					<l>1940 Mon. Cold day with snow squalls</l>
					<l>at intervals. Called on Mrs. Tenney at</l>
					<l>hospital and spent two hours at</l>
					<l>church helping with New Year&apos;s reception.</l>
					<l>Learned tonight that Aunt Kate is very ill.</l>

					<l>Went to office this morning and took</l>
					<l>Mother downtown this P.M. The Dutton&apos;s came</l>

					<l>from Phoebe makes me much worried about</l>
					<l>Aunt Kate.</l>

					<l>Thurs 1940 College opened today.</l>

					<l>Sat 1940 Very busy polishing off my talk to</l>
					<l>Men&apos;s Faculty Club. Went very well and I</l>
					<l>enjoyed it.</l>

					<l>JANUARY 8</l>
					<l>1940 Stuart and I drove home to attend</l>
					<l>Mr. Dutton&apos;s funeral at the Common: very cold.</l>
					<l>Stayed for supper with Jean &amp; Bunny and saw</l>
					<l>Aunt Kate for few minutes: home in evening.</l>
					<l>1942. Very cold day 14° below zero. Had a S.D. letter</l>
					<l>from John. Betty has been very ill with grip and he</l>
					<l>has also been laid up. Things there worry me. Nina here</l>
					<l>for dinner. So cold had to have the electric heater on</l>
					<l>1943.</l>

					<l>JANUARY 9</l>
					<l>1940 Usual day. Evening went to Mrs. Adams</l>
					<l>to A.A.U.W. at which Chief of Police Thalacker</l>
					<l>spoke. Lock on car froze.</l>
					<l>1943. S. D letter from O.B.G. early today to say Aunt</l>
					<l>Kate has pneumonia and is <hi rend='underlined:true;'>very</hi> ill.</l>

					<l>JANUARY 10</l>
					<l>1943. Called home and learned that Aunt Kate</l>
					<l>is gravely, hopelessly ill. Went over to see Sister</l>
					<l>Collins at the hospital. Will go home tomorrow</l>
					<l>if I can arrange to get away.</l>

					<l>JANUARY 11</l>
					<l>1943. Aunt Kate died at 8:50 A.M. this</l>
					<l>morning following a few days illness with</l>
					<l>pneumonia. She is the last of that generation in</l>
					<l>my family. I Ioved her dearly and shall miss</l>
				</lg>

					<l>JANUARY 12</l>
					<l>1943 her sorely. This P.M. I met Phoebe at the</l>
					<l>train and she and E.U. &amp; I drove home Aunt</l>
					<l>Kate lay in the old parlor from which so many</l>
					<l>of us have gone to their last rest. She looked</l>

					<l>JANUARY 13</l>
					<l>1943 lovely with the flowers which she so loved all</l>
					<l>around her and the candles symbolic of her faith</l>
					<l>burning at her head &amp; feet. The funeral was held today</l>
					<l>at Hardwick and we have laid her beside Uncle Jack.</l>

					<l>Sun 1940</l>
					<l>Mrs. Underwood&apos;s for buffet supper</l>
					<l>1943. A beautiful day. I slept late and woke finally</l>
					<l>to brilliant sunshine and 10° below zero air. Went</l>
					<l>to cemetery and helped Jean, had lunch and</l>
					<l>returned here late in the P.M. Found letter from</l>
					<l>John.</l>

					<l>&quot;The Admirable Crichton&quot;.</l>
					<l>Very slippery.</l>
					<l>Someone banged</l>
					<l>into back of my car.</l>

					<l>to N.Y. on plane: left 7:45 - arv. 9:20. Sleeper to</l>
					<l>Washington.</l>

					<l>Ruth Chalmers and dinner at <unclear>Leta&apos;s</unclear> Took</l>
					<l>sleeper to N.Y. Slept very little.</l>

					<l>train for home. N.Y. very cold.</l>

					<l>day. Colder tonight. A.T.S. not very well.</l>

					<l>1942. Mother died peacefully today at</l>
					<l>2:07. John and I got up about 1 A.M. and</l>
					<l>watched with her until she slipped away</l>

					<l>1942. Today was a sad and empty</l>
					<l>one in spite of many duties. John and I</l>
					<l>went down to select the casket and take some</l>
					<l>flowers, Mother looked younger and so peaceful</l>

					<l>1942. Robt. Paterson offered to drive us home</l>
					<l>this P.M. We spent the night at Jean&apos;s which was</l>
					<l>a comfort. Everyone is very kind and the</l>
					<l>flowers continue to come in great profusion</l>

					<l>1942 A big snow storm in the night and</l>
					<l>wind today. The church was a bower of</l>
					<l>beautiful flowers and we left dear</l>
					<l>mother covered with them. Back to B. tonight.</l>

					<l>1942. John and Agnes stayed over. She left</l>
					<l>at noon for Springfield, Mass. and he</l>
					<l>went via sleeper tonight. I feel very much</l>
					<l>alone and miss Mother at every turn.</l>

					<l>are all gone already.</l>

					<l>Monday DECEMBER 25 Christmas Day</l>
					<l>1939. Fine day. Up early to get breakfast and</l>
					<l>have time to open gifts which were many and</l>
					<l>very nice. Quiet day, just Mother and me</l>
					<l>but very restful.</l>
					<l>1940</l>
					<l>1941 Mother and I alone today. We got up late</l>
					<l>and Mother sat in the bay windows while I</l>
					<l>opened the gifts. She is very frail today and</l>
					<l>we missed John but he called at noon.</l>
					<l>1942 At Jean&apos;s for Christmas. Up early and went</l>
					<l>to Aunt Kate&apos;s for mass and later to dinner.</l>
					<l>Bunny went but had to go back to bed. Later</l>
					<l>Bessie &amp; Mary Letta &amp; Mary Root called.</l>
