- Date Created: 1942-01-12
- Description: January 12, 1942. Hayward Street Improvements: This view shows Hayward Street looking north from the intersection of Catherine Street. The old curbs and gutters have been removed and broken up for use as telford base. A 6" drain tile has been installed on either side of the street three fee below grade of top of curb and one foot back of curb. The drainage trench has been backfilled with crushed stone to within one foot of the surface. Tar paper has been spread over the crushed stone before backfilling the remainder of the trench to prevent dirt from filtering down into the stone drain. A 6" sand cushion has been placed over the clay sub-base and an 8" telford stone base has been placed by hand on the sand cushion as seen in the foreground. On this telford course has been spread approximately two inches of 1 1/2" stone which will later be given a penetration of asphalt binder. The power shovel and crane with drop hammer can be seen in the distance excavating the old pavement and sub-base at the intersection of Howard Street. Two new catch basins were constructed at the intersection of Catherine Street to replace the two old ones. More information can be found at the UVM web site Historic Burlington Project, Burlington, Vermont (South of Pearl Street photographs from 1930s 1940s).

- Description: December 11, 1945. City of Burlington, Vermont, Street Department. Lakeside Ave. Pavement Base Construction. This view was taken from a point near the intersection of Conger Ave. looking westerly towards the lake. Note that the temporary wearing surface had been constructed for the base after the work of mixing and stabilizing the base had been completed as shown in the picture under date Dec. 5, 1945. This stage of construction was done to enable the street to be used during the winter and early spring without experiencing the troubles of early spring break-up of the old dirt and cinder street. The pavement will be completed in the summer of 1946. Note the crushed stone base placed in the driveway after regrading to meet new grades.
