The whole aim of good teaching is to
turn the young learners, by nature a
copycat, into an independent, self-
propelling creature, who can not merely
learn but study - that is, work as his
own boss, to the limit of his powers.
This is to turn pupils into students.
January 1 Monday
Very cold icy day; rained last night
and walks and streets are glare ice
now. Finally decided against going
out at all so did not attend Mrs.
Ramsay Smith's annual New Year's party.
Wrote letters and cleared up my desk
somewhat. Felt a bit better today
but no like myself yet. Back lame
and no pep.

and I was tired & Elspeth was "limp" so we
did not go to church. Went to Robinson for
the opening dinner there which was very
nice.

Bitterly cold today, bleak and dark,
intended to go to church this A.M. but
finally Elspeth persuaded me to stay
home inasmuch as the "Religion
and Life Parley" begins at 3:00 today
with Vespers at 5:00 and a forum
this evening.

February 11 Sunday
Very weary this A.M. but after a good breakfast for which
James appeared at 9:30 I felt better. He drove us to
church and later to dinner at the Park. We
went at 4:00 to the Chapel for the University
concert. It was not as good as usual. Many
were gone from the choir and orchestra so
the volume was small. James left at 5:30 to
go to Milton to spend a few days with Rege &
Adeline. He is coming back here to
see the dentist Saturday.

Was up early this morning because I
had to speak to the Catholic Daughters
on Dunbarton at their annual breakfast
at 9:00 AM. I hoped to get thro' in time for
church but was very late. However I
slipped in to the back pew and
heard part of the service.

V-E. Day.
We had classes until 11:00 A.M.
then all went over to the chapel
to join in a V-E. Day Service of
Thanksgiving. Prof. Dykhuizen spoke
and very well too.
This evening I went to the YWCA
Board meeting and dinner at
6:00 which was very late beginning
so I did not get over to the
church for the VE day program
until it was nearly over. Very
weary tonight.

I took Elspeth to church but felt too
sneezy and snuffly to go myself so
went home and took asprin. This eve.
I went to Vespers at 4:00 and heard
Dr. Horton who was good. Later went on
down to the Hillel Dinner. It has rained
all day and still is dripping. We had
a nice dinner and the group
was interesting.

For the first time in three weeks we
have had a whole day without any
rain and with glorious sunshine. I
went to church and have tied up
magazines, received the Victory Bond
canvaser, packed away my water
things, cleaned the linen closet and
done some office work
June 9 Saturday
June 10 Sunday Finally got packed
up and off this A.M. about
11:00 A.M and drove home for a
two weeks vacation from being
a Dean. Arrived to find Jean and
Bunnee just finishing lunch so I joined
them. They have no cook or maids.
Went into the house, built fires
and got the house aired out
before bed time. Threatens rain
tonight.
June 11 Monday
Very busy day and I did not
try to wash as it rained hard.
Hunted up two dresses, the white
satin and the white eyelet muslin
which I wore in 1908 - to send
to Nancy Tenney as possible
wedding dresses. She is to be
married in July. Had supper
with Jean and Bunnee.
June 12 Tuesday
Did a big washing today
and luckily it cleared
off so it was nice and
the clothes dried beautifully.
Worked out doors digging
weeds out of the rose bud
and edging the delphinium
bed. Was so lame and weary
I could hardly get upstairs
to my bed tonight. It is nice
here but lonely. John won't
come I am sure.
June 13 Wednesday
Today made two futile trips to
Hardwick to meet Charlotte and
she finally came to the village on
the late bus so I got her there, all
due to Neil's having sent her
card back to Burlington instead
of holding it for me from Sat. to
Mon. We had a good visit before
turning in. Tomorrow we
are going to wash the porches
the car and anything else
that needs it.
June 14 Thursday
Beautiful day. Cleaned both
porches and got out the
porch chairs with Charlotte's
help. She is a grand girl to
have around. Had supper
with Jean & Bunnee.
June 16 Saturday
Took Charlotte down to
Hardwick for the 11:00 bus.
It was nice having her here
and we both enjoyed
it.
June 17 Sunday
Went to church and saw many
old friends. Had dinner with
Jean to which James was also
invited. Bunnee cooked very
good chicken. James may have
to go to Russia to advise on the
building of a Lend-Lease Oil
refinery near the Caspian Sea.
Had good visit tonight with
him.
June 18 Monday
The lawns begin to look some
better now that I have the aid
of Charlie after his farm work
is done at night. He has mowed
all around with the scythe and
has also raked most of the
front lawn. I have worked
hard today - washed and
went to movies at Newport
with OBG in her car tonight
to see a "National Velvet" which
was good. Fog bad on way
home.
June 20 Wednesday
Was out straight all day as I had
invited Ruth Osborne, Jean, Bunnee
Mary & Myrtie for supper. Made
rolls, a cake which never rose,
noodles & ham, vegetable salad
and ice cream. Was so tired
by time dishes were washed
that I nearly dropped in my tracks
Dorothy Stewart came today and
was also here for supper.
June 23 Saturday
June 24 Sunday
Communion today. I played the piano.
This P.M. at 3:00 had a very nice
memorial service at the church
for Luther Heidger, who died on a
POW Jap freighter, probably last
September. His wife came, also
John & Nina, Paul & Bessie and
Ruth and the girls. Had dinner
at Jean's with Bunnee as cook.
Could not start my car tonight
until John Gebbie primed it with
June 25 Monday
gas. May or may not
go tomorrow.
10:00 Leave to return
to work.
Up early and spent three hours
getting everything in order and
things packed to return. Car went ok
as far as Hyde Park when it stopped
on the hill. Finally got pushed to a
garage and had to wait while a new
fuel pump was put in, the second
one within two weeks! Got here
at 1:15, tired and hot but had to
hurry over to college for Student
Aid meeting. Very weary
tonight
June 27 Wednesday
Very much all in this A.M. Ruth
and girls came at 5:00 and we
had supper at cafeteria. Later they
went to movies while I had a nap.
Got them all to bed finally
and was glad to go myself.
Did not accomplish much
today but the pile on the desk
is a bit smaller. Bought coke
and Ruth got ice cream so we
had a "spread" after they came
from movies.
July 24 Tuesday
12:00 Leave on 12:35 train
for Cleveland.
Left at noon for Albany - waited there until
11:20 P.M. took sleeper and was able to
change upper for lower berth but it was
very warm and I slept little as the
air conditioning went off.
July 25 Wednesday
Arrived an hour late, went to Carter
Hotel and got room which I shared with
Miss Louise Woodford of Florida. Had
meetings morning, afternoon and evening
and was so tired I could hardly get
to bed at 11:15. Very hot today, 92°
The chairs very hard but the reports
from San Francisco very interesting.
August 14 Tuesday
Japan surrendered today
and the news was broadcast
at 7:00 P.M. by the radio
stations. President Truman
called in the press and gave
them the news. I have been
listening to the radio all
evening and it has been
a thrilling experience but very
sobering too.
October 17 Wednesday
Beautiful Indian Summer Day
The men were here early. Fred
built a fire in the furnace
for me. I had breakfast with Jean
and got over to the house promptly.
Worked hard all day. The men
have taken the wall all down
and are now digging out behind
it before jacking up the foundation
stones.
December 26 Wednesday
On our way back today the car
skidded 300 ft. and collided with
a light pole. No one hurt but me C.P.
Smith sent a man out to get us and
I got home to bed, badly bruised
all over and right foot badly
twisted. Car is pretty well wrecked.
Another car came along and took
Joy to the train. James was driving
and he is full of contrition. I am
glad it was no worse. Had Dr.
Levinson but she cannot
December 27 Thursday
Telll yet whether any bones are
broken or not. My whole right side
is black & blue. Found a letter
from John here when I came also
a package. Must stay quietly in
bed for a day or two anyway.
James went back on the plane
tonight. I ache in every bone but
I am not seriously hurt.
It is however, a great nuisance
to be laid up now when
it is so busy at the office.
December 28 Friday
Bruises the most violent black &
blue today all the way from my
toes to my shoulder. Very lame
and sore. James called up
tonight from Boston. He is filling
out the insurance and accident
report for me.
