Bleak, dreary, rainy day.
We put up curtains,
said "Happy New Year" to
friends over the telephone,
washed, cooked and
took a nap. The radio
refused to work so we
read instead. Mother
better.

Back to the office for the
first time since Dec.
15. Very much colder today
with strong wind. Have
cold so went to see
Dr. Breeding who helped
me wonderfully. Mother
sat up for supper
tonight.

went to N. Y. Ave to church and
we stayed home and listened in
to Dr. Sizoo over the radio. I got
the dinner and in the P.M.
Ruth came and took me to ride
around the speedway but it was
too cold. She came back for
supper - pleasant evening.

Finally got my ticket
for the W.H. reception at
Mrs. Dale's, where it had
been sent by error. Stopped
for a little chat with Mrs.
Dale. Bought myself a string
of crystal beads & some
ear drops today, very extra-
vagant but I felt the need.

Busy day at office
but were through early
so I was home for dinner
and made a leisurely toilet
drove over to the Club for
Ruth & went to the White
House at 9:30. Terrible ride
and I did not enjoy so much
being a mere one of them. Liked
better going with Mrs. Dale.

"evening out", having been staying
at home so much of late.
Mr. Bryant called today
but I was out. Had lunch
with Ruth & Miriam.
Mother and Thelma both

on democracy breaking
down in answer to Will
Durant's January article. Wish
I had any "pep" either mental
or physical, beyond that nec-
essary for living, so that I
could do things like that.
I shall try anyway.

Very clear & cold today. Thelma
ill so I busied myself all
morning with household
matters. Ruth & Miss Jenkins
came & took me to ride
but it grew cold so rapidly
that we were glad to come
home for a cup of tea.
Quiet pleasant evening.

Home at six to dress for Cause &
Cure of War dinner. Very good
food & Dr. Fosdick was fine but
Dr. Lindeman, as usual, was
a maze of psychological terms.
Meeting nearly broken up by
two women from N.Y. representing the
Anti-Imperialist League.

has more cold. Thelma coughed & I
was awake sympathizing with
the rest of the family. Busy day
at the office. Tonight I went down
to the C. & C. conference session
which was in the nature of an informal
round-table discussion. Very interesting
but lasted too long.

Feeling rotten today. Tiresome
day at the office. Fought to send all
my bills down and had to go up
to the Capital at 10 P.M. to get them
Tired and spent evening reading
and listening to the radio. Gov.
Smith spoke; he must be the
world's most concecited [conceited] man, next
to Mussolini.

meeting: Late at office so I
had barely time to dress & get
to the Hotel for the meeting. I knew
neither the words, tune nor steps [o]f the
"Floradora" but my red wig made
up for that & it was all a great
success, so they said. Thelma
went too & enjoyed it.

taxi to the Club where I

to Mrs. D's tea - a very nice
affair. I was cold & had

Mother ill with a cold today
so I called Dr. Miner. I walked
nearly all the way to the office
this A.M. Came home for lunch and
walked all the way back. Very
busy afternoon with reports
etc. walked over to the drug store
& stopped to see Mrs. Dale but she was

Crowds and rain and
excitement, I had a good
seat, thanks to Senator Dale,
but only stayed a little while
because of the wet. Home all

Very warm - about 92°.
It was so warm this morning
that living was a burden. I
finished packing and had
a nap. Ruth came for supper
and we left for the train at
9:00. Like a furnace on the
train and I slept but little
Had frightful backache also.
Hate hot weather.
MON.

Woke up to a very warm
day. Stopped at Atlanta
for a half-hour so we got out
and got a breath of air. Found
a Congressional delegation going
to a funeral in Louisania [Louisiana]
on board, Senator Frazier and
Mr. McGraine among them.
Have met several very interesting

met a nice Theta from
Charlotte, N.C., Arrived in
new Orleans early this A.M.
and found a very cool, comfortable
room awaiting us at the Roosevelt.
It rained all morning and we were
busy registering so we did not go out.

and late getting away. Dressed
in my new yellow dress, drove in a
taxi to the Cairo Hotel where met
Mr. Gibson and Dales and they took
me to the Hamilton for dinner and
afterwards to see "Showboat,"
which was very good indeed.

Stupid day. Went home for lunch &
planned to go to St. Albans for tea. but
the Senate went into Executive
session and stayed until nearly
six. Very tired tonight so after
dinner I went promptly to
bed.

at last. Today went to Jean's for
dinner & spent P.M. packing my
trunk and left for Montpelier

before I had my hat off. He came

To the train at ten-thirty but it
was too hot to go on. Very warm

trunks and getting washing
& sewing duties out of the

Did not go to the office today
until afternoon. Finished packing
and was ready to move at 9:30
when trunk came. The apt. at 208
was not ready but they were
getting it straightened out as fast
as possible. The furniture came &
I am in, at least, if not settled.

to settle down for the
winter. I have hauled the
furniture around so much

for three days. Feel a great de-
pression and lassitude
tonight. Slept badly last
night. Found Dr. Miner's
cold medicine and have taken
a good dose so hope to feel better

& Mrs. Mowbray to lunch &
I spent the morning getting the place
neat & the food ready. They came
late & the dinner was not so good
as it would have been earlier
but we had a good time. Wrote home
& walked to station to mail it.

Premier McDonald spoke to the
Senate today and thanks to senator
Dale's thotfulness I heard him. He
is a great man and his visit
ought to do much for the cause
of international understanding.
Home to a lovely supper tonight
