to Phoebe,
Henry Fuller, EPU. & paid the
fire insurance on my car.
TUESDAY

JANUARY
Clear, windy, Cold
The gloom of yesterday gave way to
bright sunshine so as soon as we
had done the morning chores
we set out to shop at Bronxville.
Exchanged the coral sweater for a pale
blue set at Bloomingdale's where
I also opened an acct. Got lipstick, etc.
Had a long nap after we came
home & then dinner, very good, &
enjoyed T.V. especially the Phil
Silvers Show and the $64,000
question. Had invitation to be
guest of honor at Kake Walk Feb 16
also invitation to Phi Sig parties
Do not feel so very good today. Had
lunch at Schraft's. Must get at
my letters tomorrow.
WEDNESDAY

FEBRUARY
Clear & cold
Woke up after a restless night
feeling as if I had a "germ". Have
done my laundry and cleaned
the rooms upstairs and down
in preparation for the eight
ladies who came at 3:00 for
tea. We had a very pleasant
time and Agnes's table and
the refreshments were attractive
and the latter very delicious.
After the guests left we did
up the dishes and put things
away, had a snack for supper
soup and sandwiches, and
watched T.V for a while. I
still feel as if I had a "bug"
but maybe it is [illegible]
THURSDAY
2
FEBRUARY
Pouring
This A.M. it snowed, then turned
to sleet and by noon to a deluge
of rain so we took a taxi to
Mrs. Daivers for lunch. We had
a very pleasant time, a delicious
luncheon of fried chicken, rice, green
beans, fluffy hot rolls, chutney, and a
delectable dessert. Jerry D. is a very
accomplished harpist and there
were three, no four harps in the l.r.
She played for us on the large concert
harp and on the small Irish harp.
Came home to a quiet supper and
TV. evening. Had letters from Mary
Webster in re report and Dr. Ladd
Wrote Jeanie and paid bills.
Tired & back very lame
FRIDAY

FEBRUARY
Colder
today.
Clearing
Feet all in this A.M. Back very
lame - slept badly and seem
to have more cold. We drove to
Tuckahoe with laundry, got the
tickets for tonight's trip, and
mailed letters. I got aspirin &
have taken one. Mended my gloves
and washed hose. After lunch
we both gave ourselves manicures
and Agnes had a brief nap
We left here at 5:23 P.M, took
train in to G.C. and bus to
George's apartment. where we
had a delicious dinner and
a good visit. George has a very
attractive apartment. We left
at 9:00 and were home early
SATURDAY

FEBRUARY
Cloudy, and snow.
This morning we went out
early to market because it
looked threatening. It was all
we did for by noon an icy
rain began to fall which
changed to sleet so the road
up the hill was very slippery.
James came about 4:30
and at 6:00 took us out to
the Birchwood Inn where we
had a wonderful dinner
roast beef, etc. Came home
and watched TV for a while
after which James left for his
bed at White Plains, and
we were glad to go to bed also

FEBRUARY
Lovely day.
This morning the ice had gone
on the streets but we had to
skate down the drive on our
way to the Bible Class at 9:30
It was interesting. Went to
church where James joined
us and then came home
for one of Agnes's good
meals. Spent a quiet
afternoon and evening
James left for Bellport at
4:30, Agnes had a nap and
I did the Times puzzle.
Had T.V. this evening.
I have been very lame
in my back for the past
few days.
MONDAY

FEBRUARY
Stormy
Agnes went off to her art class
and I did up the morning
chores, some laundry and
several letters. Johnnie came
for lunch. We had a letter
from George H. enclosing $100
for our projected trip to
Washington which we hope
to take next week for three
or four days. It was a most
happy surprise. Sleet is coming
down again today.

FEBRUARY
Warmer 40°
Cloudy.
FRIDAY

FEBRUARY
Nice day.
We did our household
chores and left at 10:30 to
pick up Mrs. Bartlett and
go to lunch at White Plains.
where Mrs. Baker was our
hostess at Ebersole's restaurant.
Mrs. B. was going to see her
husband at the hospital
forget her bag, which we found
in the car. Met her again
at the restaurant so she joined
us for lunch after which we
went to Mrs. Baker's home
first dropping Mrs. B. and
played Bolnra until 4:30.
Agnes not feeling too good
tonight.

FEBRUARY
Cloudy. dark day.
We went out early to do some
marketing and pick up a package
at the Centuck P.O. It was well
we did because by noon it
was pouring rain. James
called from L.I. and got here
about 4:30. Wanted to take us
out but we declined and
had cheese fondue and a banana
cream pie for supper. We stayed
in and watched TV until James
left, then went to bed. Plan
on leaving Wed. for Wash. D.C. for
three days. Phoebe called this
evening but I have not heard
from John since Monday.

FEBRUARY
Sunny -
James came to take me to
church. We went to the Dutch
Reformed in Bronxville which we
enjoyed very much. Agnes was
not feeling too well so did not go -
but she prepared a very good
dinner for us - roast beef etc.
& James bro't some especially good
icecream. After dinner we
drove up to see John, Chris and
the children and had a pleasant
time & nice ride home but I
do not feel too good - lame back
& a heavy feeling - maybe too
much dinner. James left as
soon as we got back & we spent
a quiet evening & to bed.

FEBRUARY
Lovely day
Had planned to go to NYC today
but did not sleep well and
have a headache so decided
to stay at home while Agnes
went to her art class. Have
washed, ironed and done
up the work.
TUESDAY
14
FEBRUARY
good day
Felt much better today so
Agnes took me to the train
and I went in to NYC. Had my
hair done at Stern's but it is
not tight enough to stay as I
could not get the operator who
usually does it. Tried on hats,
got check cashed at F. Simon's,
bought navy shantung at Arnold
Constable's, had cup of hot chocolate
for lunch & took 4:30 train back
Had tea & later dinner, did
my nails and started packing
my bag
WEDNESDAY

FEBRUARY
Raining
Woke up to rain but it was not too
hard. Packed bag & John took us to
Station. Got B&O bus near G.C. and
arrived in Washington at 5:03
at station the first blow fell - no
rooms less than $12.50 & $11.50
but maybe tomorrow we can have
one. Had dinner at cafeteria
nearby and walked down to see
Garfunkel's windows, then back
to hotel, sat for a while in lobby
then to our rooms. Called Betsey
Ruth S. & Joan so have two dinners
arranged for and will go up to
The Capitol tomorrow at noon
to call on the Senators. Much
warmer here but I have a touch
of a cold
THURSDAY

FEBRUARY
Statler Hotel
woke up early, had breakfast in the
Coffee Shop and took taxi to the
Nat'l Gallery which is as beauti-
ful a place of its kind as I have
ever visited. We wanted to see Aunt
Kate's bust by Rodin and by inquiry
located it in a storeroom to which we
were conducted by a Mr. Campbell
Visited the Capitol & had lunch with
Joan Eldredge, saw the two senators
& my old friends in the Secretary
office, especially Emery & Mr. Watkins
This eve. I went out to Ruth's for
dinner & a very pleasant evening
after which they bro't me home
and I read a while, got to bed
and slept well until 8:30
FRIDAY
17
FEBRUARY
Cold & dark
This A.M. I was late for breakfast
so I joined Agnes in the Coffee
Shop but we were too late for the
sightseeing trip. Went down
to Garfunkels where I called the
CEW & learned where the W.D.P
was to be and we took bus up
there. It was a fine service, the
church crowded & Mrs. Wedel
& the Philippine lady who went
on the Fellowship Team spoke. Came
back, Agnes went to rest & I to
W.&L's, walked back and at
6:30 we went by taxi out to
Georgetown to have dinner
Had a very good one and a
pleasant evening. Met Liz, who

is very attractive. The two girls brot
us home in their two tiny Austins.
Sat: This A.M. went to the Smith-
sonian for two hours & back to W &
L. for lunch. I do not feel good today.
Packed our bags and got off
by B.&O. at 3:45 P.M. Trip was
tiresome and more comfortable
than coming down. Had supper
on train and got in on time
so caught the 8:23 train out
here and were home by 9:00
weary and went to bed early.

FEBRUARY
Rain
Agnes did not go to Bible
Class but did attend her
church whereas I stayed
home & listened to a Sunday
service on TV. Had baked
ham for dinner, wrote some
letters and rested ourselves
we find that we are both
weary.
MONDAY
20
FEBRUARY
Sleet
Agnes decided not to go to her
art class due to sleet but it
was all melted by noon so
after a morning spent on
accounts and letters we
took off for Mt. Kisco where
Chris gave us tea and we
stayed for a very delicious
beefsteak dinner and drove
home later. Greg was in
fine form and very amusing
albeit a bit active. Tina
her most charming and we
had a very pleasant
Time. Did all our laundry
this A.M.

Bright, lovely day but much
cooler.

FEBRUARY
No mail today because of
the holiday. We drove over
to Bronxville as Agnes
tho't some of the stores would
be open but they were
not except the super
market so we came on
home and had our
dinner and it

FEBRUARY
Very cold
windy
Clear but very chill out today
Agnes went to her class while
I washed and wrote letters. She
came home early & we went
to Mrs. Scotts for lunch with Mrs.
Ben Allen, Mrs. White, Mrs. Woodward
very pleasant party but we
were chilly and tired when we
got home so decided not to
go to the church for the Casa
Materia concert tonight
but walked to and went
to bed early. Have not heard
from Jean but had a letter from
James today and expect to
join him in NYC on Sat.

FEBRUARY
Clear
not so cold
This A.M. Agnes was feeling low
due to sleepless night and the bad
effects of the new medicine so she
called Phoebe and found her also
ill with a cold so we canceled
our trip in to NYC. for lunch. We
did marketing and I mailed home
surplus papers, shoes, clothing etc
Hand lunch early. John not at work today
because Chris is ill, probably worn
out with too much painting
plus Greg for excitement. He
is a handful.
SATURDAY
25
FEBRUARY
Rain &
wind.
James invited us to go in to
NYC for lunch and to see
the Cinerama today, but
Agnes was not equal to it
so I went in alone, took
subway to 72nd St. & walked
to the Wellington Hotel where
I met him & we had a very
good lunch, then went to the
Roxy theatre to see "Carousel"
which was good. It was pouring
and a stiff wind had come
up so I was a but damp by
the time we got to the car. We
drove back to Bronxville &
had dinner at the Virginian
which was very good indeed.

FEBRUARY
Up early but no Bible Class
so walked to church and
there James joined us. Later
he took us to White Plains
for dinner at Ebersole's -
very good, and for a drive
to see the new UP. church
near Bedford. It was very different

Busy morning while Agnes
was away at her class.
Washed, ironed, packed
some and did up three
boxes to send home by
mail. Johnnie Came to lunch
and at 3:00 Agnes took me
to the train. I took bus up
to 72nd St. got some flowers
for Phoebe and left them with
the doorman, took bus back to
Y.C. and subway to 42nd
& to 23rd St. Found Betty looking
much better but John is having
gland trouble, Betty cooked
a good dinner and we
had a nice visit. Took 9:23 home

FEBRUARY
Woke to see a blanket of new
snow over everything. Packed
and was ready to go to P.O
with boxes but Agnes was
afraid to take the car out so
had to leave them. Johnnie
came for an early lunch
& took me to the 1:01 P.M. train
to NYC where I got a red cap
& a taxi to air terminal
There had an hour to wait so called
Mattie Webb and bought a
gift for Blanche. Got 3:45 plane
lumpy at first & I felt dizzy
but after Albany it cleared.
& I arrived before Jean. Came
home via Waterbury. It's cold.

FEBRUARY
Lovely day
I woke up quite rested and
refreshed, unpacked my
bags and took the things
I shall not need over to my
house which I found very
warm and clean except
for a few dead flies. The
plants look a bit the worse
for wear but I expected they
would. Mary Bailey is still
ill with a virus cold. Morris
was here tonight and Carol showed
me her diamond which
is a very pretty one set nicely.
I hope they will be very happy.
And so-to-bed.

Lovely day
Blanche had to wake me up at 9:15
when I was still dead to the world.
A very busy day, first in the
preparation for the WMS. dinner
then the dinner for forty. the
announcement of Carols
engagement, the WMS. meeting
and the clearing up and
so forth afterward. Leslie came
and is a great help. The others all
went up to Agnes Young's this eve
but I had to write my UCCW
report for Mary Webster and
was at it until late but
finally finished and
mailed it. Got to bed
at 1:30 A.M.

Snowed
This A.M. it was dark and
drear. Snowed most of the
morning. I was busy with
writing until noon. This P.M.
have sewed new seam binding
on Jean's blankets and spent
an hour at my house. Melted
snow and cleaned up the
plant dishes, swept up the
dead flies and did some
work on my files, Choir
rehearsal here this evening
but I'm staying upstairs
and hope to get to bed
at an early hour. Carol
has been away most all
day. Jean busy at her desk.

Thawing
Much warmer today and
snow is settling. I have
done accounts, finished
the blankets and ironed.
This P.M. went to call on
Mary & Myrtie and had a
nice visit. Mary has had flu &
has not been out for three

Snow

We woke to a blizzard out it is
not cold. I walked to church
because Jean was late and
had hard work keeping my hat
on. Had a good congregation
nevertheless. Morris here for
dinner - pot roast - and all
P.M. while the girls were off to
C.E. I wrote Ouida and James,
also started work on my in-
come tax. Worked for two
hours in the Library while
Jean was off with the dogs
& entertaining M. got supper
late as usual and
read in Mary Chase Book

Pleasantly mild and snowed
lazily all day. Have been
working on the income tax
figures, having found the 1955
form in my checkbook. Went
to the house to water the window
boxes and get peaches for the
Queen Pudding I made for
dessert for lunch. Carol worked
on farm accts. We had pan
cakes & sausage for supper -
Jean off to the school Board
meeting this eve. I mended
her green coat and sewed on
a button for her. Carol off
with M. home late & eating
in the kitchen now

Town
meeting.
Up early and as soon as
Leslie arrived from Burlington
we picked up Dr. Park and
went to Town Meeting. Nothing
exciting developed altho there
were some tense moments and
some amusing ones. Carol left
before noon, we had lunch there and
Mimi Martin and her friends who
are staying at Lucian Day's, joined
us. It was over before 2:30 so we
came home, I packed my bag
and we drove back to Burlington
where I unpacked at Elspeth's. Later
Leslie came & she and I were
guests of her cousin Mr. Mago
for dinner at the Black Cat

Snowing hard
Got appointments at Dr. Taggart's
for having my teeth cleaned
at 10:00 and at Poulin's for a
shampoo etc at 2:00. Had to go
on the bus and by taxi but was
glad not to have a car on my hands
Invited to Pi Phi House for supper
at 5:45, then joined M.M.W. at
Waterman and we went to the
Chapel for Mass Meeting, which
went off very well. Walked home
thro the snow. The campus is so
beautiful tonight. Tomorrow
have two committee meetings,
one at C. Nulty's on Revision
of A.A.U.W. By-Laws and one
at Waterman on Sullivan Sch. [Scholarship]

home to lunch & to work on

It was windy but mostly clear
this A.M. I got a ride with Kay
Hunt to the bus terminal
where I took a bus to Barre
Then waited an hour in the
hotel then went on foot thro'
the wind to White Gables where
I met Stella Brooks and the
others of her club. Had a good
lunch and spoke on my trip.
Mrs. Jackson drove me back
to the bus and eventually I got
home where Elspeth has beefsteak
ready and other good viands
Anna Smith will drive me
home tomorrow so I called
Jean & we will have luncheon

Beautiful day
This A.M. the sun came out, the
sky was a brilliant blue and
the effect, with so much fresh
snow, was lovely. Anna S. here
& Eleanor C. came for me at
10:30 to drive me home where
we arrived at 12:30 and had
a fine dinner as Jean's guests
They left about 3:00 and I
unpacked, took things over to the
house, watered the plants with
melted snow and this evening
helped Jean at the Library until
about 10:00 Had a letter from
John tonight. He has had another
severe nosebleed so could
not go to court Monday.

Very high wind
This A.M. I was wakened by the
wind in the evergreens outside
my window. It has continued
all day, drifting the snow so
many could not get thro to church.
It was Girl Scout Sunday and ten
girls managed to get there. Dr. Park
preached about the anti-segration [segregation]
problems in the South. He also played
the organ as Agnes could not get
here. Morris came to dinner. I have
rewritten Helen Rowel's report of
WMS for 1955 ready for the Pres-
byterial meeting on Tuesday and
also called Miss Lamson in re
AAUW By-Laws revision. She
cannot get to B. Tuesday or Wed.

Today was a busy one as
I had several chores to do
and Mr. Borgmann came
for lunch at 1:00 and
left at 3:00 P.M. He talked over
with me the UVM Develope-
ment drive in Orleans &
Essex Cos. this spring and
we are saving time in the
first week of May for three
regional meetings. This P.M.
I sewed the binding on another
blanket, mended Jean's red
dress and took the spots out
of two tableclotes [tablecloths] for Blanche.
Tonight M. was here and we
discussed theology until late.

This A.M. Harry Rowell came at
9:30, having picked up Dr. Park
and we drove to Barnet Ctr
for the meeting of the Exec.
Board of the VT. Presbyterial. Mrs.
Corless, President knows nothing
about parliamentary rules
or how to preside so we wasted
time but even so were through
before the Presbytery session
adjourned. Home to dinner &

another tablecloth and written

picked up my bag and rode

busy, mended, washed, helped

linen sheet. Went with Hermie

sketchy job of cleaning up
the floor. Jean has a sacro
trouble so went to St. G. to see

day, and cleaned up the study
after Hermie finished the
book shelves which look very
well, Herbert painted the linen
closet one coat and tomorrow
will do the shelves. Have finished

Got up early and was on
the way home by 9:00. A.M.
Found the roads much better
dry in most places and
altho' rough I had no trouble
getting up the hill. Mr. Jeffers

now it is all running except
in the laundry while it still
might be cold enough to freeze.
I'm very weary today and
did not go to the Library this
evening but hope to get to
bed early tonight. Have

Gloomy and cold. Woke up

sleep than usual. Jean was
to be back from her walk

preached and did not stop
when his subject was exhausted.

McGuire Boyd, Natl. Pres. as the
speaker and she was excellent.
One hundred from Vermont &
N.H. there. Received all sorts of
"loot" from various business
firms etc. I left promptly to
go to the hospital to see Mrs. Cushing
and to retrieve my purse

of the Missionary Society
here with a picnic out

Warmer today. I did not
go to church as I had so

my suitcase packed. Left on
time and was here at 2:45

Old Home Day.
Mixed bread last night with
view to taking it to the
Food Sale at the Common but
I tried baking it in the stove,
had too hot a fire & burned
the top. Gave one loaf to Jean,
one to Myrtie and kept one. Met
Flora & Pearl Keeler at noon at
the Common & bro't them home
here for lunch to avoid the hot-
dog ration. Had a meeting
on "Human Resources" with
Flora after wards but am still
vague about what she wants.
Home weary, at 4:30. Did not
go to Variety Show this eve.

Had busy morning, picked
beans, weeded, cooked a bit

so we had lunch and

we listened in on the con-

Wilson came early & poured
Jean & Judy Long came to
serve and stayed to wash the
dishes, a very gernerous act. I
had 18 Town Chairmen, Mr.
Smith & Mrs Keeler. The whole
affair went off very well

Cold but clear & sunny. I slept

very short that I do not get
