Original caption reads: Briggs St. Street Improvements, pavement construction Looking south from intersection of Flynn Ave. This view shows the street after excavation work had been completed with power shovel to a depth to allow a 3 inch sand cushion with 8 inch telford stone base and 2 inch penetration binder course with a 2 inch wearing course of asphalt penetration. Note the stone base being constructed in the background at the intersection of Ferguson Ave., also sewer connection being installed from manhole on Ferguson Ave., to new addition being built at the south end of the Vermont Structural Steel Corp. Plant.

Description: Workmen are spreading asphalt on a portion of Center Street (also once called Catlins Lane) in Burlington probably in the 1920s. Steamroller can be seen to the right ready to tamp the pavement. Buildings seen include 191-195 Bank Street on the left, 207 Bank Street on right, 196 Bank to the mid-left. View is looking down Center St. toward Bank Street. The mansard-roof building to the right of center has been replaced by a parking garage. McAllister's embossed name seen in lower right. Description: Feb. 26, 1938 dated photo. East Avenue from near Colchester Avenue looking South, WPA (Work Projects Administration) Project No. 65-12-336. This view shows the widening project carried on during the winter months. This street was widened to a total width of thirty feet and a slope of 1 -1 1/2 was given to the shoulders. The old power line was reconstructed with new poles and fixtures and placed in a position to allow for future development. Another project is being prepared for future development of a new pavement and further widening at the south end of this street.

Description: Photograph dated Nov. 21, 1940. Original caption reads: WPA (Work Projects Administration) Project No. 665-12-1-38 This view is taken from a point exactly on the City limits on Grove Street looking in a north-westerly direction. The pavement area as far as shown in this view is only a temporary surface. No telford base or penetration surface having been constructed for the last 1,000 feet because the project for the sewer and water mains was not continued to the City limits as originally intended. All grading was done, however, and a corrugated metal culvert with concrete headers and catch basins was constructed in the ravine as shown by the location of white guard posts in the center of this picture.

Burlington Streets: Intervale

Description: August 15, 1939 PWA Project Vt. 1097-F, Intersection of Intervale Avenue, Elmwood Avenue and North Street. This view shows the broad intersection of the three above streets after the completion of the Plant-Mix asphalt pavement consisting of a leveling course averaging approximately one and one-half inches in thickness and a wearing course of two inches in thickness. The leveling course was constructed with coarse aggregate or "Binder" material with 50-60 penetration asphalt cement. The wearing surface was constructed with fine aggregate using a mixture of 50-60 penetration asphalt cement and American Bitumuls tempering fluid.

Description: June 29, 1946. Burlington Street Department - Burlington, Vermont. Intervale Road - Asphalt Stabilized base and Armor Coat Wearing Surface. This view taken from the intersection of Riverside Ave. looking northerly toward the railroad track shows the mixing process while constructing the stabilized base using asphalt emulsion (XRM) as a binder. The materials used for aggregate on this job was road gravel hauled from the Lunderville Pit in the town of Williston last October (1945) and spread approximately 28 feet in width over the entire section from Riverside Ave. to the railroad crossing, a distance of approximately 875 feet. Note the Allis-Chalmers Power Grader mixing the gravel after the asphalt emulsion had been applied by pressure distributor. The Armor Coat Wearing surface was constructed directly after the stabilized base had been completed. This is a very economical type of paving, especially where a cheaper grade of materials can be used and the location does not demand a higher type of pavement.

Burlington Streets: Lakeside Ave

Description: August 3, 1944. This view taken from the easterly side of Pine St. at the intersection of Lakeside Ave. shows the old 18 foot concrete pavement as it appeared on Aug. 3, 1944, before construction work began. The pole line on the left side of the pavement had just been reset to clear the center line of the pavement a distance of 26 feet, allowing for the proposed 12 foot shoulder. Note the stone monument in the foreground which marks the intersection of the center line of Pine St. and the center line of Lakeside Ave. This monument will be reset with a lamphole frame and cover for protection during construction work. Note Bell Aircraft employees cars parked in parking lot on left, also railroad underpass in back ground which is approximate westerly end of project.
