Desk Private APPOINTMENTS•MEMORANDA•REMINDERS•DIARY 1938 JANUARY 1 SATURDAY Cold day - showing signs of a blizzard in the offing. Isabel and Elspeth went out to make calls in the P.M. so in deference to the New Year and because I felt too weary or lazy to go out in the cold to the church reception, I put on a my violet velvet hostess gown and stayed in. Margaret Jones came to call and I was glad to see her again. We had a plebian dinner of codfish and duck gravy because Colodny's forgot to send the roast. Had nice ice cream and Elspeth's good cookies for dessert. Got a special delivery letter from John but he did not call up in eve thought he might. Here we go on 1938 - I hope I last through it. JANUARY 2 SUNDAY Much warmer today and snowing at intervals. Elspeth and I walked to church and Dr. Ladd had a very good sermon on keeping the tools of the spirit sharpened. There were very few people there in spite of the fact that it was Communion Sunday. I was glad to be in church again but sad when I realized how far my spirit is from being "sharp". We walked home through the clear, clean air and it was pleasant. This afternoon I have sewed, read and written letters but my back ached, as usual and I do not feel as hopeful and enthusiastic about the new year as I wish I did. I shall have to take money from my savings account for the insurance and other bills this month. I am afraid it was a mistake to give up a $4000 salary for this, even with all the other compensation. JANUARY 3 MONDAY Lovely day, plenty of snow but mild and sunny. Had letters from Marie Driscoll, Lola Yerkes and Cora Schoppe also a "Thank you" note from Johnnie West. Went with Miss Harris down to the First Church for the prayer service at 5:00. Not much moved by it - too cold & stereotyped - possibly my lack of response. It is a lovely church. Home to dinner and listened to Firestone program, wrote to Dorothy Harvey and to bed, very weary. This noon I waited at home long enough to hear the President's address to Congress on the State of the Union not very impressive nor as forceful as I expected. Shall be interested to see what the newspapers have to say about it tomorrow morning. Still have a few more Christmas notes to write. Wrote to Lula Martin today in behalf of the sewing project at Montpelier. JANUARY 4 TUESDAY Cloudy and warmer. While I was dressing this morning the Postman brought two packages from John & Betty. My share was a pair of heavy, dark brown pigskin gloves and a dusty rose, quilted satin house coat, not as becoming as I would wish. Feel rather rotten this morning. 2:15 Council Meeting. Long, discursive meeting JANUARY 5 WEDNESDAY 4:00 Scholarship Chairman - Fraternities Went to Southwick but only three of the girls came - Alpha Chi, Pi Phi and Alpha Xi. Came home late and went later over to the museum to hear a lecture on Egypt - not very good - speaker had a horrible voice and used poor English. JANUARY 6 THURSDAY Beautiful winter day-bright and clear, not very cold. Busy morning and walked down to the Doctor's who strapped my back and gave me a rainbow assortment of green and yellow pills. 11:00 Dr. McSweeney - for treatment. After lunch took Mother for a brief ride downtown and over to Southwick and back. Then went over to my office and to Southwick for conference - Jean Simond and Betty Mellington came in. Home to Miss Storms tea which was very pleasant indeed. Strapped back feeling a bit like being wrapped up in a mummy case. Tea at Miss Storms. JANUARY 11 TUESDAY Very cold today but beautifully clear and bright. Our place was so hot last night that I could not sleep properly and woke up feeling cooked. JANUARY 12 WEDNESDAY Cold today and very slippery but not as cold as yesterday. Busy morning in the office and got started on a memo for Pres. Bailey on the cooperative houses. Went to chapel which was all music very nice. Went to a long Pan-Hellenic meeting after work tonight. Barbara Sussdorf called to ask if I would chaperone the Razz Dazz on Saturday evening. 4:15 Pan-Hellenic - 21 S. College JANUARY 13 THURSDAY Woke up to see the snow falling in huge flakes but it lasted only an hour and then the sun came out for most of the rest of the day. I had a busy and very trying morning and so many interr- uptions that I did not get the letter about Anne-Marie finished until after the office closed at noon. I succeeded in getting my car out of the garage and drove to Southwick this P.M. Long conference with Miss Mariana Palmer and got back in time to sign the letters - then home to do up packages for Betty's birth day and to the P.O where we were stuck in the packing place until I discovered that I was trying to drive with my brake on. Home to dress for dinner over at Warner House where a very nice group of girls are living. Home again to work on my talk to the Graduate Club tomorrow night. Miss Whiting invited me for tomorrow night but I cannot go so it will [illegible] JANUARY 14 FRIDAY 8:00 Graduate Club at Southwick. JANUARY 15 SATURDAY Cold day but bright. Busy at the office all morning. Got away at noon and after considerable difficulty started my car and drove down to the Liberal Club at Van Ness. Small group but interesting. Included Mr. & Mrs. Hall, Rev. Myers, Dr. Soule, Prof. & Mrs. Metcalf, Mr. & Mrs. Slocum Persis Holden & Fanny Shaw. Dana and Margaret did not come. The luncheon was good and we sat around the table to discuss WPA etc until four. Had early dinner and went afterwards, with Prof. Butterfield & Florence Woodward to the Gym to watch the Freshmen play GM Jr. College and the Varsity game with Middlebury. Both exciting and as usual I ruined my stockings on the bleacher seats which are covered with splinters. Therefore I had to go home and change: also get my car out and drive over to Southwick to chaperone the Razz Dazz dance. Very cold night. JANUARY 16 SUNDAY Woke up feeling very weary indeed, and as it was very cold out and Elspeth was tired too, we did not go to church. The boys, Robert and Gordon came to dinner and they enjoyed the dinner as we did having them. The afternoon was a long succession of callers, first Clarence & Freda Fisher, then Joe Carrigan and his wife, then Mrs. Wait Johnson. We were worn out before the last one left, in spite of being very glad to see them all. Mother & I took a nap while Elspeth walked over to see Laura. Popped corn, not too successfully, and wrote a letter; to bed finally, fairly worn out. Hairdresser Midyears Begin. JANUARY 17 MONDAY Cold morning. Woke up rather weary after big day yesterday but got under way. Elspeth has a "crick" in her back and Mother is tired so the whole family is a bit below par. Miss Harris not in this morning as she has a very bad cold. Miss H. not in either but both came this afternoon. Spent most of day working on a memo to go to President Bailey on need for another cooperative house. Went downtown and had my hair treated and a dry shampoo. nearly froze walking up and down Church St. doing a few errands. Home to lunch and back to the office. Miss H. came this P.M. and from then on had only interruptions. Home to dinner and glad that K.D. affair was called off because of illness of hostess. Wrote to Aunt Kate, massaged backs of family and to bed. Did not sleep very well. 8:00 Kappa Delta Alumnae 237 S. Willard St. JANUARY 18 TUESDAY Very cold day but sunny. 16° reported but probably not official. Council Meeting set for today postponed. Miss Harris at home today, where she should have been yesterday. Jean Stewart came in at my request for a consultation about one of the girls in the house who does queer things. Later I went over to consult Miss Holbrook about case. Very cold walk back against north wind. 4:30 Tea at Miss Harris' room with Miss Whiting. JANUARY 19 WEDNESDAY Coldest morning of the winter but sunny and clear - air like wine. Busy morning as usual. Had H. Smith in but do not think we got very far. Miss Lambert also came in, rather upset; she would like to move to another house and be relieved of responsibility of being House President. Things not so good over there. Home to lunch and got the car out afterward, quite easily, much to my surprise, and went down for Mother's medicine and to the Library to get Bromfield's "The Rains Came." Then to Southwick where several girls were in to consult me and from there to Miss Harris for tea: Mrs. Morrill, Miss Lake, Mrs. Hand and Miss Whiting were there - very pleasant. Took Miss W. home and was almost stuck on the ice in her driveway. Spent quiet evening with family, reading my new book which is very "Bromfieldish" but really says something. Not feeling quite good today. JANUARY 20 THURSDAY Beautiful day, somewhat milder than yesterday, sunny and crisp. JANUARY 21 FRIDAY Beautiful spring like morning with soft, blue haze over things. Was up and out to get the bus at 8:30, for Essex Jct. where I got the Waterbury train. Met the lady who used to be Mrs. Morse 11:30 Chapel, People's Academy. Chapel. whose name now I do not know. Gates, Mattie Green & [T]heta Ellis there. Enjoyed it very much. Went home JANUARY 23 SUNDAY Dark day. Not feeling very well this morning but decided it would do me no harm to go to church so we went in the car. Sermon was good but I was not able to keep my mind on it. Took Miss Bristol down to the Park Cafe where she was to eat, stopped at P.O to mail letter and home to dinner which I prepared mostly. It was quite fun to cook again leisurely. This P.M. went over to Southwick to see Bonnie and found she was out so went to Theta House where I found her. She was tired and glad to be driven home. Dean & Mrs. Swift called while I was away. Got dressed and went over to Miss Whiting's for supper. Dean & Mrs. Swift, Dean Gifford and Prof. & Mrs. Kenman were there. Very pleasant but I was too weary to enjoy it quite 100%. Took Mr. Gifford home, and was glad to get there and to bed myself. JANUARY 24 MONDAY 12:30 Lunch at K. Kelley's apt. Community Concert. First Church. Then I went to Faculty meeting which lasted until after 6:00 and was very stupid. Had to go out to the dessert bridge tonight. Called Helen to ask what to wear. She said a long dress but when we got there only two others besides ourselves had them on. Had to go to Constans for supper and would have enjoyed it very much had I not felt guilty to go off and leave Elspeth alone with Mother. Spoke at AAUW Meeting and home to find that the evening had been a hard one as Mother was faint, nauseated and in great distress. She vomited at ten min. intervals from 10:30 - 4:30 A.M. and neither of us got much rest. Elspeth finally went to bed and I took care of her. I wrote John a severe letter today. Jean is at East Hill. She is in better condition this morning than I expected but I stayed home until 11:30 in order to see Dr. French. He thinks she has now gotten over the worst of it and has taken away all medicine and says for her to keep quiet for 24 hrs. and take no food except a bit of hot milk ect. [etc.] Went to the office this P.M. but did not accomplish much due to many interruptions. Very sleepy by 4:30 and came home early. Did not find my glasses and have no idea what could have happened to them. No letter from John since Jan. 20 in spite of three appeals from me to write since mother has been sick. WPA. home of Mrs. Arthur Isham Pearl St. MARCH 26 SATURDAY Mother very ill from 2:45 A.M. all day. Terrible distress in stomach & bowels. Dr. French came twice and we tried all sorts of things to relieve her, none of which worked. Had to give up my plan of going home. Asked Harriet Jean to stop for some things to send home but she either forgot it or Helen did not want to bother. Anyway they did not stop. Had to get Miss Collins for tonight as neither Elspeth nor I had strength to stay up all night again. I am frightfully weary and feel all in but relieved when Miss Collins took charge so I could go to bed. Called John who said he could get along all right but I know it will be very hard for him and I regret not being able to go. Possibly I can go Tuesday. Mother very un- comfortable til 12 P.M. then slept fitfully. I went down town twice in rain to get medicine. Did not go near the office must go MARCH 27 SUNDAY Beautiful clear, cool day after the rain and snow of yesterday. Woke up feeling very tired but otherwise pretty good. Mother a little more comfortable than she was. Miss Collins gave her too much dial so she was sleepy all forenoon. Tried to get John early but did not reach him until after 12:00 He slept late. Sent Bob & Gordon home with the car and to take John more medicine, food, etc. No snow here but he says it snowed a foot at home yesterday so expect the roads may be quite difficult. Mother was able to eat a very little today and this P.M. had much less distress. Elspeth went out for a walk and I took a nap while Mother was asleep but woke up feeling very uncomfortable. Is colder tonight & is clouding up. APRIL 2 SATURDAY Cold, bleak day APRIL 3 SUNDAY Cold and snow flurries in the air all morning. I woke up early so I abstracted the alarm clock from John's room and built the fire and got breakfast before I called him. Mrs. Hanson came before we were through the meal and had a cup of coffee with us, after which she made an apple pie and a chocolate pie shell for which I made the filling. She stayed for dinner and we had strawberry shortcake. I wrote letters for John and got the mail ready before leaving at 4:30 to come back to Burlington. Stuart drove and Harriet & Gordon rode down too. It is cold tonight, more like November than April. Mother was sitting up when I got here but she is not in good shape. Miss Bacon was ill so I sent her home and slept in my own bed. It was hard to come back again to an atmosphere of problems but at least I shall be busy with my work tomorrow. Looked over my bank statement and see bank- ruptcy ahead unless I can find some more money soon. So many expenses. APRIL 4 MONDAY Fair morning Dr. French came and said Elspeth's heart was tired & she must rest for a week, on her back so she is on the couch today keeping quiet but cheerful, as always. Bleak, rainy day - APRIL 9 SATURDAY Very busy morning in the office and I did not get through until noon so I could not start home early as I planned. Finally arranged to have Bob go with me and Gordon went also. Roads not so bad as last week. Did house marketing and left about 2:30 so we would have been home by 4:00 but we had to stop at House and found the generator of the car burned out. It took 3/4 hr. to fix that and cost me $5.35. By the time we got home it was snowing so Bob took the car home. John looked badly, has a cold and has not been sleeping for several nights. I got a good dinner and we built a fire in the fireplace for cheer and had a quiet evening I wrote several letter for him and he cheered up quite a bit. He feels he must go over next Sat. because his eyes are troubling him and Betty writes complaining of how lonely she is. I wish she had more backbone. E. Craftsbury - Blizzard APRIL 10 SUNDAY Woke up to hear wind howling and to see the snow blowing in flurries past my window. When I looked out the whole world was white with a strong north wind piling the snow up in drifts in the front yard. Had a cosey breakfast and was very busy all morning, sweeping, dusting, washing, ironing, and making soup, cooking ham etc. so John will have food for the week. The wind blew all day but it was clear & sunny. Bob was an hour late getting here and got stuck trying to turn into the driveway but we finally got started. John has taken cold and I hated to leave him but have no choice as Mother needs me and I have lots of work on hand for tomorrow. The drive back was chilly and the roads very slippery so it was 9:00 and after before we got here. Mother very weak but look some better than yesterday APRIL 11 MONDAY Very busy day at the office with a great many details to attend to. A wire from Lula Martin says she is to be here Wed. & wishes to see me. House Director's meeting at Southwick tonight so Miss Bacon stayed until 9:30 when I got away to come home. Mother slept fairly well and I was so tired that I was glad not to have to be up more than once or twice. Wrote to Aunt Kate & Jean before I went to work this morning. Later had a short letter from Aunt Kate who seems to be quite wretched. Dr. French ordered Elspeth to bed today as her heart is very tired so she is on the couch keeping quiet. He said Mother must eat more or she will never be any better. She had a bad night Sat. & a bad day yesterday which wore both her and the others all out. Miss Bacon is all in today too. APRIL 15 FRIDAY Meeting of Goddard Incorporators at Plainfield, Vt. Woke up weary and had to rush fast in order to leave on time for Plainfield. It poured all the way but I arrived in time as Gov. Aiken and several others were later than I. Met Mr. Flanders for first time and liked him very much. Had interesting meeting until 1:00 - then lunch and another meeting. I had to leave at 4:00 and because of roads went back by West Danville & Hardwick. Last ten miles very bad going but got home at 5:30. John has a cold but was able to eat salt salmon & gravy for dinner. After the dishes were done we went down to call on Naptil & Arthur. Beautiful clear night after the rain. Mended John's socks, helped [illegible] [illegible], cleaned up pantry & refrigerator, wrote three letters and got to bed at 12:30 A.M. very weary in every bone, Called house and found mother comfortable. John has decided to go tomorrow to N.Y. E. Craftsbury - Heavenly day. APRIL 16 SATURDAY The blue jay woke me before 6:30 with his harsh cry outside my window and soon after I heard John going down to build the fire. We had a good breakfast and then rushed around to get ready to leave at 8:45 but were delayed by Ruth & Charles coming in so we did not get off until 9:40, A lovely day, all sunny and golden. Roads to M. very muddy & rough but after that fine so we got there at 11:15 and found Mother feeling better. John had a half- hour with her and then I took him to the train. He left feeling fairly well I think. I hated to have him go, I love him more than ever, if that could be, and I do so hope that he will be able to take whatever comes with courage and stick to his determinations to make a fresh start. It will not be easy but with god's help he can do it, I am confident. I feel very weary tonight and was glad to go to a nap but was waked by telephone, so finally gave up and went to see Dr. Perkins and then to market. Early to bed. APRIL 17 SUNDAY Easter Sunday - Cold and rainy. This morning Mother is stronger and feels more cheerful. I don't feel very fine but after Kate Wilcox came and we had the traditional Easter breakfast of ham & eggs and hot cross buns I felt better and, as Miss Bacon had already been to Mass, both Elspeth & I were able to go to church, James sent me the most beautiful roses that I about ever saw, a yellowish, pale pink, large and just fresh buds. The Easter music was nice and the sermon was "Live that ye may live," very good. It was pouring rain when we came out. Kate went to Shelburne but came back for dinner. Mother ate a good dinner. Miss Bacon took four of the roses to place on the altar in honor of her parents and left at 3:30 for the rest of the day. Mother and I have both had a nap. My thoughts are with John and Betty whom I hope and pray may be happy together today. The church sent Mother a pot of yellow tulips which pleased her very much indeed. Easter is a lovely season and people are so kind. APRIL 20 WEDNESDAY Rather gloomy, chill day. APRIL 21 THURSDAY Beautiful day bright with sun but windy. Went to Dr's this A.M. blood pressure only 104 but had intravenous iron etc. also vitamin B so felt better. Did not sleep well last night. Could not take Elspeth home today on account of a conference with Pres. Bailey at 2:00 Hope to go tomorrow. APRIL 22 FRIDAY Very hectic day - busy at office all morning, home to lunch then Elspeth and I set out for Craftsbury. It began to pour after we got to Maylo's where I stopped briefly to have a cup of tea & to telephone Mrs. Hanson. Finally got Mrs. Urie and left word I was there to bring her back. Then went over to East Hill, got keys and went in and cleaned up John's room and the bathroom and did a few other things before starting back. It poured all the way and I had to drive fast because I was afraid if I did not get home before 7:00 Mother would get hysterical I reached home at 6:45 just when I said I would be. Then, much to my surprise and theirs too. Very, very weary tonight. APRIL 23 SATURDAY Busy morning in office followed by errands and marketing. Got a special delivery letter from John which sounded quite cheerful APRIL 24 SUNDAY Beautiful day. I forgot it was the day to change to DST, so I was an hour behind schedule and consequently not ready when Miss Harris came to take me to church. Had a fine sermon. I invited Miss H. to come back for dinner and afterward we went for a ride and found lovely wild flowers which we brought home to Mother. Mrs. Davison and Alice were here when we came back. After they left I had to go over to Southwick to a YWCA installation meeting which was nice but hardly anyone was there. Called Mrs. Scott in N.Y. and she wants me to come down on Tuesday night for a Conference with Dr. Linderman on Wednesday. Do not know whether I can manage it or not. APRIL 25 MONDAY As usual I was weary and the office was hectic. Miss Bristol is out ill and Constans is in a flutter, not that I blame her for she has a lot to do, for this office anyway. Talked with Mr. Witters who says Mr. Branion has asked him to furnish me with travel requests to go to N-Y. tomorrow night. I have not yet dared to broach the plan to Mother but will wait to see how she is tomorrow. Prof. Butterfield brought my travel authorization back from Montpelier with him and I got a wire from Mr. Branion to come, which ought to make it possible for me to do so legitimately. In New York all day. APRIL 27 WEDNESDAY Woke up early after having had nothing but fevered cat naps all night. Went direct to Mrs. Scott's apt. where she, clad in a most becoming pale blue house coat, welcomed me with orange juice & coffee. We chatted a while then I called John & Betty & found them at home, arranged to go over there from the WPA Office this P.M. Had a shower & accompanied Lula Martin to Bonwit Teller's to look at new clothes then to meet Mr. Linderman for lunch. Ate at Gramercy Park Hotel - he evidently thought I would do if I can get a leave of absence. Back to WPA office I saw Edwina & Mr. Branion and helped draft a letter to Pres. Bailey about the leave. I feel very doubtful if he will do it but maybe he will. Then to 200 West 15th. John & Betty soon came home and it was a joy to see them. Both cheerful. James came for dinner and took me to the train. Slept pretty well APRIL 28 THURSDAY Woke up to a damp world. Slept much better than on the way down. Had a slow taxi up to the house and Mother was beginning to be in a frenzy when I got there. Very busy day at office and this evening a very long session at the Joint Conference when we discussed every thing including the prevalence of cheating on our campus. Home, weary to the bone at 10:30 and slept fitfully Found a letter from Mr. Merritt inquiring about John. Will answer it tomorrow. 7:30 Joint Conference at Southwick. APRIL 29 FRIDAY Hectic day. The Music Festival began to arrive today and we were very busy in the office all day I went downtown at noon to get a shoe shine and met Helen Anderson who came over this A.M. on what she calls a "monthly spree" She is staying over night and later came in to see Mother APRIL 30 SATURDAY 1:00 Mortar Board Luncheon Robinson Hall. Founders Day. Up early but before I had my dress on Fran Hennessey came to take me down to the Hotel Vermont for the Mortar Board breakfast. It was pouring and continued to pour almost all day. Home from that I had just time to get into my academic regalia and go over to the office before the procession formed. H. Perkins' address was nothing to rave about but it was rather interesting - a contrast between Benedict Arnold and Ira Allen. Home to change my dress again and rush downtown for oranges for Mother before going over to Robinson Hall to hostess at the Mortar Board luncheon which was Helen Nichol's best and a very pleasant occasion. Then I went to market and by dinner time I certainly was a weary woman Read a bit and went to bed with a sleeping tablet inside me MAY 1 SUNDAY M I was so weary this morning that I got up and made Mother's coffee and then retired, when Miss Bacon appeared, to my couch, where I stayed until after noon. Mother had a dress on and came out to the living room to eat both her dinner and supper. Miss Bacon went home after the dishes were done and I have written to John, James, Elspeth and Mrs. Hanson and have finished the letter to Mr. Merritt which I should have written Friday. at Mother's behest and feeling that I really am not up to the long drive to Bellows Falls, I called Catherine and she will arrange to have me go at a later date. That is a great relief to me for I'm all in today and the prospect of that drive is a burden to contemplate. I have not been out of doors today and I feel stuffy both in mind & body. MAY 2 MONDAY Woke up feeling particularly rotten and very glad indeed that I do not have to go to Bellows Falls this P.M. Very busy day at the office and unpleasant too, as Jean Soule was reported by Miss Cummings as having cheated on the Hygiene exams. I had an interview, not too satisfactory with her after dinner, over at Southwick. I'm not at all sure whether she is sorry for having cheated or is sorry that she was caught. MAY 3 TUESDAY Feeling more rotten than ever today. 9:00 May 3rd Assembly at Bellows Falls High School. Beautiful day - bright sunshine and everything growing green and lovely on the campus. Dr. Katherine gone for a month so I cannot have any more iron treatments for the present. Mother sat out on Miss Storms porch today for five minutes but it was too cold for her. MAY 4 WEDNESDAY Another beautiful day. Feel not quite so all in as yesterday but not very fine. Will try to see Dr. Eastman next week. Had busy afternoon at Southwick Did not have a letter from John today. MAY 5 THURSDAY Very busy day as I had lots of work this morning and this P.M. I drove to Montpelier to attend the meeting of Commissioner Dale's Advisory Committee which met at the State House at 2:00. Saw Margaret Paterson for a moment on the stairs. Did not have time to 12:00 Public Welfare Dept. Montpelier. drive up to see Mrs. Harvey. Very weary when I got home. Alice was here and just leaving when I arrived. I had just time to get washed & dressed to go to the Essex Jct banquet. Felt rotten and could barely last through the long wait before we sat down. Very nice affair & good program. Mrs. Lawton came for me and Mrs Mudgett brought me home & they sent flowers to Mother. 6:30 Essex Junction Mother's & Daughter's banquet. MAY 6 FRIDAY Rained; James came from Florida Miss and was here for breakfast and took car down to get gas before Miss H. & I left for Montpelier for the Forum Conference at the State House at which Dr. Studebaker from U.S. Dept. of Education spoke. Had lunch at Tavern and attended P.M. session, then home. Stopped on way to get some bluets and in getting over fence tore both myself & my new hose on the barbed wire, besides getting my feet wet, but did get a pretty bunch of bluets which I brought home to Mother and will take to East Hill when I go to set out in the rock garden. MAY 8 SUNDAY Mother's Day and I went to Church with one of Mother's flowers which Miss Bacon gave her, on my front. Had a very nice service and good music. John & Betty telephoned at 1:00 and it was such a joy to talk with them both and hear good reposrts of them. MAY 10 TUESDAY 4:00 Ladies of Faculty Tea 4 - 6:00 Poured at the tea from 4 - 5 and then, with Marianna Palmer, drove to Middlebury. Rained and I was tired 6:00 Middlebury - Mother's & Daughters Banquet Had nice supper and good crowd but I did not feel satisfied with my part of it so cut down my charge to $5.00. Home about 10:30 very tired. MAY 13 FRIDAY Cold, rainy day and I seem to have lost both of my umbrella's, my own and Mother's. Went down after lunch to get some flowers for Aunt Kate and came home early to take Mother down to the train to meet her. Jean came down with Kenneth also to meet her. She looked very thin but otherwise well except that she was nearly frozen from having no heat in the train. They went straight home to East Hill. Had fine letter from John to Mother today which seemed cheerful and Aunt Kate reported that Jones had seen him and 5:00 Social Calendar meeting. thought he looked much better. I am so thankful. MAY 14 SATURDAY Still rather wet and dreary out it cleared this P.M. and seemed warmer. James telephoned from Springfield that he was coming this P.M. He arrived at 4:00 in his new car and was here for dinner. I sent Miss Bacon home after lunch and I got dinner - baked ham & strawberry shortcake - very good. Had my car checked today and got Chevrolet Contest blanks so we worked on those this evening. Fletcher Farms meeting at Rutland. MAY 15 SUNDAY Poured all day long - damp & cold. Up early and got breakfast for James Miss Bacon ill so was late & I went after her. We left at nine-fifteen for Rutland in James' new Lincoln-Zepher car which is very comfortable and very speedy. Was a bit late for the Fletcher Farm Executive Committee but had plenty of it. Did not stay to eat lunch with them but James and I had a very good chicken dinner at Howes Coffee Shop and afterward I went in to see Mrs. Gary & Marion for a few minutes, then we drove home at a leisurely pace. Mother not feeling very well today - got too tired yesterday and the place was not warm enough. James took Harriet & Stewart out for supper so Mother and I had ours alone as Miss B. went home at 4:00 PM. Quiet evening, James decided not to go home tonight as it was pouring rain. He slept on the living room davenport. I wrote Mrs. Hanson and he will deliver it. MAY 16 MONDAY Cold and rainy still. 6:00 Student MAY 22 SUNDAY Up early and was back in Burlington by 11:30. Feeling terribly lame in all joints and completely all in generally. Too much weeding I guess. Laid around all day and evening. MAY 23 MONDAY Still lame and very tired. MAY 25 WEDNESDAY Margaret Thompson graduated from the M.F hospital training school today. Jean & Arline Daniels came down to attend the exercise but I had already accepted Mrs. Whitney's invitation to Twist-o-Hill tonight so I could not go to the exercises altho' I did hope to get back in time to look in on the reception. I went with the Groat's & Butterfield's and as they played bridge and I didn't I came home with the Metcalf's & Bennets bu it was 10:00 before we left and I was so weary that I did not like to get the car out & go downtown. Jean had been in to see Mother on her way. I had a nice time at the Whitney party but I find that much extra effort a burden as I feel now. If I can only get through to the end of college I'm surely going to do something to make myself feel better. MAY 28 SATURDAY Would have liked to drive home today as it was lovely and warm out of doors but I had a lot to do here and also had to go to Constans tea at 4:30. Nina called up this A.M. to ask me to go with Robert and her to dinner and the moore's tonight. MAY 29 SUNDAY Cooler and rainy. Packed and drove home this A.M. mother and Miss Bacon, plus boxes, bags, plants, clothing and groceries. Arrived to find Mrs. Hanson away and house locked but a fire was going so we soon were in and had dinner started. Mother was quite tired but stood the trip much better than I expected. It was cloudy and cheerless all afternoon and I think she thought longingly of her sunny room at 61 No. Prospect St. but she had many callers and finally got to bed in her own room and slept well. Miss Bacon seems contented and I hope she will work out all right. Mrs. Hanson came after I had gone to bed, she had been at home for the day. I made muffins and got dinner with few supplies I had brought. Memorial Day. MAY 30 MONDAY Woke up feeling very lame and tired but it was a beautiful day all sunshine and bird songs so I got up quickly and was out to pick flowers for the cemtery [cemetery] Mother was fairly tired so she stayed in bed all morning and got up just as Aunt Kate came in to call on her. Jean & Bunny went to the services at the common but I did not go. Charles came and washed the car, I weeded and dug dandelion greens for dinner and in the P.M. took Mrs. Mc Laren & Miss Bacon with me to the cemetery where we fixed lovely flowers, forget-me-nots and lillies of the valley. Saw Harley and Lee Cowles then & later Harley and Mr. Hale came to call, also Leslie Sanders and his small daughter. Mary Bailey came to say "goodbye" as she starts for Hawaii this week Fri. Dora came this eve. Very lovely here MAY 31 TUESDAY Woke up late after restless night as I could not find any comfortable place to sleep - side sore and arm & shoulder very lame. Got breakfast and did the dishes and went to the office: busy day and I have very little pep - wonder if Jean got through the next two weeks. Went to P.O. to return white dress to L. & T. got medicine and fruit - home to lunch, and back to work Feel rotten- Got dinner and went to library afterward for an hour, then downtown and home: called Mother who said she was feeling fine & had been out into the garden and around the house. JUNE 1 WEDNESDAY I was waked up early by the telephone this morning and when I got there it was Helen Utton. I was, to say the least, much angered and told her so I hung up. It kept ringing for some time but I did not heed. JUNE 3 FRIDAY Beautiful day but I did not have much pep to enjoy it. JUNE 11 SATURDAY Alumni Day Twenty-fifth Reunion. Alumni Luncheon etc. JUNE 12 SUNDAY 1:00 Reunion Luncheon - Underhill JULY 2 SATURDAY 8:00 Was very busy this morning JULY 3 SUNDAY Dark, dreary day. I woke up weary and not much interested in going to church but did so and enjoyed it as I always do. Intended to go up & call on Ella Howard but it was too cold & wet for mother to go out. Went down to see Phoebe & Mary Murphy - who were very entertaining Also went to C.E. tonight and enjoyed that altho I feel that the worship element has almost entirely disappeared from the meeting, which is a pity. Afterwards we had a birthday cake & ice cream as Jean's treat in honor of Lucile's birthday. JULY 4 MONDAY Very cold raw day so we had a fire in the furnace. I was busy all day doing odd jobs and mending, ironing, etc. Miss Bacon by spells in a gloom but I do not pay any attention to her. I wish I could find someone with a better disposition who was not so wrapped up in her own feelings, health, affairs, etc. I suspect she is not very pleasant to Mother when I am away. I gathered a bouquet of late peonies and roses for Aunt Kate and took them down late this P.M. Had a nice chat there and stopped to leave some sun preserves for Phoebe on my way home. An early supper and then I drove back to Burlington in 1 1/2 hours. Traffic not bad, but I found when I got here that I was very tired back ached and I slept badly. Com. & Mrs. Bailey & their small son called. $1.70 dinner 1.50 + 20 JULY 5 TUESDAY Very busy day. Registration began in the gym at 9:00 and Constans and I were still there at 6:45 P.M. We took in about $2700 for rooms and laundry. A mob milled about all day. In the P.M. we served punch & cookies to the crowd. At 5:00 we closed registrations but had to work on balancing the cash, entering checks etc. I also had several appointments at the office. Took Constans down town to dinner at the Park Cafe, after which we both felt revived and came home to read & write until bed time. Warmer 50¢ JULY 6 WEDNESDAY Registration continued all day and we now have about 750 enrolled. CAW not to come until July 11. As she is tired. I shall be glad to see her. Its lonely here by myself. Did not go to grossmount for dinner as I had planned because I got a flat fire just as I was starting so I had to call the garage and have a man come to fix it. A great 3-cornered tear in tire and tube was the cause. Don't know how I did it but may have cut it on a curb which I hit as I was starting. Went to Coggins for supper- Very poor service - never did get my vegetables and waitress disappeared Very tired tonight no word from John or Betty yet since I sent the checks. 1.50 for 3 dinners JULY 7 THURSDAY Very busy today in the office and getting ready for the big reception tonight. Went back and forth to Southwick several times. The new punch bowls and cups came on the 2:15 train and are very nice. There was a mob at the reception and we stood in line a full hour shaking hands. My feet rebelled but I managed to last thro the ordeal and rested them during the concert. We stayed until about 11:15 then Lola and I came home to bed. I think the affair was a success. I took Velma Lawlor & Yola to dinner at Grassmount tonight as I had no time nor energy to get dinner here - also no supplies on hand. We had a very nice dinner there. Helen's punch was delicious at the party and the girls played nicely. Warm & Muggy. JULY 8 FRIDAY The weather changed today and grew rapidly warmer, also very muggy and uncomfortable. Got up and pre- pared breakfast for Yola & myself did dishes & beds and went to work. Very busy day. Finished Mr. Butterfield's NYC report and prepared plans for evening meeting on the House Directors at Southwick. Did not go to Grassmount for dinner tonight but after taking Yola home I came back, made a chicken salad and had my supper here. No letter from John today. I wrote him this noon and sent it air mail. Called home tonight and mother had no letter this week either. I hope nothing is wrong. Had a good meeting at Southwick, came home, read "On Borrowed Time," a fantastic but very interesing story and went to bed at 11:30, but slept badly owing to close air & backache. JULY 9 SATURDAY Woke up after restless night so lame that even a very hot bath failed to unlimber me. Think I must be getting poison from some source. Did not go early to the office as I was feeling a bit low. Busy until noon and suddenly remembered the meeting of the Trustees of Goddard which was called for 1:30 at Morrill Hall so I had my lunch, packed my things and went over to the meeting. We had quite a time getting a quorum of six and finally had to call Healey Wilson and Mr. Hooper on the telephone. Finally at five-fifteen I just had to leave as I knew mother would be worrying about me. Got home at 6:30 S.T. in time for supper, rather weary. Myrtie Finn had been ill all day so Miss Bacon was down there. Later she & Mrs. Hanson went to Hardwick in my car to the movies Guy and Earle going too. Mother & I spent JULY 10 SUNDAY a quiet evening and I was very glad to get to bed. Still sticky and warm Sunday morning. I fixed a lovely basket of white phlox and blue delphiniums for the church. Dr. Lukins preached on "The Healing Force of God," rather a remarkable and unusual sermon. A large crowd were there. We went over to Jean's for lunch. Where Judge & Mrs. Stafford, Mr & Mrs. Mueller, & Renee and Phoebe & Mary Murphy were the other guests. Had a delicious luncheon & nice time. Mother got pretty tired but I don't think it hurt her, in-fact it probably will do her good. The C.E. was to be on Patmos Peake and had I not promised to bring Yola Tamburri back tonight I would have waited and come back early in the morning as I would have enjoyed going to the Peake for the meeting. Found that I was very tired when I got home. Discovered that I had left the sweet peas which I brought for mother & the celery in the bathtub & refrigerator respectively. JULY 11 MONDAY Woke up after a not too restful night, very weary and not very enthusiastic about going to work but did so promptly and soon CAW arrived I was awfully glad to see her and as soon as she was registered she went over and "settled in" as it were. Mrs. Kennan's Party JULY 14 THURSDAY Warm, rather muggy day which ended with a thunderstorm mixed up with a lovely sunset just after I arrived at Mrs. Kennan's for the party which she gave in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Hillegas. It was a buffet affair and we had a delicious supper - Southern dishes - and did various guessing games afterwards. Much to my surprise, I won a first prize - a pretty little pitcher of Mexican glass. It had stopped raining and was nice when I came home at 11:30 CAW went to Ruggles for supper the guest of Margaret Jones. I visited two dormitories today and planned with Miss Nichols about the buffet supper for the House Directors on Friday the 22nd which we plan to have at Southwick. JULY 18 MONDAY I celebrated by getting up at 6:00, snatching a hasty breakfast and with a brief glance at my birthday packages I left for Burlington. Very warm here but bright and a good breeze. Busy day in the midst of which Pierre Zwick called to bring me a birthday gift from my girls in the WPA office at Montpelier - in which he shared. a pressed silver, handmade brooch which I wore on my pink emboidered dress to the Faculty Dinner. James sent me a book which came today and both Miss B. & Mrs. H. tucked packages into my bag. Miss Holden gave me a vase full of lovely flowers. The Faculty JULY 22 FRIDAY Hot and sticky today and I woke with twinges in my joints and a flattened feeling. Have rushed around all day, doing this and that, getting groceries, making a fish dish for tonight, having discovered that Miss Miss Nulty & Calhoun will be at the party. Had to rob the roadsides to get flowers; made two trips downtown and five to Southwick to set tables, arrange flowers etc, then back home to make punch, get last- minute gadgets and then to the supper. It went off very nicely and everyone seemed to have a good time. We got home about 11:00 with the car loaded with soiled table linen, wilted flowers, warm punch and tired women. Another social milestone passed and so to bed. 7:00 Buffet supper for House Directors. Very warm. JULY 26 TUESDAY Cooler & rainy. AUGUST 11 THURSDAY Woke up to AUGUST 26 FRIDAY 11:00 D.S.T. Fletcher Farm Board at Proctorsville. SEPTEMBER 3 SATURDAY Left early for Burlington and found Miss Harris & Mrs. Underwood waiting for me. Saw Pres. Hobly [Hobby] Show as good, also the Garden Club exhibits and Miss Burwash and Miss Rawson's room arrangment exhibits. Sophomore aides functioned very well. Tonight I had dinner at Miss Muse's apt. Very nice time and delicious dinner. Played anagrams afterward. Helen Nichols & Lydia Tarrant other guests. NOVEMBER 12 SATURDAY Beautiful weather continued today and I was up early because the door- bell woke me about 6:00 when Martha Dill came having had a chance to ride down with her sister-in-law to Essex Jct and came over on the bus. I went to the office for an hour but spent most of the day at the "Our Town" conference at Southwick. We had a fairly good program this P.M. but I ws too weary to be anything but relieved when it was over. Came home and went down town to do the Saturday marketing After dinner Alice & I played anagrams for an hour. NOVEMBER 13 SUNDAY First cloudy, rainy day this month. Martha had to go back today so I drove her to Essex Jct. to meet her family. Did not go to church until this P.M. when Elspeth and I went to hear Dr. Luccock from Yale at the Vesper Service. He was very good, but the rain or just inertia kept people away so the audience was smaller than it should have been. I am tired today and glad to be quiet Snow tonight NOVEMBER 15 TUESDAY 7:30 Concert at Memorial Auditorium. First snow storm of season. NOVEMBER 16 WEDNESDAY Very busy day. Expected to go to Buffalo today but got a wire at noon yesterday that meeting of alumni is postponed so have written John and James not to expect me. NOVEMBER 20 SUNDAY Beautiful, clear, cold day. I was up early and about 8:30 drove over for Stewart and we went home thro' a beautiful country the trees lightly powdered with new snow of which there was much more as we neared home Delivered Christmas gifts to Casa Mia, and got key, there joined Jean and went to church. The room was so hot that I could hardly keep awake. Walked home and went into the house to pack up a few things which I had forgotten last time. Dora, Noonie, Charlie & Father Cray came to dinner Had turkey with all fixin's and I ate too much. Aunt Kate gave me an antique three-legged table for my Xmas which I brought back with me. Got here about six and realized that I was very tired indeed. Took Stewart down to see Prof Wilmarth. NOVEMBER 21 MONDAY Usual Monday - hectic First real snow storm of year. NOVEMBER 23 WEDNESDAY The long expected snow came today a few vagrant flakes all morning and after noon a real-old fashioned snowfall which lasted until evening. The streets were slippery so I got away from the office early and went down to do the marketing before dark. Went to have a second shot of cold serum and to Dr. Uptons to get Mother's tablets, to bookstore for two books to read over tomorrow and then came home and put the car in with real relief. This evening Mother and I played anagrams and she won. Elspeth left at 2:00 with Marjorie Perrin and the Dustan girls. She will come back Friday. no letter from John yet this week. I'm weary tonight. Got a very simple dinner. NOVEMBER 24 THURSDAY We woke up this morning to find the city blanketed with snow. In fact, I was awakened by the bell on the old white horse that draws the U-shaped snow plough with which Burlington cleans its sidewalks. We have had a quiet and very pleasant day. Mother got up to have breakfast with me and while I did dishes and put shelf edging on the kitchen cupboard shelves she rested and got dressed. The highlight of the day was a call from John in N.Y. We talked with both John and Betty. She had been to church and they were soon going out to get some dinner. J. has been having trouble with his stomach but is better. They both reported cheerful news of his work and say that they are now paying debts and getting on an even keel again for that we are thankful as for nothing else. I cooked a stew for dinner and have also written letters and the invitations for the Boulder-Mortar Board dinner. Coldest day since Mar. 11. NOVEMBER 25 FRIDAY Woke up to a cold world - nearly zero, with a strong north wind blowing. I did not go out this forenoon but this P.M. I did go to the office. H. French gave me a lift from the corner and I did not realize how cold it was until I came home with the wind in my face and I was thoroughly chilled before I got here. I prepared dinner and Elspeth came on bus at 7:00. She had been cold ever since she left here on Wednesday and found the trip down very chilly. I feel rotten tonight and altho I have planned a lot of things to finish this week-end, so far I have not accomplished much of it. I am lame and stiff today, from getting chilled yesterday possibly. Apartment not very warm today. NOVEMBER 26 SATURDAY Cold today but not so cold as yesterday. Feeling not too good. Ordered groceries by telephone so I would not have to go to Colodny's. Did go down to Church St. & stopped to get my new blue dress which looks very well. Got two books & took Constans whom I met, home with her parcels This P.M. saw Helen Park for two hours and went to hospital to call on Yola who is better. Miss Davis had to have her leg operated on - bones were slipping by. Feeling very low and went to bed early. NOVEMBER 27 SUNDAY Not feeling at all well today so spent a very quiet day only going up to the post box about 5:00 P.M. On way back I stopped in for a minute to see Jennie Bradlee and Mrs. Coyle. Intended to go up to take a jar of jam to Miss Eddy but she was not there. Joe and Charlotte Carrigan were at Jennie's. They are leaving for New Orleans next week on a business and vacation trip combined. Wrote to Ruth Chalmers and to James - back aches and feel very queer - Elspeth went to church. We listened to a radio sermon which was good but a rather poor substitute for church. NOVEMBER 28 MONDAY Warmer today but I felt so rotten that it was hard work getting under way. Went down town this A.M. with Miss Harris to select a table for Campus House hallway: home for lunch and then to Dr. Lawlor's for cold serum Feeling so badly that I went in to see Dr. Katherine on my way back. She found blood pressure 100 and gave me intraveneous of iron etc. also another hypo of liver. Strapped my back which feels some better tonight. Miss Nichols gave us a lovely dinner after which we went over to Southwick for coffee in front of the fire place and then had games, [illegible] [illegible], etc until 11:30 at which time party broke up and I came wearily home to sleep well for the first time for a week. The Boulder & Mortar Board Crowd sent me a lovely white corsage to wear and all had a nice time. DECEMBER 9 FRIDAY Very busy day until noon and this P.M. I did some errands and then went over to Southwick at 3:00 to help with the YWCA party for the Rock Point girls of whom there were fifty three. Forgot entirely about going to Klifa Club for Katherine Hagar's tea which annoyed me as I really wanted to go. Heavy fog tonight. I took a load of girls back to Rock Point had supper and then went with the French's and Butterfields to the Dartmouth-Vermont basket ball game which was very exciting 4:00 - 5:00 Mrs. Hagar Klifa Club Mrs. Middlebrook We won by one score by a shot from the floor in the last second of play 37-36. Great crowd, band, noise etc. Took Mrs. Bailey home and had a call at Lucy's with cookies and ginger ale afterwards. DECEMBER 10 SATURDAY Poured all night and was still raining when I went to the office this A.M. changed to very wet snow before noon and my car was nearly buried when I came out to come home at 12:30 We went to market right after lunch and then I spent the balance of the P.M. doing up Christmas presents so that some of that task will be off my mind. Still very wet & slushy out so I stayed home and read & ordered more Xmas presents this evening. DECEMBER 11 SUNDAY Bleak, gloomy day but the snow has mostly disappeared. Think had it not been for serums I might have had the cold which would naturally follow getting my feet wet yesterday. As it was I have only a few more lame places and feel a bit low generally. Did not go to morning church but Elspeth and I went to the Christmas Concert and music service at the college chapel which was very nice. DECEMBER 24 SATURDAY I woke up very early but went back to sleep and it was 7:00 before I got up so I telephoned the Van Ness, thinking that John & Betty would be there but found the train was late so I hurried down and even then had to wait twenty minutes but then it came with James also on board, so we came up here for breakfast which Elspeth did not have ready when we got here, so I had to help get it onto the table, which was finally accomplished John & Betty are both looking much better and much happier than when I saw them last April and James is fine, as usual. We went for a drive in the P.M. over to Southwick, down by the lake and out by Spear St. to see the Mts. but it was too hazy. The sky was overcast with grey clouds. Back for lunch and then Elspeth left on the bus. Mother got very tired so could not open her gift but we did. Lovely Christmas Day. DECEMBER 25 SUNDAY I woke up to sunshine this A.M. and remembering that I was the cook I got up straightway and made muffins and prepared breakfast for the family who aarrived about 9:00. Mother was too weary to get up for breakfast so she had hers in bed. As soon as we finished clearing up from breakfast, James, John & Betty left for church and I tackled the turkey which looked as big as a condor when I finally got it out of its wrappings. I stuffed and stuffed before it was full but finally got it done and into the oven just at noon. From then on it was a continual performance of basting the thing because it was so huge that I could not get the cover on the roaster. I helped mother get dressed and then the family came home from church and we opened some more presents and enjoyed the flowers which James had bro't for Mother and Betty and me, and then it was DECEMBER 26 MONDAY time for me to finish getting the dinner which we sat down to at 3:30. The turkey was done to a turn and with him we had wild rice, corn baby lima beans, riced potato, cran- berry jelly, celery, pickles, etc with Christmas cookies and Christmas ice cream for dessert. Everyone appeared to enjoy the food and we sat around in the l.r. over our coffee until twilight fell. Then James went out to make some calls and Betty helped me with the dishes. Mother and John had such a good visit and I rejoiced to see them together again and John not pacing the floor. We lighted the tree and listened to the radio until it was time for them to go to their train I drove them down and it was already turning colder, a foretaste of the rest of the week. I came home staggering with weariness but, O so thankful for a DECEMBER 27 TUESDAY Christmas like this after the travesty of two years ago and the disappointment of last year and many other times. It was truly the happiest Christmas I have spent in ten years I think, and the only shadow was my own weariness, or rather the consciousness that I am not well, or not as well as I should be and need to be to do what my position demands. I went to bed and slept the best I have for weeks but woke up with a sore feeling as if all my bones were tired. I managed to wash up the kitchen including the stove, which was covered with grease, and get the table linen washed, etc. but by noon I was a wreck so after lunch or about 3:00 I lay down on the couch and fell asleep. I woke up with a headache and feeling rotten but just before supper Elspeth arrived, a day sooner than I expected and was she welcome. DECEMBER 30 FRIDAY Today I had set for getting some more Christmas notes off in the A.M. and making some of the many calls which I owe. but first I went to the office for a while to sign letters, then to Dr. McSweeney's to have b.P. taken Only 105 - and get liver shots, then to the hospital to see Joyce Bates who is recovering and after that home to get dressed and make calls. Mrs. Tupper & Mrs. Butterfield were neither one at home Mrs. Groat was having tea by the fire with Mrs. Whiting, Mrs. Slocum and Mrs. Eckhard so I stayed and joined them and from there went to see Mrs. Ward. I found Anna there and we had a nice chat about old times. Home for dinner and as we were eating Isabel came to stay until Sunday night. Nice day but cold. DECEMBER 31 SATURDAY Not feeling very good today. Took down Christmas tree and cleaned up the needles, etc in all the rooms this morning. Catherine Wilcox came about noon and had lunch and a nice visit with us. At three she and I went down to Judge Darling's reception for a few minutes, long enough to have a glass of New Year's punch and some other samples of the refreshments which he had ready for his legal confreres who came at foure [four]. From there I went to market and waited in vain for my nice clerk, who was out of sight in the meat cutting room, so finally I took the next best one and after an hour's time, got my things & came home. That left time for just one call which I made on Mrs. Kennan where I had another kind of punch and really a very pleasant time. Home to dinner. "My day" has been full.
