Left early to drive to Goddard where we attended conference and had DKG luncheon after which we had the initiation in the Library. All went very well but I was so weary when it was over that I could hardly think. Miss Terrill and Miss H. came on the bus and returned with me. Others staid over Sunday. SUNDAY 18 JANUARY JANUARY 19 MONDAY 4:00 War Relief Committee JANUARY 21 WEDNESDAY I spent some time getting ready my speech for tonight then took bus to Montpelier where I had my lunch at the Tavern. Saw Lillian Dwinell who looks a wreck. Mrs. Franklin Dwinell has died after four years of hopeless senility. Took bus to Hardwick and from there to Orleans where I called on Avis and stayed there for supper. Avis & Alex have a nice baby and are very happy I think. Avis went with me to the Club where I spoke and then we went home to find Stuart Anderson waiting to take me back to East Hill for the night. Stayed at Helen's in Janet's room. Very weary. Helen's mother died today and will be buried from home Friday. 7:30 Orleans Book & Thimble Club. JANUARY 22 THURSDAY Up early, had good breakfast and then Stuart brought me to Burlington; he is on his way to enlist at Rutland. Got back just in time for a University Council meeting. Mother is getting very unsteady on her feet and has great difficulty getting around the house even with her cane. She has cramps very badly at night and they seem to be growing worse. I can see that she has failed in strength very noticeably since Christmas. She longs to see John and I wish he might come if only for a week end but I expect things are pretty discouraging with him. They are going to give up their apartment and move to a less expensive place before Mar. 1. JANUARY 23 FRIDAY Castleton Meeting on Professional Stability So driven with work and mother so uneasy about my going that I finally telephoned Dr. Scott that I would not be at the Castleton meeting. JANUARY 24 SATURDAY Busy morning and had to go back at 2:00 P.M. for a meeting of honor societies to discuss Security Fund Drive SUNDAY 25 JANUARY Sun today but very much colder. Did not sleep until after 2:30 A.M. so feel a bit blear eyed. Went to church which was nearly full and heard a very good sermon. Home to fix the veal chops for dinner. Has grown steadily colder all day. Busy with ATS & my accounts. JANUARY 26 MONDAY 8:00 Neighbors Club JANUARY 28 WEDNESDAY 6:00 Founder's Day Supper 6:00 P.M. 7:30 Joint Conference JANUARY 29 THURSDAY Cold today. Very busy day at the office and I missed Constans very much. The Secretarial girls came in for an hour and we got the most pressing mail answered. More yarn sent from B. for BJ's for girls to knit. 4:30 U.V M. Senate Public Relations Com. met in Security Fund Office and did not get away until 6:15. No time to market so ate scraps for dinner very good. Wrote to John and helped Mother get to bed. She had a bad night JANUARY 30 FRIDAY Very busy day at office. Got new DKG file so rearranged and trans- ferred all material to it. Had the usual number of personal conferences, went down to C.P.S.Jr. to sign note for balance owed on car, to drug store and market and got back just in time for Senate meeting. Very much of a flop, to my mind. Refused to accept War Emergency Committee's report rec. physical education for men. Reversed vote twice. I was completely out of patience with them. When they tried to change Phys. Ed. requirements for women I objected and they left UV.M. Senate. it as it was. Helped with dinner and to give Mother hot bath, rest, etc. Worked on accounts until sleepy. JANUARY 31 SATURDAY 12:30 Sigma Gamma Coffee Hour. Southwick. Security Fund dance at Waterman at 8:00 P.M. Informal. SUNDAY 1 FEBRUARY Coffee Hour Vespers 4:00 Mother needed me today so I did not go to church FEBRUARY 3 TUESDAY 7:45 UVM. Alumnae - Mrs. Rowell. FEBRUARY 12 THURSDAY 3:00 Tea for Mrs. Carrigan. FEBRUARY 17 TUESDAY 6:30 Covered dish supper Theta Alumnae South wick. FEBRUARY 21 SATURDAY Today was a holiday at college so I was at home part of the morning did the marketing, errands etc and was ready to take Miss Whitney's place when she went off duty. Mother suffered severe cramps once but seemed better later. I put on my white dress after I had bro't Miss. W. up at 6:00 P.M. and went over to the Fa-So-Mo-Da-Banquet. I was late but was forgiven. Very good food and a fine program. I spoke briefly on Hobab, came home so that Elspeth could go to the Kake Walk. Mother all fixed for the night when I came in and eager to hear all about it. Slept well SUNDAY 22 FEBRUARY None of us went to church today and I did not go out except to drive the nurse home & back. A decided change for the worse seemed to come to Mother just as she was eating her dinner. She seems confused and her speech is thick. I fear for what it potends. FEBRUARY 23 MONDAY Mother seemed just a little better this A.M. but the cramps persist and it seems to me that they are now not confined to the limbs but affect the whole body. I stayed with her this P.M. while Miss Whitney was off-duty and she slept a good bit. FEBRUARY 26 THURSDAY Mother is very ill today and I have to face the fact that this time no amount of love and skillful care can keep her with us for much longer. Dr. French was here and changed the medicine but I do not think that he feels there is much that can be done for her. I wish John could be here but I know that he has great burdens these days and will come just as soon as he can. I called him on the telephone tonight and he will come tomorrow. FEBRUARY 27 FRIDAY Mother's condition this morning was definitely worse and she has not been fully conscious except by spells all day. John wired that he would take the 8:00 P.M. plane from New York and be here at 10:00. I worked at the office most of the morning, came home to lunch and then drove Miss Whitney home for her rest period and came back to stay with Mother. She was quiet most of the P.M. but about 5:30 began to be very restless and appeared to be having cramps again. I was glad when it was time to get Miss W. who is so tenderly skillful in giving her the medicine and food. Elspeth had a rich broth of which she took quite a bit but it is harder & harder for her to swallow. I went out to the airport at 9:30 to meet John. Mother too drowsy to recognize him FEBRUARY 28 SATURDAY Mother has been unconscious most of the day, all in fact except that this morning while I was at the office she spoke once and said: "I want to see John." He came in at once and she knew him and tried to say more, to ask for Betty, John thinks, but her strength failed and she slipped back to sleep. It is a great comfort to us both that she knew he was here, recognized him and spoke. She took some brandy and a little soup but can swallow only with difficulty. Miss Whitney is very kind and does everything fo her. SUNDAY 1 MARCH Got up at 1:30 to help turn Mother and realized that she was failing fast. Stayed close by thro' the night. Once we thought she re- cognized us. She grew weaker and at noon we realized that it would not be long. At 2:07 she quietly drew one last long breath and was gone, so MARCH 2 MONDAY peacefully and quietly after all the pain and stress of the past few weeks. I feel so lost and empty but it is good to feel that she is at peace at last with no pain, no anxieties and no fears. I shall try to live worthily and not lose the sense of her nearness: I believe that she will pass on to reunion with all her dear ones and I am so thankful that I was able to care for her and give her every comfort this winter with loving hands to minister to her in the last hours of her life. I pray that I may always be able to keep my solemn promise to her to keep close to John and to help him whenever he needs it, as he will. She loved him with such a deep and tender love and by reverses and disappointments MARCH 3 TUESDAY of the past few years so worried and saddened her but never once has she lost faith that God would guide and strengthen him and bring him and Betty out onto a straight path. 'Good night, sweet Mother, and may God's holy angels guide thee to thy rest." Monday. This morning I had hard work to keep control but after John and I had been down to see Mother I felt better. She looks so peaceful and so quietly at rest. We selected a casket and went again later to take flowers to be with her tonight. I took two of Mrs. Turnbull's carnations to put on her hands. Agnes wired that she will come to Montpelier and Dora who was here today, will meet her and bring her to Jean's. Dora and everyone is so kind. Many people have called today and flowers have poured in. MARCH 4 WEDNESDAY This A.M. Robert called to say that he could go with us to Craftsbury which was a great relief. Many boxes of flowers came some of which we took with us, the rest to come with Henry later. We drove down to Gurney's to get them and so Elspeth could see Mother again. She looks so peaceful but not just like herself, more like Aunt Harriet. The drive home was not bad except very wet and everyone was most kind. I was very tired and went to bed early in Bunny's room. Wed. A.M. I was up early and at 10:00 we went to the church to arrange the flowers which were many and very beautiful, a lovely tribute to Mother. Our white carnations were so beautiful. Dora, Charles, Father McCray and Agnes came for lunch and went with us to the church. It snowed 4 in last night and blew into drifts so many people could not get there. We left E. Hill about 4:30 and got back about 7:00 MARCH 5 THURSDAY Agnes and John and I had a late breakfast this morning and then chatted until it was time to drive her down to take the bus for Essex Jct. where she was to take the train for Springfield. She will spend the night with Ella. John went with me to market and to the P.O. also to get his berth for tonight. Later he dictated to me an assignment to me of his rights in an invention etc which he hopes may pay something sometime. We had codfish and cream for dinner with baked potatoes like we used to havae when we were children and before I realized it the time came for him to leave. I wrote a letter to Betty which he took with him. I do so hope that he will find a steady position. I shall miss him and worry about him until I know he is safely back. MARCH 6 FRIDAY I woke with the feeling that I was full of weariness even tho' I had slept fairly well. I had a cup of coffee, then a bath and some breakfast and settled down to the letters, cards etc which I listed, along with the flowers and got off a few notes. After lunch I went down to Dr. Katherine's for a "shot" of iron and home again to work with Miss Harris on the Cooperative House lists for next year. It is hard to get under way again and I wonder whether I can go back Monday. I tho't this A.M. that we could go to the movies tonight but by supper time I knew I did not want to go. Lovely anemones came this A.M. from Prof. & Mrs. Myrick. People are so kind. MARCH 7 SATURDAY Very lonely today and as I sat down to write the notes which must go to the kind friends who sent flowers I could not see for tears. Elsepth is very kind and very understanding. I can see that adjusting to life without mother will be a slow process. She has been the center of my life so long and her need of me has kept me close to her in spirit as well as physically 4:00 P.M. Wedding of Betty Marshall & Carl Schofield All Saint's Chapel. SUNDAY 8 MARCH Elspeth and I rose late and went to church. Harriet Dustan came to have dinner with us and she & E. went to the museum while I settled down to letters. Mrs. Dr. Jackson called but otherwise I had a quiet P.M. I find that I'm very tired, both in body and spirit. MARCH 9 MONDAY 4:30 Speaker's Bureau Meeting 7:45 Women of Faculty. MARCH 11 WEDNESDAY 2:30 First Church 3:30 Baptist Church 6:00 Town Girls Supper 7:30 Mass Meeting. MARCH 12 THURSDAY 12:00 Luncheon USO. Bldg. 6:00 Supper Waterman cafeteria 7:15 Meeting of State Com. on Professional Relations. MARCH 13 FRIDAY Educational Conference today and tomorrow. MARCH 14 SATURDAY 9:00 P.M to 12:00 Mortar Board Dance at Waterman Bldg. SUNDAY 15 MARCH Newcomers Mortar Board Vespers. MARCH 17 TUESDAY 6:30 Delta Phi Epsilon 25th anniversary banquet at Paragon. MARCH 24 TUESDAY [image] March - 1942 Sandusky, O. APRIL 10 FRIDAY Left soon after 8:00 for trip to Maine for Student Union Regional meeting, Bleak, dreary day. Wore blue suit and Mother's white sweater. White rabbit hairs came off and stuck to suit. Took Julie Fletcher, Janet Hackwell and Miss Harris Went via St. J. & Conway where we stopped for lunch. Arrived in blinding snow storm, Freda & I were quartered in the guest house. Strenuous meetings all day Saturday, but very worth while. Had lovely dinner - banquet really and Mdme. Laurent, Belgian refugee spoke to us about Belgium under German occupation. Very weary and was glad when we could get to bed. APRIL 11 SATURDAY SUNDAY 12 APRIL Sun was shining when we left this morning but a great deal of soft snow had fallen Saturday and the roads were slippery and difficult to negotiate. Stopped at St. J. for dinner and at Montpelier to see Janet's family. Very weary indeed. MAY 30 SATURDAY Woke to sound of rain and wind but it cleared up some so Elspeth and I drove to the Common for the Monument Exercises where all had to wait for an hour for the band. Did not stay for the address. I am, I find, very tired and the confusion and disorder in the house tire me more but we will get right at it and soon I hope to have things straightened out so that it is livable. The back lawns are high with grass. Jean is using our garden and has planted it. SUNDAY 31 MAY JUNE 6 SATURDAY SUNDAY 7 JUNE Very busy day as I got up early to practice for Church where I played the organ. Took Elspeth up to Lookout. Hated to have her go. The house is empty and lonely. Left for Burlington at 7:00 and got here weary to my innermost bone. JUNE 8 MONDAY Busy day as Freda has left for Maine and we have a whole stack of student aid applications and divers other things to do. JUNE 13 SATURDAY SUNDAY 14 JUNE Went to College Street Church and found it was Children's Day. Can't go home until Tues. or Wed. Expect Agnes will come up and spend a week or ten days with me. JUNE 15 MONDAY Agnes came on the day train tonight and I surely was glad to see her. JUNE 16 TUESDAY Student Aid Committe meeting all day. JUNE 27 SATURDAY SUNDAY 28 JUNE Went to church and played the organ as Lucille has been exposed to the mumps. Myrtie invited me to dinner and I was glad to accept. Lonely afternoon. Went up to the cemetery to take some flowers. Lovely and peaceful there. Wrote to John. JUNE 29 MONDAY Up early and had our washing all out by 10:00 so we tackled the laundry and were busy with that until nearly 4:00 P.M. It was in a mess and I cleared out and threw away and salvaged for the government It looks quite empty now compared with its previous condition. JULY 3 FRIDAY Today Clara and I worked hard all day and finished cleaning the kitchen & cellar cupboards. Bunny invited me to have supper with her at "Monte Carlo" and that was very pleasant. Clara went to the dance at Shadow Lake and I to the Library Party where I was very happy to find Ethel Dutton. I sat with her and we had a nice visit. She and John home for the 4th Clara and I drove to Hardwick to get provisions after 5:00 as I expect James in the A.M. While I was at supper with OBG he called from Boston to say he had to work but would come to Barton on the sleeper Sat. night so I will meet him there early Sunday. No word from John. JULY 4 SATURDAY Very busy morning getting last things done. Clara and I washed and I ironed some and also roasted the beef for tomorrow and made custard for ice cream. I took Clara home at 3:30. At 5:10 a wire came from James asking me to meet him at Waterbury so I hurried off and was there when he arrived. It seems he got off at noon and caught the train by a hair's breadth. We got home and had a late supper of ham and eggs after which he went down to Will's for the night. Jean came in. SUNDAY 5 JULY Cool day. I was up early for I had much to do. Went to church and played organ then home to freeze ice cream and get dinner. Will, Helen and James came to eat with me and after they left I had to rush to get things packed, refrigerator cleaned out and JULY 6 MONDAY all the last minute things done so I could close the house. I went around from room to room drinking in all the quiet and order and peace and wished that I might stay there where there are so many memories of happier days but of course I can't do that for I must get back to work. James decided to g[o] via Burlington so we left about 7:00 picking up Happy Dustan and got here just in time for him to take his train for Boston. I found Freda Harris here and I was glad for I have never felt so alone in my life, I find I am really very tired. The intense physical activity of the past three weeks while it offered an outlet and kept me from brooding, took a toll and I'm lame in every joint. I feel as if I had come to the end of some thing and closed a door. JULY 7 TUESDAY No letter from John yet and I do not know what I can do more. I know that such silences bode ill and I have small doubt that he is either drinking again or that things have gone so badly that he has no heart to write. I do not know what I should do. I wish he and Betty would go up home and stay until fall and give themselves a chance to get rested and away from the problems in New York. I have no more money to give them and even if I had that is no solution but only a poor palliative. I swung into a pile of work on my desk and have been very busy all day yesterday and today. We have plans all ready for tomorrow and I hope the Registration will progress smoothly. JULY 8 WEDNESDAY Summer Session Registration Carolyn, Freda and I were on hand at the Gym at 8:30. The registration is much lighter than last year. Mr. Douglass' mother died on Monday night so he had to leave early today. He looks badly. I saw Proctor Page and Pres. Millis. Everyone is having jitters about the future but I think things will settle down sooner or later. Came home tonight very weary and fell into bed. JULY 9 THURSDAY We were up and at it again this A.M. but very few enrolled. The money came out right the first time so we go away soon after five and went over to Robinson Hall for dinner. We are not using Grassmount this year. Helen Nichols is definitely looking for another job. How I shall miss her! I think it is a cruel mistake to let her go. She is far too fine and too valuable. Betsey Perry and John Harold have left. He has a job in Chicago We shall miss them too. JULY 10 FRIDAY No word from John all week. I am worried and frightened. Jimmy came in today to bring my clock and umbrella. He reports that [illegible] is worse again and I fear what may happen. Busy day. A.M. conference with Pres. Millis after Assembly and this P.M. went after flowers and arranged them for the reception at Southwick tonight. Warm but not hot but I was tired when I got home. Went with Freda to concert & reception, both successful but nothing seems to ease the ache in my heart and the loneliness which sweeps over me at times like a black cloud. JULY 11 SATURDAY Very busy morning and then down to get gas ration card but did not know the number of my tax stamp so had to go home and get it and return after lunch. I went to market and bought two cheap cotton dresses for the hot days which I am sure will come soon. Went to the Marston's for supper - had baked beans very good and an open fire very welcome. After bed time we had a thunder storm. SUNDAY 12 JULY Woke weary but got up, made muffins, got breakfast and we both went to church. Very good sermon. Had dinner at Robinson and have worked on cooperative house assignments and letters all P.M. JULY 29 WEDNESDAY Jean sent some beautiful glads in memory of dear Mother's birthday and I arranged them on her table by her picture with a vigil candle burning. I miss Mother so much still and it comes over me in heartache so many, many times, when some little word or sound reminds me of her. Today I felt very near to her there in the room where she sat so often in the big chair watching for me to come home and where I watched her during those last sad days, her life slowly ebbing away. I have been reading today again the letter she wrote on her birthday a year ago. I think she realized then that she might not see another birthday. Dear mother, how much she did for us and how JULY 30 THURSDAY much I miss her every day, both here and when I go home to the quiet stillness of the empty house at East Hill. I wish I might have gone home this week end but the gas and tires must be conserved for later as I have only the 4 gals. per week now and it takes all of that to get my work done. AUGUST 19 WEDNESDAY Catherine up early, very jittery but I prevailed upon her to eat her breakfast. Her M.A. exam began at 8:00 and at 10:15 she went into the office, glowing with success. She had done a brilliant exam, so Dr. Douglass and Miss Sullivan reported. She and Miss Culey left soon after noon and Kate will return on Friday. The place is very lonely without her. How I wish that she were going to teach in Burlington and could live with me. AUGUST 22 SATURDAY Commencement exercises today and Kate got her degree Very nice but very warm. Busy morning and a rush to get packed, do marketing and pick up Catherine and Helen to go to Craftsbury. Went via Eden Mt. met huge truck of logs, took to the ditch, could not get started tho so had to back down the hill. Finally got home and soon had a fire and a good supper on the table but mean while Helen went out in the sun to pick black- berries, got sick and vomited badly so we put her to bed in the east room with a cloth on her head. Arranged to have C. go to church at the Bend with Miss Tobin. Sadie Seney prowling about at Jean's. Bunny frantic. SUNDAY 23 AUGUST Up very early as Miss Nulty was to leave at 7:30 for Mass with Sadie and got up about 6:00. Helen better and so she could eat her breakfast. She and I went to church and then to Common for dinner. Found car afire under instrument board so couldnt use it and had to borrow Ouida's AUGUST 24 MONDAY to drive my guests up to Hearthside. Stopped on way back and roused Fred who finally came up and towed it down to the garage. It makes me shudder to think what might have happened had the fire spread to the cushions etc. Took the guests for a walk over to the cemetary and thro Alston Woods. Got lost coming back as the trees have grown up so in the pasture beyond the woods that I could not find the old wood road which leads back to the meadow. Up early this A.M. clothes not dry so Lucile agreed to get them in when they were ready. Was cold and wet today, such a change from Sat. & Sun. We got back here just in time for my 2:00 P.M. appointment AUGUST 25 TUESDAY Student aid meeting all morning and much work on my desk I wired Freda to come back at once. Tho't to find her here yesterday. Room assignments must be done this week and conference plans made. AUGUST 27 THURSDAY Hectic day as usual. Miss Harris drove back from Skowhegan today so we can get to work on room assignments tomorrow. AUGUST 28 FRIDAY Charlotte came in from camp today and is spending the night with me. We had a simple dinner of cold ham and sundry things from the refrigerator and she slept on the couch as we could not pull out the trundle bed: Kate must have put a hex on it. We have an idea that we might go to Craftsbury tomorrow. AUGUST 29 SATURDAY Busy A.M. at the office but I finished about 1:00 and came home to find Charlotte there so as soon as we had our lunch we packed up to go to Craftsbury. We went via Waterbury and the trip was lovely and colder as we got near home. Found Jean's library tea in progress so we dropped in there. Phoebe came today for three weeks. Cooked a good supper and visited the library in the eve. I also made jelly or started it and ironed the six sheets etc which Lucile had rescued from the line last Monday. To bed, weary. Paul & Bessie Heidger called this P.M. with the baby. SUNDAY 30 AUGUST This A.M. put up lunches for Charlotte and her three cousins to take to Greensboro, washed, ironed, etc until time to go to Jean's for dinner. Home to make the jelly with apples from Jean's: ironed some more and took a walk down by the lane to see my trees. Lovely evening C. came back about eight and all dead AUGUST 31 MONDAY a while and went to bed early. Up and at my works early. Cooked the jelly and strained it into the glasses. Gordon here to work. Cleaned up the kitchen and packed up to return to B. G. & C. managed to get Jean's bicycle into the back of the car, and it is now in my garage here. Whether I shall ever dare to ride it remains to be seen. Left about 10:30 and got here in time to eat a bite of lunch and keep my 2:00 appointment at the office. Very busy P.M. Charlotte went back to camp this P.M. but before she left she invited me to have dinner Tues with her and her father and Dr. Beardsley Miss H. and I worked all P.M on room assignments. Tired tonight. SEPTEMBER 1 TUESDAY Rooms again today but with Freda to help this forenoon we got the tangle pretty well straightened out. She had to play for a wedding this P.M. so I worked at my desk clearing up odds & ends. Investigator for Civil Service called to get information about Jean Young. It is quite warm today so a white dress was in order. My wardrobe is in an awful state but with all the bills - insurance, taxes, electricity for East Hill, USO, and divers other expenses I can do nothing about it now. Went to dinner with Charlotte etc at Marietta's and had a good, tho' minute steak. Dr. B. came for me and took me for a ride out the Hinesburg Road afterwards. She confessed to disliking me SEPTEMBER 2 WEDNESDAY because of some fancied interference in the case of Elizabeth Richards last spring. Inasmuch as I was not guilty of it and proved it to her she forgave all and gave me a handclasp which nearly crushed my fingers when she left. She is going back to Springfield to open an office for herself soon. Busy all day and came home to a lonely dinner and quiet evening. Mr. Turnbull was in at noon about his job. He has been offered a place at the new Boys Club. I hope we can pay him more and keep him. Isabel Udall was here over night coming from Princeton for her vacation. She left for home on the bus this P.M. SEPTEMBER 3 THURSDAY Woke late so had to hurry breakfast and leave without making my bed. Worked on room assignments and had a talk with Pres. Millis on the furnishings for the lounge for girl's on the third floor. Many details needing attention. This P.M. Dr. Adams and Miss Underwood came to discuss plans for the Congregational Conference next week. More withdrawals today but also some new girls applying so that we have all the rooms tentatively assigned. Home for my lonely dinner and this evening I have written to John and to James. Meant to string my beads which are now all broken, but too sleepy. Learned sad news of death of Alice Morrill. Funeral Saturday in Castleton. SEPTEMBER 5 SATURDAY Was invited to go to Cedar Beach for week-end but felt I ought to go to Alice Morrill's funeral However, it began to rain hard soon after noon and Miss Holbrook and I agreed that it was better not to go. But I also decided that I would prefer not to go to C. B. until tomorrow. Freda and I worked until 3:00 at the office and then I came home and got a rather meager meal and read all evening Cedar Beach. SUNDAY 6 SEPTEMBER got up and after breakfast and some few duties drove down to Cedar Beach & spent all P.M. in a chaise longue out in the sun. A perfectly beautiful day and very pleasant people. Got warmed thro', had good dinner and pleasant conversation. SEPTEMBER 7 MONDAY Beautiful morning out very chilly by the lake. I got up and dressed with teeth chattering. Had breakfast with Margaret in front of the fire and later drove back to Burlington. Not so clear as it was yesterday but nice. Mr. Swift called from the office so I went over and Freda and I worked on rooms etc. until after three. Then I came home, washed and later ironed, pressed my dress and went out to Dorothea Smith's for dinner, which was served in her little cottage. It was nice there with an open fire and we ate in front of it as it was too windy out on the terrace. Home finally and to my bed with an asperin as I felt rather chilly. Dorothea went back to New York tonight. SEPTEMBER 8 TUESDAY Back to work early. Had a long student aid meeting and also several parents coming in. Do not feel very fit today. Think I may have taken cold at Cedar Beach. Finally got a chance to write to James which I have been trying to do for three weeks. Aunt Kate came down today to hear Monsignor Fulton Sheean [Sheen] and Mollie Sullivan gave me a ticket so I went too and enjoyed it very much. The Tobin's took us all in their car. Aunt K. is at the De Goesbriand and will stay until Thursday. SEPTEMBER 9 WEDNESDAY Very busy morning and I have felt rotten, heavy eyed and sluggish in spite of a good night's sleep. Went over to the Museum with Aunt Kate after the Health Service and Library Committee meetings and then had lunch with her & Sadie at the Park but the roast beef was very tough, the corn very over cooked and I did not enjoy the meal, except of course, seeing Aunt Kate. Busy all P.M. with room assignments and after I reached home Proctor Page came over to bring me three beautiful trout which he caught on his fishing trip in Canada. I cooked them and ate two for supper and will have the third one tomorrow. Very tired and went to bed at 9:30 but was restless and dreamed all night. SEPTEMBER 10 THURSDAY Hecticly busy day and no time for lunch as I waited to receive Aunt Kate and Miss Tobin at the office. I also had to go downtown to mail letters to Verna Parker and to girls from whom we have not yet heard as to room. This P.M. there was a meeting of the Advisory Board at 2:00 and the Budget Committee at 4:00 with plenty of other things in between. Came home and warmed up the macaroni for my dinner and after the dishes were washed went to Southwick to hear Dr. Georgia Harkness who was a decided disappointment. Saw the Hawleys' Rev. Leroy Rice and had a little visit with Dr. Todd. Thick fog everywhere tonight. Feeling better than I did this AM - not so punchy. Verna telephoned tonight and I told her to come. SEPTEMBER 19 SATURDAY SUNDAY 20 SEPTEMBER Verna not here. I worked hard all forenoon, had dinner at the Waterman dining room. Went to first Vesper service at 4:00. Very good audience and good address. by Rev. Hugh White. SEPTEMBER 25 FRIDAY Met Kate Wilcox at 11:00 P.M. bus late but she arrived cheerful - How I do like her. She is a rare person. SEPTEMBER 26 SATURDAY Catherine went to the dentist and I went to the office in A.M. This P.M. we went to Colodnys for marketing and then shopped for an hour. Bought a simple black dress. Home and had dinner here. Dance at Waterman but the Witham's took charge so I did not feel obliged to go. Catherine gave me a lovely bunch of asters. Very warm and humid, but windy nevertheless. President's Coffee Hour. SUNDAY 27 SEPTEMBER It rained torrents and blew a gale all day. Took CAW to train at noon and my umbrella blew inside out and split. Got my feet wet. Changed the silver service, took it to Southwick and helped arrange the flowers. Poured coffee and was useful for 2 hrs. Felt like like [sic] toothache SEPTEMBER 28 MONDAY Tues. Tues. Sept. 29. another morning of inter views and very busy. This afternoon went to the "Y" banquet at Waterman but was late because the Advisory Board which began at 4:15 was still going at 6:00. The interest and enthusiasm of the Y group very encouraging Explained GSO to them and the candle lighting service was nice. Charlotte and Florence Wade also there. Good supper prepared by Penelope and Ruth Bunell. Home, dead tired, read a while and to bed SEPTEMBER 29 TUESDAY Monday, Sept. 28. Morning full of interviews and began trying to get together all the evidence about the Allen House stealing case but it was slow work because of the hazy stories told by the many girls involved. Had a busy afternoon, went to the Hotel Vermont to have dinner with the Daily News Editor, Ritchie Low and Mrs. Luening [Loening] after which we broad cast for a half hour on the "Vermonters Talk it Over" Program. Rushed up to Waterman to look in on the Community Concert dinner and spoke briefly, then had to leave to go over to Allen House to get the latest story on the stealing. Found Mary Harmon's slip in Esther's drawer also several books which do not belong to her, on the desk. SEPTEMBER 30 WEDNESDAY Beautiful, clear, cool day Went to office as usual and had seven freshmen women in for interviews. Ouida called up about noon and I went down and had lunch with her at The Park and later took her to the oculist, then went to La Berge to get some button crysanthems [chrysanthemums] for Aunt Kate & left them at Sadie Tobin's. This P.M. tried to finish resumé of the stealing story but had so many people in that I could not do it. Home at 4:00 to dress for Tri Delt Tea and then home to dinner of scraps and to S.U. Mass meeting. Got away early and so got three letters written, Phoebe, Elspeth & James. Verna out at a lecture. OCTOBER 3 SATURDAY Busy morning SUNDAY 4 OCTOBER OCTOBER 16 FRIDAY I was very busy with freshmen conferences all morning but I left early this P.M. came home, put the place in order, vacuumed the rugs, dusted etc. Packed my bags and gathered in Clara White, Bethia Noble and Janet about 5:00 P.M. and we drove home. Stuart & Lucie were home both very happy apparently. Stuart went up to the house and helped unload my bags, I went to Jean's for the keys and found them at supper so I was glad to sit down to scrambled eggs with them. I later went home, built fires in the kitchen and the furnace & put away my things. Jean wanted me to stay with them but I felt like sleeping in my own bed even tho' the house was not too warm. Wished that John might be there in the house with me. OCTOBER 17 SATURDAY Was cold all night and got up lame in my joints. Spent the morning in the barn loft, cellar and attic and by noon had collected a truck load of junk which Kenneth took to the Village. Cleaned up and had nice luncheon with Jean & Ouida at Aunt Kate's. Left early to get at my flower beds but got only half of south bed done by the time it was dark. Put bone meal around the peonies, transplanted phlox and set bulbs. Dressed again and took OBG & myself down to Mrs. Tenney's for dinner which we ate in front of the fire place Very pleasant. Am tired tonight. SUNDAY 18 OCTOBER Rained in the night and it is colder today. Made jelly and then went to church and to Jean's for lunch. Back home to work on my speech for tomorrow. Went to Inter Community meeting at church and spoke briefly. Good audience. Finished my outline for talk about 11:30 P.M. OCTOBER 19 MONDAY Damp, dreary day. Did some laundry this A.M. but too wet to dry clothes out-of-doors. Worked hard all morning, polishing up my talk and after sketchy lunch drove to Morrisville to speak to Women's Club at P.A. Prof. Eaton sent all the girls in so I had to revamp what I had prepared to fit them. Saw some people I knew but felt a bit low in my mind and very lame Came home slowly, had supper at Jean's and afterwards went home and worked until time for bed putting things away and ordering in general. Stopped on way home today to see Elspeth who will go back with me tomorrow. Very tired tonight and very lonely here. The house is so empty but yet I love it and every yard of earth around it. If only John could have come home with me it would have been so comforting OCTOBER 20 TUESDAY Up early and sped about all forenoon cleaning the refrigerator, putting away the tools, cleaning up stairs etc. Moved the porch boxes into the cellar which was a chore as they are very heavy. Think Gordon must have put the coal grates into the junk as I cannot find them in the cellar. Will bro't two loads of furnace wood and piled it in the cellar, also some for the kitchen stove. Saw that I could not get off by noon so called the office and canceled appointments. About 3:30 P.M. had things in pretty good shape so picked up Elspeth and her things, went to Lookout for canned fruit etc and drove back via Cambridge. Snow on the mountains and a lovely sunset which soothed my weary spirit. No letter from John when I got here. Found Verna and her OCTOBER 21 WEDNESDAY mother here, never was more weary but had a meeting tonight so could not get to bed early Wednesday I woke up with no life at all - very lame and completely flat. Had very busy day at the office and a long meeting tonight with House Presidents. Did not sleep well last night because the double windows are on and it was much too warm. Mrs. Parker stays until tomorrow afternoon. no letter from John today either and my heart is heavy with anxiety over them both. The path has been so rough these last five years and I fear for the future. OCTOBER 22 THURSDAY Busy day again because we had the State YWCA meeting here from 11:00 A.M. until 3:30 and a meeting of the Health Council tonight at Waterman. I feel some better today having slept better last night. Mrs. P. went home on the bus. It is nice having Elspeth here and we seem to fit in together very well. We had a good YWCA Council meeting and a very good luncheon upstairs in the faculty dining room. Pres. Millis is away on his vacation which he has surely earned. Rainy and bleak today. OCTOBER 23 FRIDAY Very full morning with Freshman appointments all forenoon and part of the P.M. Dean Swift's birthday so we had tea to celebrate. I worked late and as Verna was out we had supper by ourselves and I did not go to the One-Act Plays I found a letter from John when I came in this P.M. and I was so relieved to see his handwriting that I was weak in the knees. He had written to me Oct. 10 but neglected to mail the letter. He seems very tired and discouraged and my heart aches for him. I do hope & pray that he gets some thing to do soon. He is so dear to me and I hate to have discouragment and defeat his portion. OCTOBER 24 SATURDAY Busy morning at the office. Verna left for home on early bus. A letter from Concord saying that Aunt Martha died at 10:30 yesterday. I shall plan to go to the funeral which will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday. I am so sorry that I did not go down to see her this summer even if there was no time nor money with which to do it. Went to Friends in Council this P.M. at Margaret Whitings but did not go to S.& S. dance tonight. Invited to Prospect Hall for dinner tomorrow. SUNDAY 25 OCTOBER Took 11:30 bus for Concord and had 6 hours on it. Arrived in rain, got some dinner and went to Eagle Hotel and to bed at 8:30. Called Bertha Gill. Woke up at 11:00 with indigestion but finally got to sleep again. OCTOBER 26 MONDAY Up and had breakfast tho' not yet quite settled in my stomach Bertha came for me and we walked up to the Home. Roy & Rege did not come and I learned from Bertha that they failed to remember Aunt Martha's birthday. A few of her old friends were there and a very nice minister read a beautiful service. We went out to the cemetery in the rain and laid dear Aunt Martha to rest beside Uncles Charles. There were lovely flowers, Bertha's, Roy's and mine. Bertha took me to lunch and I got the bus at 12:40. It poured all the way back and the trip was long and tiresome. Elspeth had a nice dinner when I got here. Verna did not come until we were all thro. I am tired but so glad that I went to Concord. The last one of mother's family is now gone. NOVEMBER 5 THURSDAY Today I hoped to get my hair done and my car serviced but I was not able to do either as the garage was too busy for the car and I had too much on my desk to get away to the hair dressers. NOVEMBER 9 MONDAY Jean called last night to see if I were coming today and said she had still some pre- ration gas and if I would come she would fill up my tank. It was such a lovely day that I decided to go and so at 11:00 Elspeth and I set out. We went over the mountain and found the trip delightful. It was not very cold and the sun shone all day. I got to Casa Mia just as Aunt Kate was starting so I took her on to Jean's, Arthur & Jeannette came too and we had a nice dinner and a pleasant time. I saw Ted about putting on the double windows I got my two bushels of potatoes also took out some screens, opened the safe & got spoons etc. Walked over to the cemetery just before sunset then drove back to Burlington. Found no letter from John. NOVEMBER 10 TUESDAY A gloomy day with wind and rain tho' not cold. Depressing and not very satisfactory as to accomplishment. Verna went to a USO dance tonight and we went to hear Walter Hard. No letter from John. Had a card from Bertha giving me Roy's address so I remailed the letter which had come back from Kansas City, Mo. Also had a letter from Mrs. Pond the old lady who was so kind to Aunt Martha and one from Inez inviting me to have Thanksgiving with them at Montpelier. I cannot go because there is to be only the day and I must be here to attend the Campus dinner at Waterman. We went to church at the Methodist church union service and afterwards met Cora and she came home with us. At 12:30 we went to Waterman to meet Ray and the girls and there we stood in line quite a while but finally got a very good dinner, turkey, etc. We came back here for coffee and soon after three Ray, Cora & Jean left to drive back to Springfield. I wrote letters to John, Betty, James and Aunt Kate, and had a very quiet evening at my desk. NOVEMBER 27 FRIDAY Busy morning beginnig [beginning] wrong because I slept over and was not quite on time. Went down town to the Church Council meeting at 10:00 and it was still going at 12:00 so I left to come back to the office for an appointment. Was busy until 4:00. Miss Healey came from Barre for an interview about the position as secretary also I interviewed a Miss Everett. Cut faculty meeting to come to Miss Storms for tea and to meet a Miss Mary French who may be a good house director sometime. Left just time to dress to go to the Bennett's for dinner with Pres. & Mrs. Millis, Mr. Meyers and Lester & Oliver Prindle. Had a very nice evening Colder tonight. NOVEMBER 28 SATURDAY very chilly day. Very hectic morning but I got quite a bit done after noon while waiting for the sophomore Aides to finish the sale of Defense stamp corsages. Had lunch and went to Colodny, to market, then downtown on errands. Had old-fashioned codfish and cream with baked potatoes for dinner and it tasted good. DECEMBER 17 THURSDAY much colder today Very involved day with many interruptions and people coming and going all day long. I have not found any gift for Aunt Kate yet and Jean's has not come. Elspeth and I went down to the Tri Delt House for the Russian Relief supper. There was a crowd there and a very "sandwichy" supper. Home to wait until 10:30 to go to Southwick to greet the carol singers. Charlotte came in to call early, then I left for Southwick where I found Prof. Ladd who is good but tiresome. Singers were late but finally arrived and we fed them cocoa & sandwiches and I brought a load home, then went back to help the girls clean up the kitchen and took them home. To bed 12:00 Russian Relief Supper at Tri Delt House. Carol Singers - 10:30 at Southwick. DECEMBER 18 FRIDAY A very hectic day as the Juniors and Seniors were to leave at 11:10 A.M. in order to lighten the traffic on trains and busses tomorrow. There is so much that I want to get done before Carolyn leaves on Dec. 31 that I do not know if I can take the time to go to East Hill even if I can get there. Gasoline is "frozen" here today - none on "A" cards and only 3 gals. on a B card. I got 3 but as my tank was practically empty that will be of little use to go home on unless I can get more next week. I was home for dinner and the evening for the first time tonight since last Sunday. It is getting colder tonight. Juniors & Seniors left this noon and the others go tomorrow. DECEMBER 19 SATURDAY Bitterly cold 20° below with north wind. Very cold this A.M. I drove the car to the office planning to go down town to do some errands after work but when I came out the battery was dead so I called the garage and walked home. It was bitterly cold with an icy wind blowing from the N.W. I wanted to go to Liz Gurney's wedding so I went out to take the bus but it was late so I walked all the way to St. Paul's and I was so cold when I got there that I shivered all thro' the service. Did errands, marketed & finally got the car back in time to go to the airport to meet DMH. Gladys & Pit also met her so she went home with them for supper and I came back to eat oyster stew at home. Later I went for her but some time meanwhile my radiator froze up and I do not know the extent of the damage yet. This A.M. it was 30° below zero on Ledge Rd. and 28° here. We did not try to go to church. Dorothy left for home about 10:00 AM and I have worked on Christmas things all day. Got John and Betty's box of fruit jelley etc ready and some DECEMBER 21 MONDAY Sunday. other packages tied up. My heart is lonely and I cannot keep from thinking of last year when Mother was here, Frail as she was then and knowing, I am sure, that she probably would not be here for another Christmas Day, she was full of thoughts for her dear ones. Our Christmas Day together with no one but she and I I shall never forget. No letter from John last week but I hope he wrote today and I shall get it Mon. or Tuesday. I wrote James today and have been out to mail it It is way below zero now and Altho the wind has gone done I know it will be a bitter night. Monday. Another bitterly cold day with a keen wind. I have not been really warm since last Friday. Got more cards and John's second box off today and did a good bit of desk work as well. DECEMBER 22 TUESDAY Not quite so cold today but still far from balmy. Had a good letter from John today and a card from Betty. John has had a bad cold. How I wish that we could be together for Christmas but that does not seem possible this year and I shall go to Jeans and try not to feel too bereft. James has only the day off so he cannot come either. Received several nice looking packages today. Also fixed a basket of jelly, jam etc for the Millis family, one for Anna Smith and one for Jeanette Davis and for Miss Storms. Mr. Turnbull brought us a lovely basket with a jar of coffee!!, six fresh eggs and a jar of pears. All very welcome indeed They are very kind people Got my car back - not much damage DECEMBER 23 WEDNESDAY Busy morning as usual. Went downtown, ordered poinsettia for Dean & Mrs. Swift and plant for the Bennet's also for Mrs. Turnbull and took the latter in when I came home DECEMBER 24 THURSDAY Busy morning with a Student Aid meeting, big mail and a number of errands to do downtown. Bob Paterson called to say he would drive home with & for me. I went to the President's party at 3:00 and got away early so we started about four for East Hill. Roads very good until we got to the foot of the hill but made it without chains. Left fresh roses at Aunt Kate's and took Bob as far as the Dutton's. Found Bunny in bed with bronchitis and Aunt Kate also in bed, worn out from going to Jean's pageant last night. Had early supper then joined Jean and the Girl Scouts in a big sled drawn by the farm horses driven by Will Graham and we went all about singing carols to the neighbors. I was cold but otherwise enjoyed it. Home and helped Jean trim the tree and open packages tied up others, etc until 1:30 A.M. when I just had to go to my bed. DECEMBER 25 FRIDAY Christmas Day. Had gone to bed so late that Jean had to wake me up to get down to Aunt Kate's for mass at 7:30. Father La Veer was a bit late, other wise we would not have made it. Very impressive service tho' I cannot follow it very well. Jean left and Sadie & I had breakfast together. Later Jean & I took a sled full of packages and delivered them arount the village. I gave Mother's warm bed socks and blue shoulder jacket to Minnie McLaren. Had very nice dinner at Casa Mia with champagne and plum pudding burning with brandy, then the tree in the big room. Aunt Kate gave me Aunt Mary's amethyst beads. Home to put Bunny back to bed, then Aunt Kate and Sadie came down to see the tree and Mary Root, Bess, Mary Lett, Mildred & her husband came to call. The maids all away so I prepared supper and we ate on trays in Bunny's room. I miss my own dear family and Mother so much. DECEMBER 26 SATURDAY This morning it was clear and sunny with a light blanket of fresh snow over everything. Breakfast in bed and then I dressed in my warmest clothes & went over to the house. It was bitterly cold in there and I found that snow had drifted in the SE. window and the things in the front cellar - ink, etc. were frozen. I got the things I needed and after a quick look around I left. Jean had the Scouts for lunch in the kitchen. I made griddle cakes for the crowd & later made calls on Aunt Kate, Lottie Harriman & Helen & Will. Roy & Frances were there. I liked her very much at first sight. In the evening I made surgical dressings at the Library until 10:00 SUNDAY 27 DECEMBER Up early today and went by myself to church as Jean was off to Patmos. Sang in the choir & had a nive visit with Ruth Osborne and met her two little girls - not so little after all. Had a very good dinner and as soon as possible afterwards left for B. Picked up EPU and got back, the last twenty miles thro' a sleet storm. Had to get out twice to DECEMBER 28 MONDAY clear the ice from the windshield and was lucky to get up French Hill before it became too slippery to be passable. Glad to get home and put the car in the garage. Opened the rest of my packages and fell into bed. Monday - Went to the office and found plenty to do. Had lovely gifts from James today - a half- dozen silver spoons - coffee size and a silver, glass lined bonbon dish, also a big box of candy. It is a wet, warm thawing day and very dark and dreary. DECEMBER 30 WEDNESDAY Pouring rain Had several appointments this morning and then went down to get my hair done. No bus came so I walked both ways in the pouring rain and got wet in spite of an umbrella and overshoes. Worked a while at the office and finished up several odds & ends. Dean Swift decided to give Edith and Carolyn Sat. A.M off which pleases me. Bought two pairs of gloves and two shirts at Reynolds sale. Could get only Rayon which I detest but shall no doubt be thankful enough for those before silk is available again. Saddened because I have had no letter from John since Christmas. I thought I would surely get one today. Have not felt like going anywhere tho' I told Marianne that I would call her this week to go to the movies. Must economize for the next three months more than ever. DECEMBER 31 THURSDAY The rain changed to snow in the night and everything is white again this A.M. The walking is treacherous and the driving promises to be worse so I decided to go to Montpelier by bus, which I did at 11:30. Got to M. at 1:00 where Miss Randolph met me and we had lunch together at the Tavern afterward adjourning to the Free Public Library to plan about what to do with the Music Library which I was distressed to find had been sent over to the cellar of the Howland House. I had a talk with Governor Wills at 3:00. He had apparently forgotten all about his promise to me in August to do all he could to get a bill thro' providing for the Library. Mrs. R. says he is quite apt to do that - but I did persuade him to move the music & records upstairs where it will be safe. I called at Alice's office and had a good visit with her. Inez is ill with grip, so I could not go there for the night. Came back on the 5:00 o clock bus with Persis Holden. Very, very weary and cold. Memo Page for 1943 Concerts Jan 14 April 5.
