<l>SATURDAY</l>
<l>Cold day - showing signs of a blizzard</l>
<l>in the offing.</l>
<l>Isabel and Elspeth went out to</l>
<l>make calls in the P.M. so in</l>
<l>deference to the New Year and</l>
<l>because I felt too weary or</l>
<l>lazy to go out in the cold</l>
<l>to the church reception, I</l>
<l>put on a my violet velvet hostess</l>
<l>gown and stayed in. Margaret</l>
<l>Jones came to call and I</l>
<l>was glad to see her again. We</l>
<l>had a plebian dinner of</l>
<l>codfish and duck gravy because</l>
<l>Colodny's forgot to send the</l>
<l>roast. Had nice ice cream</l>

<l>SUNDAY</l>
<l>Much warmer today and snowing</l>
<l>at intervals. Elspeth and I walked</l>
<l>to church and Dr. Ladd had a</l>
<l>very good sermon on keeping</l>
<l>the tools of the spirit sharpened.</l>
<l>There were very few people there</l>
<l>in spite of the fact that it was</l>
<l>Communion Sunday. I was glad</l>
<l>to be in church again but sad</l>
<l>when I realized how far my spirit</l>
<l>is from being "sharp". We walked</l>
<l>home through the clear, clean</l>
<l>air and it was pleasant.</l>
<l>This afternoon I have sewed,</l>
<l>read and written letters but</l>
<l>my back ached, as usual and</l>
<l>I do not feel as hopeful and</l>
<l>enthusiastic about the new</l>
<l>year as I wish I did. I shall</l>
<l>have to take money from my savings</l>
<l>account for the insurance and</l>

<l>at 5:00. Not much moved by it - too</l>
<l>cold & stereotyped - possibly my lack</l>
<l>of response. It is a lovely church. Home</l>
<l>to dinner and listened to Firestone</l>
<l>program, wrote to Dorothy Harvey</l>
<l>and to bed, very weary.</l>
<l>This noon I waited at home long</l>
<l>enough to hear the President's address</l>
<l>to Congress on the State of the Union</l>
<l>not very impressive nor as forceful</l>
<l>as I expected. Shall be interested to</l>
<l>see what the newspapers have to say</l>
<l>about it tomorrow morning.</l>
<l>Still have a few more Christmas</l>

<l>Woke up weary and had to rush fast in</l>
<l>order to leave on time for Plainfield. It</l>
<l>poured all the way but I arrived in</l>
<l>time as Gov. Aiken and several others were</l>
<l>later than I. Met Mr. Flanders for first</l>
<l>time and liked him very much. Had</l>
<l>interesting meeting until 1:00 - then</l>
<l>lunch and another meeting. I had</l>
<l>to leave at 4:00 and because of</l>
<l>roads went back by West Danville</l>
<l>& Hardwick. Last ten miles very bad</l>

<l>a cold but was able to eat salt salmon</l>
<l>& gravy for dinner. After the dishes were</l>
<l>done we went down to call on <unclear>Naptil</unclear></l>

<l>E. Craftsbury - Heavenly day.</l>

<l>SATURDAY</l>
<l>The blue jay woke me before 6:30 with his</l>
<l>harsh cry outside my window and soon</l>
<l>after I heard John going down to build</l>
<l>the fire. We had a good breakfast and</l>
<l>then rushed around to get ready to</l>
<l>leave at 8:45 but were delayed by</l>
<l>Ruth & Charles coming in so we did</l>
<l>not get off until 9:40, A lovely day,</l>
<l>all sunny and golden. Roads to M.</l>
<l>very muddy & rough but after that</l>
<l>fine so we got there at 11:15 and found</l>
<l>Mother feeling better. John had a half-</l>
<l>hour with her and then I took him to</l>
<l>the train. He left feeling fairly well I</l>
<l>think. I hated to have him go, I love</l>
<l>him more than ever, if that could be, and I</l>
<l>do so hope that he will be able to take</l>
<l>whatever comes with courage and stick to</l>
<l>his determinations to make a fresh start.</l>
<l>It will not be easy but with god's help he</l>
<l>can do it, I am confident. I feel very</l>
<l>weary tonight and was glad to go to a</l>
<l>nap but was waked by telephone, so finally</l>
<l>gave up and went to see Dr. Perkins and</l>
<l>then to market. Early to bed.</l>

<l>SUNDAY</l>
<l>Easter Sunday - Cold and rainy.</l>
<l>This morning Mother is stronger and feels</l>
<l>more cheerful. I don't feel very fine but after Kate</l>
<l>Wilcox came and we had the traditional</l>
<l>Easter breakfast of ham & eggs and hot</l>
<l>cross buns I felt better and, as Miss Bacon</l>
<l>had already been to Mass, both Elspeth &</l>
<l>I were able to go to church, James sent me</l>
<l>the most beautiful roses that I about</l>
<l>ever saw, a yellowish, pale pink, large</l>
<l>and just fresh buds. The Easter music was</l>
<l>nice and the sermon was "Live that ye</l>
<l>may live," very good. It was pouring rain</l>
<l>when we came out. Kate went to Shelburne</l>
<l>but came back for dinner. Mother ate a</l>
<l>good dinner. Miss Bacon took four of the</l>
<l>roses to place on the altar in honor of her</l>
<l>parents and left at 3:30 for the rest of</l>
<l>the day. Mother and I have both had a</l>
<l>nap. My thoughts are with John and</l>
<l>Betty whom I hope and pray may be</l>
<l>happy together today. The church sent</l>
<l>Mother a pot of yellow tulips which pleased</l>
<l>her very much indeed. Easter is a lovely</l>
<l>season and people are so kind.</l>

<l>Very busy day until noon and</l>

<l>at 3:00 to help with the YWCA</l>

<l>Forgot entirely about going</l>

<l>We went to market right after</l>

<l>DECEMBER</l>

<l>TUESDAY</l>
<l>Christmas like this after the travesty</l>
<l>of two years ago and the disappointment</l>
<l>of last year and many other times.</l>
<l>It was truly the happiest Christmas I</l>
<l>have spent in ten years I think,</l>
<l>and the only shadow was my own</l>
<l>weariness, or rather the consciousness</l>
<l>that I am not well, or not as well as I</l>
<l>should be and need to be to do</l>
<l>what my position demands. I went</l>
<l>to bed and slept the best I have for</l>
<l>weeks but woke up with a sore feeling</l>
<l>as if all my bones were tired. I managed</l>
<l>to wash up the kitchen including</l>
<l>the stove, which was covered</l>
<l>with grease, and get the table</l>
<l>linen washed, etc. but by noon</l>
<l>I was a wreck so after lunch</l>
<l>or about 3:00 I lay down on the</l>

<l>came at foure [four]. From there I went</l>
<l>to market and waited in vain for</l>
