Hayward Street Improvements: This view shows the drop-hammer weighing approximately 1 1/2 tons being operated by the crane to break through the frost in place of compressor and paving breakers. W.C. Kirby's power-shovel is loading the material into trucks. Three new catch basins were constructed on this intersection to replace the old one.

This view shows Hayward street looking northerly from Catherine Street after the binder course of asphalt penetration macadam had been completed and the 2 inch asphalt hot plant mix wearing surface was being constructed. Note the date of this picture, Dec 12, which is probably the latest date at which asphalt pavement construction of this type has ever been attempted in Vermont.

This view is taken from the intersection of Morse Place, looking southerly toward the intersection of Home Ave. The power shovel had cut the banks back and removed large boulders and bushed, but had not completed the job at the time this picture was taken. The center line of the street is approximately the location of the pole line on the left shoulder of the road. A new sewer will have to be constructed on this street before the pavement improvements can be made. Sign to the right reads "Pine Hill Development / Choice building lots / H. C. Petersen, Realtor / 76 Church Street / Phone 643.

This view shows the operation of the power grader in the final shaping of the stabilized material after mixing had been thoroughly completed. Note the compaction under the weight of the rubber tires. In order to eliminate possible scaling or cleavage of materials where compaction takes place under the tires, the entire surface is scarified lightly with a spike-tooth harrow before final rolling.
