        • Description: Sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta. (Chapter house at 215 So. Prospect St., Burlington, Vt. The house was built in 1900 for lawyer Charles T. Barney and later owned by the Catholic diocese as a residence for Bishop Joseph J. Rice.) Kappa Alpha Theta was the first sorority to have a chapter at UVM (1881). A similar photo appears in the 1953 Ariel, the UVM student yearbook, on p.133.

                • Description: Sept. 1, 1929 dated photo. Colchester Ave. north of Chase Street showing the 12% grade between Chase Street and Barrett Street and the approach to the new Winooski Bridge. Textile mills seen in distance. Note the rough condition of the pavement in the foreground as well as the irregular appearance of the curb line. This picture taken just before repaving construction work began. Dwellings numbering in the 400s seen to the left. On the right is No. 6-8 Chase Street, Dan Day Brick Store. Just beyond is 445 Colchester Ave. A similar undated photo with more information on the houses can be found on UVM's Historic Burlington Project web site.

                Burlington Streets: Institute Road

                  • Description: March 22, 1946 Institute Road - Rock Excavation Street Widening Project. This view looking easterly toward North Ave. shows the work after it was practically completed on the south side. Note the large stump in the center background being hauled on a stoneboat by the four-wheel drive Walter truck. Approximately 650 cubic yards of rock excavation was removed from both sides of the street and used for filling and widening the shoulders. This project was requested by the Park Department to improve the safety of the traveling public in getting to and from North Beach. The work was done by the Street Department.

View is South Union looking north from Main Street showing the finished pavement of 2" black base with 2" asphalt top constructed on old telford base done by the Burlington Street Dept. Memorial Auditorium is to the left at the northwest corner of South Union and Main Streets. On the same side of the street just to the north is the College Street Congregational Church.
